Hi LP. I'm about to start writing my thesis and I obviously want it to be on the subject of poker. However, it needs to be something business related. It may be an analysis of the online poker (or gambling) industry or something along these lines, but I have no idea how to specify the topic. That's why I come here to ask for your suggestions. By the way, my major is management. Thanks in advance for any help!

Mike

UPDATE: Please help me by filling out this very short survey about your preferences in choosing an online poker room.I'd really appreciate it if you also shared this link with your poker friends. Thanks!

Stars' semi monopoly and how the competitors are responding to it. How broad can your topic be?

GoldRush   United States. Feb 27 2014 14:40. Posts 1025

u came to the right place, but its very broad, theres many areas of poker that you can be writing on. id focus on skill and how interstate poker can work in usa with ease.

Gawuss   Poland. Feb 27 2014 14:50. Posts 2336

I can't write about skill and the game itself. It has to be business related.

@Seo

I guess that is a kind of topic I'd need. I'm not sure how broad it can be though, it has to be broad enough so that I can write 20+ pages about it.

the history of online poker and why juggernauts like partypoker (lastgest pokerroom in the world pre black us legislation) who made 100% of the wrong moves are nearly extinct in addition to the poker model itself, the insertion of things like zoom (more hands/house (rake/hoour) lower winrates etc..)

Live poker vs online poker, everyone I talk to in RL seems to think online poker is rigged and that they can go to a live game and read people

Nobody cares about poker or the companies that run them. It's profitable because people give them money. Instead write about what it takes to be a winning player, the poker mindset, how someone might file their occupation as an "equity analyst" on their tax return or something lol, and what that really means. Make it sound legit, since everyone's first reaction is going to be "gambling". Prove that it's not gambling.

bye now

That would be a thesis in statistics, probability and psychology.
The resources and research needed is way above the resources available for an undergraduate thesis.

Focusing on Black Friday and how companies tackled it would inevitably lead to a large legal section. Unless you have a dual degree and focused on law a lot I would be against that.

Focusing on a single company is really easy - pick one, pick your scope and focus then find what's available, contact people within the company with questions for research etc.
Stars will be by far the easiest as they are approachable, you pick your scope like their marketing, takeover of FTP, their business model and position on the market etc.
If you try to find out stuff about e.g. Playtech (ipoker) you will struggle - when I worked in sales even trying to find out who is the management where they stay and how to contact them was a total nightmare and when you did they were total dicks.

I did my thesis on the motives and effects of Mergers and Acquisitions in the UK Energy market 2007-11 (snore) but at least its a semi-common topic and was somewhat easy to research and construct statistical models of. If you're looking for pretty good grades I would recommend starting hard and early and doing a topic that is easy to find a lot of information about.

If you are working on something like Pokerstars as a company you have to focus on it in such a way that I don't think the fact that it's about a poker company will really make your thesis much more interesting for you to be doing yourself.

Really cool but have to make sure you stay on topic constantly, really tough literature review as I'm sure there is not many academics that will have wrote about this topic before.

Suggestions

How can Pokerstars maintain its dominance of online poker? & Talk something about organisational structure
How can so many different poker sites co-exist (in the face of Pokerstars?)
How did Pokerstars set up its organisation to compete with existing poker sites? (going back some time here, and I guess some decent percentage is due to UIGEA screwing over Party Poker)
Can Full Tilt Poker regain its reputation from Black Friday?

How long is your thesis ? (Word Count)

I have no idea about the word count. It has to be 20-30 pages long (survey, bibliography included).

Ok so I've finally chosen the topic and I'll be writing about the development of the online poker industry including the effects that Black Friday had on it

Why do people always ask for suggestions on what to write about when it comes to poker and then always end up writing about the exact same thing "moneymaker + black friday"

Man I agree. The scope is large, if it wasn't it's gonan be legal stuff that's boring for us. We had documentaries on thar shiz
I say make it focused, do e.g. marketing startegy of Pokerstars and it's gonna be so much fun to read.
- social media
- hiring pros (demographic (Baal?), women, live pros online pros
- adverts
- events
- forums and communities (pokerstars Steve)
- stunts (world record, 8 mil Sunday, SCOOP WCOOP ...)
- SNE
etc. etc.

Hi everyone. I've already started with my thesis, but now I need your help with filling out this very short survey about your preferences in choosing an online poker room. I'd really appreciate if you also shared this link with your poker friends so that there's as many answers as possible. Thanks!
