Is this movie about the back story on how they stole the plans of the Death Star in the very first movie?

Hm trailer doesn't look bad. I only watched the Force Awakens last week, thought it was so-so (some really weak parts, like the villain and the yellow yoda substitute...). Better than anything involving emo-Anakin tho!

This looks better, at a glance.

Not really a liberal conspiracy per say, but definitely lame and annoying.

This whole slew of force-feeding women into traditionally male roles for social-engineering purposes is bad for business, so they'll give up eventually. The movie will ofcourse do great because its Star Wars, but the whole forced-diversity movement will fail because it doesn't feel genuine, because it's not genuine, it reeks of Hollywood Elitism, and people are sick of it.

Actually it is good for business, and thats the reason you see more of that because buisnesses care about one things, its the dollar. And if you know anything about marketing/buisness , and what target markets are, you would understand that the reason women are seen more in movies/games is because you can reach more target markets. Disneys sole purpose is to target all markets.
If you think marketing/advertisment and corporations are genuine or have a goal of being "genuine" , your just another fool among others. Inform yourself before you spew some more facebook opinions

Yah I hear that ghostbusters movie with the female cast is a real winner. Great business decision, corporations are ALWAYS right, they never make mistakes. Oh wait, my point is that they tend to make mistakes like this when they take their eye off of what their constituency wants and tries to tell them WHAT to want. Make sense genius?

Also, when I say genuine, I simply mean that things tend to succeed when people find something about them genuine and connect to them in a real way. Obviously a fiction movie is fictional, thanks for the memo smart guy.

Go eat a Vegan cookie, protest the wage gap, and cast your vote for Justin Trudeau.

But hey, I do have a legitimate question. What is a "facebook opinion"? Is that supposed to be tacitly understood as "stupid"? If so, that's a really lame insult. Do better.

Facebook opinion is what i percive as popular opinions that get passed around virally, because majority of people are incapable of forming their own opinions (ehich requires one to do some reseqrch before they commit to verbal diharee that they defend as "opinions" and "free speach" so they sponge other opinions and reverse logic by trying to find examples to validate these opiniins as being our thought out opinions. (I have/do this, its normal human behaviour, but you can become conscious of this, ans control it to some extend/apply some skepticism)
I reply with logic and actual marketing/buisness practice , you reply with some " oh my aces didnt hold this time, so aces must be the worst hand" type of logic.

Dont worry about genuine, marketers are always working hard to sell you "genuine feeling" products; including movies.

Also didnt realize that ghostbusters isnt even out yet, so LOL, ignore my poker anolagy , i assumed it tanked since you seemed to say that its already not a winner (also because remake of ghost busters is a terrible idea, no matter the cast)
Damn, imma stip here , didnt realize im dealing with Nostradamus.

500k dislikes to 200k likes. Don't exactly need to be Nostrodamus. But yah, maybe I'm just a cynical sexist. Maybe this is all about a financial decision and the movie will do great. Or maybe I'm right and this is just Leftist Hollywood eating itself. And your excuse is that making a remake is just a generally bad idea? Why? That sure is a convenient excuse with no logic behind it.

Everybody should watch the trailer, it's comedy gold.

is this how it's going to be? every 15 years some asshole comes along with an innovative new way to ruin star wars?

women are not so retarded that they need to have actresses playing x many parts that get at least y lines in order to pay attention to the latest shitty blockbuster movie. it's not that it's pandering to part of the audience, it's that it's patronizing to everybody. the force awakens is homage to the point of recycling, fan service to the point of remake. and just for the hell of it since we have a female lead let's make her the biggest jedi prodigy ever by far. can we just stop having fucking jedi prodigies already? at least this new spin-off won't have that. but oh wait there's one problem. it's not "new" at all. except that star wars finally gets what everyone has been asking for, forest whitaker. but seriously, how can you do a spin-off of A New Hope right after remaking A New Hope? oh because you get a chance to show us the death star? ka-ching. it'd be like if peter jacksen cooked up a new lord of the rings movie just to show how grima wormtongue took over rohan and get a shot of the groundskeeper mowing the grass at helm's deep.

the problem with these action movies is making a scared face and breathing hard doesn't count as a character. where are the uma thurmans?

Kinda weird to have female leads in back to back star wars movies. Don't think one of the novels had a true female main character, Mara jade is as close as it came

traxamillion   United States. Apr 09 2016 03:44. Posts 10468

Yea Santa fairy the death star is getting old as fk. Given this coulda been a good original flick had they not just remade a NEW HOPE for star wars 7. Garbage. I know more about star wars than everyone in this thread combined. Read 50+ novels through the vong invasions when it started to fall off. So many good stories there and that last movie was just pure trash in comparison.

That last movie basically erased everything that happened in movies 1-3 and redid the Sams plot with a couple different names. Truly pathetic.

The coolest part of star wars was the resurgence of the Jedi in the years following a new hope. So they jump way in the future and just erase all of that.

I'll say it again. Should have just made movies out of the Thrawn novels. A super star destroyer would be much cooler than another death star or that clone garbage superweapon from the new movie.

So many good superweapons in the books and if they didn't want to do that it takes very little imagination to come up with something better than they did.

I don't know if this holds true for movies, but I heard somewhere (some podcast citing some study) that in general boys (as in kids, not men/women) don't care as much about whether a toy/game they are playing is male/female, but girls do. Presumably because there's already like a million games with male heroes.

Anyway, don't know if that carries over into movies but if it does it would make sense why they want more female protagonists.

Whats this useless discussion ?
Start acting like decent human beings... Might as well do 50 main female actors in a row if they are good. Why do you even have to discuss something so shallow ... Yeah previous movie sucked cause the cast sucked, yes the female actress mainly and the story was a remake. This one is with Felicity Jones, who s a great actress and has an academy nominee in a Female Leading Role, which she might've won if the year in which she was nominated the competition wasn't insane.

How do you not feel disgusted even discussing such " topic " even if its mainstream. The very discussion implies such retarded things

Yea let's just act like men and women are completely the same and gender roles don't exist at all and to even discuss it is misogynistic. Ur the problem.

I have basically no excitement or enthusiasm if the same people who made the latest Stars Wars are going to be doing this one as well (JJ Abrams, right?).

Don't think it really matters much at all if the lead is a female. Mad Max was one of my favorite movies in years and had a female lead role. It just takes a really talented and strong actress to make it work.

I just think I'll wait until the next Tarantino movie comes out to go back to the movies -__-

ok, I'm going to bite

So, what's the problem with a group of people trying to change the traditional gender role of women in movies? (Even if this was a well thought out plan aiming to change said role and not just rich people trying to make movies that appeal to a bigger audience.)

What's terrible about changing a tradition that makes women more uninteresting in movies?
Is there some sort of collateral damage for society or something?

No mad max had a supporting female actress in a prominent role. Tom Hardy was obviously the lead role.

I'm not talking about just movies. There are reasons there are men and women divisions in sports. The sexes are not the same. Females in heavily physical military roles doing battle alongside 200 lb. 6% bodyfat men makes little sense. It is not happening in real life for obvious reasons.

I think you could make an argument that their roles were of equal importance. So maybe Charlize Theron wasn't the lead but was the co-lead along with Tom Hardy.

The Hunger Games is another example (perhaps better than Mad Max) of a great female lead role that resulted in a good movie imo.

do gender asymmetries really have a lot to do with OP movie protagonists in movies that involve force usage? I mean, if we're going to nit pick like this we could qq about every actor being so handsome and ripped but nobody does that.
Ppl do care about strong female leads though and that's because they feel the traditional gender roles are threatened. So my question remains, what's so bad about changing a tradition that expects women to only be damsels in distress or trophy wives? I mean, more options should be a good thing right?

and?

It's awesome and I'm excited about it

People are right that a female lead can be great (Aliens anyone) but it's clear that these roles are chosen for marketing, as has been mentioned in the thread already. I hope she's great but if she's another "super prodigy" who doesn't have to put in any work to suddenly be masterful (like Rey being able to out force a sith with no training) it'll be unenjoyable for me personally, not that anyone cares :D.

There's a good deal of reasons I feel the female lead again is tacky but I couldn't do a good job at explaining why I feel that way, I'll admit to that. I enjoy reading people's opinions though, which is why I left the original comment to start things off.

Also no opinion on the Rome thing lol. That wasn't me, nor do I hate women. I also watched Ep7 in theaters despite saying I wouldn't in the thread here so no need to assume I believe I am a rational human being! Will probably end up watching this movie too.

Alien series, Kill Bill series... it can be done in a way that doesn't feel hamfisted imo, those were awesome movies. Again, why it feels like it matters or if it does matter is up for debate.

Looks pretty lackluster, I'll probably wait for it come out on VHS. Also, fuck feminism. Imo, female leads are okay in moderation (I say okay b/c we don't need any), at least in regards to action roles as men are naturally better suited for it and it feels more genuine to have a man taking the lead. Contrary to popular belief and in my experience women either don't mind male roles or like seeing them. How do men feel about it? Does it even matter? No, because men are "obviously" oppressing women with their natural god-given proclivities, LOL. Feminists are too delusional to really be impartial, generally speaking, anything with a woman rather than a man = right to them. Doesn't matter if it's natural or believable.. it only matters if they can chalk it up as a victory for the already accomplished feminist movement. Fuck em'. Ofc perhaps there are women who CAN do it just as well yadayada but it's tiring to see two female leads in a row in a series that's been very male dominated (as has leading throughout the entire history of humanity!) just because we have cancerous feminists running the movie. Let's be honest guys, the last female lead was shit, scratch that -- the whole movie was shit. Unfortunately unless you're George Lucas you'll never be able to afford smothering yourself in enough alcohol, hookers & blow to let this sit right. The whole thing just reeks of a politically correct feminist agenda, getting it two movies in a row is just another inappropriate trophy. Hopefully this sparks off a good riot or beheading or two, likely not as lightsabers ain't real bros ;( i know.. dem feels.

Rogue One was actually good. Its no where near being classic level like 4-6, but it really wasn't annoying at all like 1-2. There was still a lot of playing to nostalgia but it wasn't as in-your-face as 7. The plot wasn't particularly original, but not to the point of being cowardly like 7. The acting and directing were superb, enough to give it an Empire like feel. My only real complaint would be the CGI characters and the Vader scenes, which were over the top to the point of being cheesy + Show Spoiler +

.

But maybe my *good* review is just a function of it being significantly better than 7, which I felt was *good/OK* at the time as a function of it being significantly better than 1-2 (and maybe 3). After watching 7 a couple more times I started to hate it. So maybe Rogue One is in for a downgrade as well, but since its a standalone at worst its just an irrelevant mediocre film, where episode 7's awfulness is just setting an entire trilogy up for failure.

I saw it last night. It kind of felt like Disney was going for checking all the boxes. I guess I did not find that too annoying. I think I just typically do not like action movies with out some sort of magic to it or something that makes it stand out. Nostalgia was about right with out being cheesy. It was not a bad story. Pretty good in fact. So, overall, just felt a bit too much paint by numbers for me but it was a decent way to pass the time.

How the hell did you guys like this movie?

Acting was awful
Text/dialogue was awful
Story line was so-so
Action was decent

Movie was somewhat entertaining even considering these points,

Anyhow, 6/10 simply because I am generous

we liked it because the last one was so beyond bad.

there were moments that made me cringe in this one and maybe a bit too much comic relief... but the action was insane, the cgi was awesome, and they seemed to focus way more on the actual ships and cool stuff in the starwars galaxy. the way it started out i thought it'd be way too all over the place like the last one but it def. settled down. again the action was awesome and i fully enjoyed it. i also like how they went back to the 80's style computers for the rebel base since they were what was used in there in the original movies. darth vader boarding the ship and turning on his lightsaber in the pitch black was awesome.

one thing that really annoyed me was the hammerhead frigate which was oh so convenient for exactly what they had to do. i guess now researching it its actually a ship that was used previously, but meh.. lol it looked cool af tho

Go eat a Vegan cookie, protest the wage gap, and cast your vote for Justin Trudeau.

You talk about hoW others are giving out poor insults. lol. vegan cookies are better for your health so you'll live longer if you eat them instead of regular ones. wage gaps are ruining the world making more people poor and a few individuals richer, creating greater injustices in the world so why wouldnt you protest them? and justin trudeau seems like a cool dude and appears to be doing a good job. you are the one who sucks at insulting.
