Facebook opinion is what i percive as popular opinions that get passed around virally, because majority of people are incapable of forming their own opinions (ehich requires one to do some reseqrch before they commit to verbal diharee that they defend as "opinions" and "free speach" so they sponge other opinions and reverse logic by trying to find examples to validate these opiniins as being our thought out opinions. (I have/do this, its normal human behaviour, but you can become conscious of this, ans control it to some extend/apply some skepticism)
I reply with logic and actual marketing/buisness practice , you reply with some " oh my aces didnt hold this time, so aces must be the worst hand" type of logic.

Dont worry about genuine, marketers are always working hard to sell you "genuine feeling" products; including movies.

women are not so retarded that they need to have actresses playing x many parts that get at least y lines in order to pay attention to the latest shitty blockbuster movie. it's not that it's pandering to part of the audience, it's that it's patronizing to everybody. the force awakens is homage to the point of recycling, fan service to the point of remake. and just for the hell of it since we have a female lead let's make her the biggest jedi prodigy ever by far. can we just stop having fucking jedi prodigies already? at least this new spin-off won't have that. but oh wait there's one problem. it's not "new" at all. except that star wars finally gets what everyone has been asking for, forest whitaker. but seriously, how can you do a spin-off of A New Hope right after remaking A New Hope? oh because you get a chance to show us the death star? ka-ching. it'd be like if peter jacksen cooked up a new lord of the rings movie just to show how grima wormtongue took over rohan and get a shot of the groundskeeper mowing the grass at helm's deep.

Kinda weird to have female leads in back to back star wars movies. Don't think one of the novels had a true female main character, Mara jade is as close as it came

Yea Santa fairy the death star is getting old as fk. Given this coulda been a good original flick had they not just remade a NEW HOPE for star wars 7. Garbage. I know more about star wars than everyone in this thread combined. Read 50+ novels through the vong invasions when it started to fall off. So many good stories there and that last movie was just pure trash in comparison.

That last movie basically erased everything that happened in movies 1-3 and redid the Sams plot with a couple different names. Truly pathetic.

The coolest part of star wars was the resurgence of the Jedi in the years following a new hope. So they jump way in the future and just erase all of that.

I'll say it again. Should have just made movies out of the Thrawn novels. A super star destroyer would be much cooler than another death star or that clone garbage superweapon from the new movie.

So many good superweapons in the books and if they didn't want to do that it takes very little imagination to come up with something better than they did.

And if you don't think Disney is alienating its core fan base to bring in more teenage girl fans you are just fucking wrong.

I don't know if this holds true for movies, but I heard somewhere (some podcast citing some study) that in general boys (as in kids, not men/women) don't care as much about whether a toy/game they are playing is male/female, but girls do. Presumably because there's already like a million games with male heroes.

Anyway, don't know if that carries over into movies but if it does it would make sense why they want more female protagonists.

Yeah previous movie sucked cause the cast sucked, yes the female actress mainly and the story was a remake. This one is with Felicity Jones, who s a great actress and has an academy nominee in a Female Leading Role, which she might've won if the year in which she was nominated the competition wasn't insane.

So, what's the problem with a group of people trying to change the traditional gender role of women in movies? (Even if this was a well thought out plan aiming to change said role and not just rich people trying to make movies that appeal to a bigger audience.)

What's terrible about changing a tradition that makes women more uninteresting in movies?

No mad max had a supporting female actress in a prominent role. Tom Hardy was obviously the lead role.

I'm not talking about just movies. There are reasons there are men and women divisions in sports. The sexes are not the same. Females in heavily physical military roles doing battle alongside 200 lb. 6% bodyfat men makes little sense. It is not happening in real life for obvious reasons.

I think you could make an argument that their roles were of equal importance. So maybe Charlize Theron wasn't the lead but was the co-lead along with Tom Hardy.

The Hunger Games is another example (perhaps better than Mad Max) of a great female lead role that resulted in a good movie imo.

People are right that a female lead can be great (Aliens anyone) but it's clear that these roles are chosen for marketing, as has been mentioned in the thread already. I hope she's great but if she's another "super prodigy" who doesn't have to put in any work to suddenly be masterful (like Rey being able to out force a sith with no training) it'll be unenjoyable for me personally, not that anyone cares :D.

There's a good deal of reasons I feel the female lead again is tacky but I couldn't do a good job at explaining why I feel that way, I'll admit to that. I enjoy reading people's opinions though, which is why I left the original comment to start things off.

Also no opinion on the Rome thing lol. That wasn't me, nor do I hate women. I also watched Ep7 in theaters despite saying I wouldn't in the thread here so no need to assume I believe I am a rational human being! Will probably end up watching this movie too.

Alien series, Kill Bill series... it can be done in a way that doesn't feel hamfisted imo, those were awesome movies. Again, why it feels like it matters or if it does matter is up for debate.
