very well done

in that 3 years breakeven stretch, how did u keep yourself together mentally and keep on playing?

It's all kind of a blur now, but family distracts from losing so that helps. It's clear to me now that the better you run at the early part of your poker career, the tougher it is to acquire/hone real poker skill; and through adversity I became a lot better at this game. I also became much more frugal in life because I noticed that even though I didn't lose, just broke even for a while, most of my bankroll disappeared due to poor spending habits.

So now I developed some simple habits that force me to stay rooted and also don't allow me to overspend. The easiest habit to implement had a few positive effects. Firstly, it kept me from jumping up stakes too often. It also kept me from overspending. The idea was to start paying myself out of my BR every two weeks a predetermined amount to cover my bills and allow for monthly investment while the rest stays in the roll. This way, through a downswing, I would have to move down stakes as I knew my "paycheck" was coming up to take a chunk out of my roll. It also keeps me from being "consumerish" and firing a bunch of money on something expensive as only enough is hitting my bank each month that I'd have to liquidate some kind of investment to pay for anything I wanted; having to actually sell something that is making you money is tough to do for impulse-buys, at least for me, so it felt like a good backstop.

As far as the story in between me beginning my downswing and learning to have more discipline: I got backing for MTT's for a while so that took some mental pressure off of me. I'm still partially backed for them as my backer buys 10-30% of MTTs I play and I put up the rest until my makeup's cleared. During 2011 I had backing for live cash and managed a staking team for extra income but that all fell apart in early 2012 when the person I was managing the money for decided he didn't want to do it anymore. Was a shame too because we had been using our profits to acquire players and I think we were about to start cranking out a lot of money, but you can't tell a man what to do with his own money. At the time that fell apart I decided the time had come to go all-in and use my case poker money (5k) to play 5/10NL and dip into my retirement fund if I needed to for more (seems dumb now as I could have tried grinding up from 2/5, but I hadn't let my pride go at this point yet I think). Luckily I ran well from the start and didn't have to dip into that fund which would've had tax implications. And that's where we stand today. Didn't think I'd be typing that long of a story when I started this reply, but my hands just kept going. Feels good to type it all out sometimes.
