Anyone know any good sites that recommend certain brands/type of components over others? Also can anyone calculate a rough total cost for an excellent gaming comp with the latest quad processor/ w optimum video card, plenty of RAM, and fast CD/DVD drive that can burn and lightscribe? (also the other parts like, fan, casing, motherboard, powersupply, etc.)

Or can someone tell me straight it if it is actually cost effective to buy seperate parts and put them together instead of buying a comp from a company like Hp online?

Find used parts, so much cheaper.

I just got a XPS 9000 from Dell for roughly 1500$ including a ATI 5870 HD and I gotta say I'm very satisfied.

jason has a computer that can play starcraft 2 on ultra settings with no lag for about 700. thats without an operating system, monitor, mouse or keyboard.

here's his setup and a post explaining it. he built it two years ago however:

it will always be cheaper to buy parts seperately then to get a premade from a company like dell/hp.

Avoid buying premade computers. There is typically always one aspect of the computer that is always weak to get the cost down, thus the deal looks better. It is pretty easy to build a computer as well if you have basic computer knowledge.

If you wanna send me a pm or MSN(PM me for it) me and tell me your expectations, the amount you can spend, etc, I can help you out.

I love doing these types of things for some reason, especially for LPers

P.S. oh, and ALWAYS buy from newegg. Very rarely will you find a better value anywhere else on computer parts

newegg is king

if you're unable to build your own ibuypower is very competitive

i do not recommend alienware, dell, or hp

go to tomshardware.com forums and there's a category exactly for this. there's also the absolute nut guide on how to build computers stickied, which is surely what you want to do because there's nothing funner than getting all the pretty boxes for your new computer and then putting it together :D it's much better than what you'll get for the same price from alienware or whatever too.
