yeah I def agree with the 70$ per hour part doing something I like instead of 140 doing something I don't, I stick with poker for now cuz I haven't really figured out exactly anything else I'd like to do and I'm still enjoying it but I would definitely not mind doing something I like more for less money as long as my family doesn't starve

Im not sure what to do tomorrow when I see her, should I shake her hand?? -Floofy

After black friday(lost 20k), I grinded live for about 1.5 years. TLDR: won like 40k+ in a month then lost it all over a course of a year.

Then I luckily landed a job(thank god I didn't drop out of college) in the online gambling industry when NJ legalized online poker. After a year, Party Poker gave me an offer and now work there as a manager. As a casino license holder, I'm not allowed to gamble in NJ, so I haven't played poker in months. Going to play WSOP next year though so can't wait for that.

I was very bad in balancing poker and my private life. Could only focus on one or the other, so either poker or private life suffered. Did not like that and although I made okay money from poker as a student at the time, I never thought about dropping out. Already landed a job before finishing uni, met my (now) ex-gf at the time... so life begun and I went with it. That was 6 years ago. I now work as Business Analyst, I make decent buck.. bought a house, 2 cars and I dont really have to check my balance to buy stuff, Im happy, but still get jealous watching EPT Super High Rollers.

Do you guys think that the day the US market will be able to play on Stars the level of competition will somewhat lower itself ( more gamblers )?

Also, if today a good player makes 4-5 BB/100, what did you guys make back then?

Before Black Friday happened, I was already in a dark place mentally. So when it did happen, it was devastating to me. I didn't know what to do with myself. I quit playing for awhile and tried to go back to a community college in Knoxville, TN and work on getting my degree but was just miserable every day.

I finished a semester or two before stopping again and getting back into poker. I started playing a lot more live and very slowly my mental state and confidence came back.

Now I live in a 1BR apartment in Nashville and grind good live games pretty hard 2-3x a week and play on some US sites. Also went to like 6-7 live tournament stops this year.

I still make good money playing (around $85/hour for this year) and still really enjoy the game so I will just continue to do this for the foreseeable future. My general plan/goal is just to build up enough liquid to purchase my own place and possibly branch out into other business type ventures while still mainly playing poker. I still have thoughts about trying to finish up getting my degree but the more I think about it, it just doesn't seem worth it atm for my overall happiness and state of mind.

online bob is actually a pretty smart person, not at all like the creepy fucker that sits in the sofa telling me he does nasty shit to me when im asleep - pinballLast edit: 29/12/2014 17:48

I decided to make the switch just before black friday, i just didnt see any future for myself, or a decent exit strategy. I was lucky to be around people like doomer, and mez, and see what real success in the game could get you, but still how unsure your future could be in 10 years.

After i gave it a few years of my life, i figured if i didnt make it by then, i probably never would.
So i went into software and immediately realized that poker was crazy hard compared to other ways of making money. Now i just goof off at work most of the week, get to have an amazing office and a great role at a company, and get over 6 figures a year. The only boring thing about it is knowing this is probably what i will be doing for the rest of my life. One fun part of poker for me was knowing it wasnt going to last forever. Kind of like an old fashion gold rush.

Its hard to make a easy buck legally, its impossible to make a easy buck morally.

So I guess I quit because I couldn't win anymore from inside the US and didn't think it'd be worth the hassle of international travel because poker will inevitably be unwinnable and kill me mentally.

do you have a Bachelors degree or did you find this didnt matter once you learned programming?

my path has been nearly identical to TimDawg's except i held an Irl job for a while after black friday administering meds at an old folks home and i'm playing now online and live in the Bay Area, northern California. Oh and my hourly is not quite $85 haha i wish. That might be doable on Bovada but even the 510 live here on a good day that will be tough. California rake is weird its basically a 6 dollar drop anytime a flop is seen regardless of stakes (rake+bbj) so 3/5 and especially 1/2 i feel winrates are lower than elsewhere. 10/20 is a time game but doesn't run much. Games are active though. Any other LPers play up here? Bay 101, Matrix, Lucky Chances, Oaks?

I've been considering going to College and working towards a degree (possibly in Computer Sciences). I don't know what else to do. I can't wake up every day and play poker anymore, it doesn't satisfy me like it use to, I always have to force myself just to play.

The thought of spending 4-5 years in school for a degree, then 1-2 years at an entry level job, just to later acquire 9-5 career, depresses me. I hope I don't find the experience to be as miserable as some of you do.

I plan on playing poker during the winter to give it one last shot, I want to see if I can reignite my love for the game. While I'm at it, i'll also learn Python, along with taking some online courses of grade 12 math, calculus.

There's a free Python course currently running https://www.edx.org/course/introducti...r-science-mitx-6-00-1x-0#.VK-NxyvF_4k if any of you are interested.

Smuft I'm just getting back to online poker. Seems like a tough time to just be getting started. Can you name off any of the old SC players who are still doing well in online poker. Are any of them coaches? What areas should I concentrate on right now. I feel like putting the work in at 50NL 6 max might be a good start. What are the most profitable types of poker on Carbon/ACR. Also I play live 2/3NL but the game is so different than online that my ranges differ a lot. Should I focus on one?

Elky

edit: didn't catch the online part.. Elky is doing well in poker in terms of having his stars sponsorship and playing all the big live events. Not so much online I guess.

This thread is depressing to read, I stopped playing for a long time and wanted to get back, I would be happy to be a winner at low stakes like NL100, did the games really get that hard or just at higher stakes?

As Smuft wrote in OP there are big winners in every field, but the game got way harder than before
