OK, only my last live poker trip, I was playing with this terrible spewtard who was literally raising any 2 cards and loved showing down bluffs and such stuff like that. He obviously wasn't playing to win, and was one of many soft spots at the 1/2 table. Anyway, after playing for a few hours with the guy, we have an interesting situation come up.
UTG raises to $10 and there's 2 calls, so I call behind on the button with 77. Spewtard squeezes to $50 and it folds to me. While I'm "thinking", he flips over AKo. I lol and all in. Is this considered unethical? I'm sure I could get a better spot vs this guy and all, but I wanted to take this spot. I felt pretty bad, and felt it was kind of underhanded, but it was his mistake, and felt like it was a spot where he might fold, and either way I'm technically +EV shoving 77 vs him. Thoughts?

Oops, I forgot to mention I felt pretty dirty about it, but if a similar situation somehow happened online, I'd definitely shove in the chips without thinking twice. I guess I just feel bad because I know the guy is just trying to have a good time, and I cheap shotted him.

Did he flip it over accidentally?

If not it's his problem, you shouldnt feel bad. Live players are just plain retarted. You shouldnt fold your hand just because he thinks it's funny or cool to flip over AK.

If you are confortable paying for his mistake fold... otherwise push imo. I would push and feel ok about this and Im usually pretty rigid about suff like that.

Trust me, I am a poker player.

Well ...
If he shows you his AK he probably want you to call and make a flip ...

The worst thing here is the impression you left on the other players with this move.In live poker you will make most of your profit from people who know they gonna lose, but come to have fun and enjoy the game. There's no problem doing what you have done if you never ever come back to this place, but if you plan to get regular there you should think more about your image among other players, even if it costs you money sometimes. When you play those kind of players you should look/act like money doesn't even matter, and at the same time, extracting the maximum value from everyone without having this image broken.

I totally agree. I was just on a poker trip 3000 miles from my hometown fwiw. I actually think about it exactly the same way as what you described even though I'm a cash game fish. Another time I was playing with this particular spewtard, he was blind raising to $10 UTG in our 1/2 game, so I blind min raised it to $18 to make things fun a few times. I think this is kind of why I felt bad about doing this to him after he already lost like 500 bucks and we were mostly just having fun. I kind of just wanted to gambol also lol.

The object of the game is to take other peoples money. I would shove every time. But I play poker to make money. Having fun is a perk that comes with doing good IMO. If you had aces or kings there you wouldn't think about folding, so why think about it when it's a flip.

If she touches you 60% of the time, and is aggressive with her tits, you have it get it in before she crushes your nuts on the turn

Wait a minute. I think you chose the *most ethical reasonable course of action available*. While shoving is marginally +EV and high variance, the highest EV and lowest variance play would be to call and take off a flop; the play proceeds as normal but you have knowlege of his hand. You are normally completely justified and within the rules to do so, but you can see how that could be seen as angle shooting, and you may decide to try not to upset the fish. I think this is clearly the action you should take if you are on a short roll, though. The only other possible action, folding, is absurd. There is no reason you should punish yourself for his inattention.

I think it's silly to think anyone would have a negative view of you for making this move, as you are passing up the opportunity to just call and play perfectly after the flop. If you want to be extra nice, just shove and show your hand so he can decide whether to flip. I think this is a pretty good course of action.

Oh, I guess you can also just call and show and offer to check it down, or call and make the offer without showing. I hate both of those options. People in general don't understand the ethics of this very well, and may not be alert to how softplaying affects them even in cash games, not just in tournaments, but I don't think a person's level of understanding of the ethics of your behavior has any effect on your responsibility to act ethically towards them. So as much as you want to be nice to the fish, I think these two options are poor.
