today some bags of spicy pork rinds caught my eye. i checked the back of one of the bags to look at the nutrition info and it said 10g protein per serving, 6 servings per bag. so i'm like "health food, easy game" and buy like 6 bags.
when i get home however i realize right next to the protein listing there's some smaller text that says "not a significant source of protein". wtf does this mean, it has protein but it doesn't? anyone who is knowledgeable about nutrition and such tell me what sort of tomfoolery is going on here?

Its confusing, yeah. I thought pork rinds were mostly fat? If you are bulking up and need a protien snack, need to have accurate info on the packages. Obv delicous though:

As you can see, or maybe you cant, the "rind" is the skin of a pig + some additional fat, that is fried.
Notice in the video, he has small brown squares that look and sound like tile you use on a floor. That's just dried pig skin.
Eating a lot of animal skin isn't good, which is why some people decide to have skinless chicken.
As for me, if I'm going to eat the chicken, I'll eat the skin too. I'll pass on the pork rinds though, mostly cuz I watch what I eat and don't consume much junk food at all.

Off the top of my head, people eat meat because it's tasty and has a lot of protein, and protein is something you need.
Although, you can get protein from non-meat sources, which is another story.

i'm aware there are non-meat sources of protein -_-

I don't know what they mean by a serving but if it's 100gr there are better options:
100 gr chicken gives 25 gr proteïn
100 gr steak gives 30 gr proteïn
Whey proteïn in a smoothy.
Maybe that's why.

serving size is 15grams, anyway that can't be the reason, there's all kinds of stuff with less protein that doesn't have a disclaimer saying it's not a significant source of protein.

Not all Protein is good Protein, pork one of the worst I think, and usually I stay away from it, the amount is way to small as well. I am a light guy, 61kg, and I should eat around 20 - 25grams of protein for every meal, if I were to eat 10g, I'd be way to little.
And that's if you eat 6 meals a day, if you eat less meals you should have more Protein, if you're a bigger guy, heavier, even more Protein. Maybe the pack is saying "this is a full meal, but it only has 1/3 the protein you need lololol". Or something
Also matters what animal it's from, and how it's fed. If you imagine an aids filled, Nigerian prostitute, if you were to eat her meat, It'd be pretty shit. But if you were to eat a beautiful, happy girl, perfect clear skin, loves to drink water, eating healthy n shit, and still a viring, oh, and she also loves to train. That protein would be A LOT better for yah.
Ok, hope that helped a little lol

lol thanks marius i don't think that's the reason though. there's stuff like brownie mix that is clearly an insignificant source of protein (like 1g/serving) but there's no disclaimer saying so. whereas if this bag's nutritional info was accurate it clearly would be a significant source, yet there's a disclaimer saying it's not which is confusing to me because while i'm aware different types of protein (whey, casein, soy) have slightly different benefits, i've always been under the impression that from a body composition standpoint all protein was pretty much the same.

lol "healthy food" ... have you read how much fat it has per serving
I can just imagine... generaly pig meat is very fat heavy, and skin is full of cholesterol

My guess would be that the protein in that stuff is mostly in collagen form seeing as its skin from a pig or something? The body has a hard time breaking down collagen and using it as a protein source so even though it contains 10g proteins your body wont break it down and use it
Have you tried contacting the manufacturer? They usually have a number on the package where you can ask such questions (at least in Holland).
Men's Health is quite positive about it (fwiw):
Pork Rinds
Why you think they're bad: These puffy snacks are literally cut from pigskin. Then they're deep-fried.
Why they're not: A 1-ounce serving contains zero carbohydrates, 17 grams (g) of protein, and 9 g fat. That's nine times the protein and less fat than you'll find in a serving of carb-packed potato chips. Even better, 43 percent of a pork rind's fat is unsaturated, and most of that is oleic acid—the same healthy fat found in olive oil. Another 13 percent of its fat content is stearic acid, a type of saturated fat that's considered harmless, because it doesn't raise cholesterol levels.
Eat this: J&J Critters Microwave Pork Rinds ($6.50 for a 10-ounce container; www.microwaveporkrinds.com). Because the rinds are cooked and puffed in a microwave instead of deep-fried, each serving contains only 4 g fat—meaning they're lower in calories and less greasy than regular pork rinds
I don't know if men's health is paid for those pieces though.

makes sense, thanks. if i eat LOTS of pork rinds everyday will my body become more efficient at breaking down collagen and using it as a protein source?

thanks mens health, i know now that pork rind is much healthier than potato chips lol. next potato chips will be fantastic for you bc unlike eating cyanide on toast, you won't die from eating potato chips.
meh srsly tho pork rind is fine once in a while unless you have it all the time and try to make it a regular protein source

interesting article in men's health, but all things being equal i would bet on saki being right and men's health being FOS (or at least misleading) ;o i mean the pork rind company must have been required to put the disclaimer because the 10g protein was deceiving in some way

Pork rinds are the best snack. It sucks when they go stale, so you have to eat like the whole bag in one sitting. From a health and fitness standpoint, there is a lot of fat in there and it will slow you down a lot. Post workout? who cares eat that shit. When I took exercising seriously, I would eat that shit once a week or two weeks.
pre workout - grapes, no orange juice shit slows you down
post workout - protein, ok oj
Anyone know if soy protein is any good? I used to eat Cliff protein bars all the time, and all are made from soy. But I heard that soy makes your estrogen levels go up. Also soy is probably GMO too.
Protein and fats are good to you, dunno why people still believe pork is bad. Stay away from sugar and maple syrup and you will start losing weight pretty fast.
Avoid soy protein its shit. Soy has an active component (cant remember name) that stops your body from digesting protein by destroying your stomach peptides. So u end up paying for expensive dumps

Sup gotunk. If I recall correctly pork and chicken have the least amount of protein when compared to other meats, plus pork is fatty.

I'm eating Tuna while reading this, and that makes me feel pretty awesome.
I can't eat sugar, so gaining weight is nearly impossible.
Last week I tried putting 8 eggs in the mixer, cook up3dl of pasta, filled the pan with chicken, then removed that, and filled it with mushrooms, then mixed it all in a big bowl, and i ate till I almost puked, and each time I felt there was room for more, I kept stuffing throughout the rest of the day.
I've also tried eating x3 as much calories which is recommended daily for a month, that didn't work either.
I train weights 4 times a week, I don't gain any weight, "It simply doesn't move" LOL, ok bad one I guess hehe.
Let's see if anyone here got some suggestions. I'll try anything that won't kill me, Sugar, half the molecyle or how you spell it makes me very sick. GOGOGO (so no fructose, or varitions of sugar, there are at least 40 types or so, like all the tol, mannitol, xyltol, sorbitol, so forth, all that shit is a no go).
HEHE
Ps, now I have to take some drug test, an older guy reported me for steroids, which is AWESOME. Since I don't gain muscles, they just seem to get stronger and stronger, so got chopsticks, but I don't care, I lift the shit out of those weights. (Some guy thinking he was strong was all nice and helpful when I lifted, and he thought I was doing my max rep, and he had jsut taken record, bragged to some mates, and he was giving me pointers, but I was just doing warmups, HEHE, PWNED lol).
Oj, that was a lot of text, sry <3

I really don't know much about bulking up but, if you take in more calories than you use....
I'm assuming you're doing 5 sets and 5 reps?
Some pointers I picked up along the way, don't drink acidic juices like OJ or grapefruit juice before workouts.
Eat berries before workouts, and no meat (meat slows you down and makes you lethargic).
After workouts pack in around 25g+ of protein.
I'm pretty happy with my workout regimen. Shows great results and I can hit the heavybag non-stop for 6-3 minute rounds with 30 second breaks in between.
I follow a 4 set 15-40 rep workout for muscle endurance. RIP'd. But I also run 5 miles MWF before my workouts.

Hey Thanks, I train Deadlift, free weights, heavy shit first, and after my warmup I go as heavy as I can, and few reps, the last half of the workout I do more reps, to get burn and make sure I have nothing more to give.
I can't drink acid juices since I'm allergic to half the sugar molecyle, so no fructose, that's a no no, so no fruit juices or anything like that. I get sick pain just from eating blueberries, so no berries plx, in small dozes I can take Strawberries so I do that yay.
I have some white powder I got told by a nutrition doctor which is "energy powder" with mostly carbohydrates, I mix it in water, I take that right before I work out, and i sip it during my work outs, just to try and be awesome. I also stuff on protein's after I worked out, usually it's chicken.

Hey Thanks!
Not sure what's up with that sugar either, I got it explained a few times from my doctor's, but I didn't get it.
But yes, I can drink milk, that month I tried to stuff as much calories as possible, I was chugging fat milk, and cream like milk nonstop, but didn't seem to work.
A lot of people have told me, said, and linked me to articles on "bad" things that happens with milk, so last 2 months I've tried to cut it out of my diet, just for fun, and see what happens.
