So I'm starting to have this sick feeling that Khan's going to win it all
Even though it's supposed to be a longshot still, I had this same feeling when Daut got into the top 30 at CPA and when Rekrul got into the top 16 at the HU event
I just know it's coming
there's no way Khan isn't the favorite right now, if your bookie gives better than 10 to 1 on him taking first you should take that bet |

A large number of contestants have qualified through satellites on pstars and other sites which are no longer taking US customers so the field is down a lot this year. People were expecting <6000 though at one stage so it isn't all bad. |

Yeah, it's a real bummer
Hopefully things will stabilize in this country under the tyrannosaurus dictation of a fundamentalist Christian minority, and we can continue to grow the WSOP again from here
God this country's government is such fucking shit in every way, worst government of any modern western civilization by miles and miles
I hope you don't all crucify me but my dream finish to this tournament would be Scotty Nguyen in first place, and Khan in second. Khan deserves to do well and cash big, but I think it'd be really really good for the poker world if Scotty Nguyen could pull out a first place win. It might even be possible that Khan himself would have more to gain in the long run by letting one of the two superstars take first place if he got heads-up with them
This sport needs superstars, and I think these glamorized TV faces do a lot to get fresh blood into the mix. It's bad for new players to see a completely new face holding the world champion title every year, they want to believe it's a skill game but all they see is these stupid tournaments that have a different winner every year |

Gus Hansen is out and Scotty Nguyen has won it before, he's already been one of the superstars of poker and helped in forming the basis for the 'poker explosion' of the last few years. If anything RainKhan represents what the average player post-boom wants to see, an average joe who has worked his way up to the elite levels at a young age. It give the young people dreams and lets the old folks know there's still time left for them to become a champion. Either way it means more donks at the table which is better for all of us.

I guess I'm looking pretty much like a genius when I took 200:1 odds for him to win (only 2nd to the rain man himself) |

trouble is that winning the tourney IS largely a matter of luck. you only need to run to one bad beat or cooler and youre out. if they changed poker tournament structure to reveal skill more.... but yeah, thats not hapening |

If I were about to make my first big mark in tournament poker I'd be showing my personality very strongly. The players with the big personalities (esfandiari, laak, negreanu, hellmuth, nguyen) are the ones who get interviews/tv time and, in turn, the big sponsorships.
Hevad Khan brand basketballs by 2008 baby. |
Their is a fine line between being charismatic and likeable and looking like a dick showing off. The people you have listed with the exception of Hellmuth are not over the top annoying in most peoples opinions. Laak goes a little crazy sometimes but is for the most part intelligent and subdued. I think the players like Negreanu and Esfandiari are in one category. They get TV shows, game deals etc. I think along with those players you can add people like Raymer and Hachem who get sponsored by PS. Not exactly great entertainers but humble and characters that people go "he's a down to earth guy" about. At the opposite end you have Tony G and Humberto Brenes. A lot of people hate these two players and I think they suffer in sponsors etc because of it. They get a lot of TV time but no one wants to sponsor them to the extent of other name players. Then there is Hellmuth and Matasow in their own category who are annoying but everyone loves them because they are losers trying to make it and showing lots of emotion.
Ive got nothing against rain and I hope he makes the FT. But some of the accounts getting written could mean he is demonised on TV. This could cost him in terms of deals afterwards. Its hard to judge with only written accounts so I hope its not as bad as some of the stuff sounds.
Good luck to him all the same. With 8 mil who cares about sponsors anyway! |
