Doug "WCGRider" Polk going against No Limit Bot for $100,000

This is a question being asked over and over again with computers becoming more powerful each day: can a computer bot beat a poker player? We already know that even the best human players can't compete against artificial intelligence in the game of chess, but what about more complex game of poker?

The challenge already started in Pittsburgh at 11am local time on Friday and will be running every day for eight hours until May 7th. The human team is being represented by online professional Doug ‘WCGRider’ Polk and his three colleagues. They will be going against ‘Claudico’, a computer program designed by a team at Carnegie Mellon University.

The results should be really interesting, as the game is heads up No Limit Hold’em challenge.
Last time scientists claimed another poker bot, ‘Cepheus’, could play perfect Limit Hold’em and beat or go even against any opponent over long periods of time. No Limit Hold'em is way more complex though.

There is also $100,000 on the lane, as Rivers Casino along with Microsoft put up that kind of price for a player that wins over the course of 80,000 hands against Claudico.

“It’s pretty cool to be at the cutting edge of technology like this”, said Polk. “I hope we can stand up for humanity and take this computer down. I know computers will eventually be able to beat humans, but I hope we can make them go a few more rounds after this before they do.”

Creator of Claudico, Tuomas Sandholm, commented: “The No Limit game is so complicated it opens up more possible situations than there are atoms in the universe. We are using these algorithms for poker, but they are really developed for use in any game of incomplete information in general, from cyber security, to negotiations, to medicine.”

That's a cool line. Time to study how this works

I hope they post EV graph

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us and as we let our own lights shine we unconsciously give other people permision to do the same

I guess he'll play it when he can't get action and replace some of his study time with playing the bot - should be beneficial to him if the bot's really good.

The added EV is in the Exposure he gets - I'm sure it has some value to become known to the general public too? It certainly will if he decides to monetize it through streaming/sponsorships/even job after poker when Microsoft's involved.

Freeroll for 1$/Hand is worth anyone's time. Plus non monetary factors

I have been watching donger and Polk min lead a ton on flops oop; from single raised pots to 4bet pots. I'm assuming they are trying to exploit the bot and this is not actually what they consider optimal strategy.

They do experiment on exploiting the bot. Doug c, c, c/r a river bet of 469 to 20,000k all in after slow playing a nut straight on a 10KX, A, X and bot calls with one pair A3. Doubt if that call can be GTO.

They bot does play well though and was clearly giving donger problems

Just seen a little bit, i think it was a few days ago, funny situation. He'd been playing a bit, and the security guard had been watching a bit.

Then he said, something along the lines of "I've been watching u a bit, many of the lines you use, i do the same thing, but it's not working out that well for me. You think you could go over my game when you're done here?"

Doug said yeah, sure

It's kinda sad they already know they're playing a bot. I'm more curious if they could "spot" a bot if they were to play on a poker software. Not controlled by a third party but actually made by the software itself.

Shin-il : Yeah it was very very very good for me too. Rekrul : YOU MOTHER FUCKING FUCKING SON OF A BITCH

I think that a bot sophisticated enough to hang w/ the highest stakes HU players would also be sophisticated enough to avoid detection (at least by it's opponents and possibly also by the client security).

Just off the top of my head

Timing randomization
Line randomization
Occasionally make human errors (timeout, misclick, etc)

can't imagine what someone who dedicates their lives to programming bots could think of to avoid detection

That's what concerns me. A bot made by the software itself doesn't need detection ? They're simply made in order to make us think their software is full of legit players. Thus making more rake til the last one. I really don't see any cons about it.

It's making online poker players more paranoid than they already are...

The key is headsup, the amount of variables in a ring game are so much more for a bot to handle, for us is no problem but how computer works its really difficult
