I think instead of a pointless job to keep your life ticking you should volunteer for a charity (this is what I do). Not only will that ameliorate your parents' views about you playing poker, it may make yourself feel more useful to society. It's also really really interesting, and because you are a volunteer no-one treats you like their bitch or anything like a boss would. Good luck.

I will definitely spend time with charities, volunteering, donating etc. I think the charity to part time job ratio will become highly dependent on how much money and how reliable poker is. The better poker is going for me the more I will spend time volunteering. Good plan about telling this to parents, it actually may help a bit. Thanks.

true and this is my attitude and pretty much my moms. Her view is "as long as you are making a living for yourself and are happy there is nothing else I want" I would just like to not be disowned by 3/4 of my family (everyone in my moms family except my mom plus my entire dads family.

You're dad and his family sound like jerks. Disown them before they disown you would be the most agressive line, although may turn out to be -ev in the long run...

But seriously that sucks. Just explain that it's what you want to do and you can always go back to school if you change your mind. If they have a problem with it, it's their problem not yours .

You can still pull 100k years playing 2/4 & 3/6 with a full time job. I don't understand why you completed a degree you have no intention of pursuing as a career. If you have some interest in the field you've studied you should at least try it out for a couple of years and get some experience. Engaging in a menial job such as secretarial work or any other non-professional or non-trade occupation will be a waste of time.

I have zero interest in the field I majored in. I only majored in it because by the time I hated it completely it was to late to switch to a new major without having to take an extra year to finish. Also I am just getting the degree as a backup plan in case poker doesn't work out for me.

You realise every man and his dog has a degree. Having a degree is not a backup plan. If you have no experience you will not get an interview 2 years out of uni.

Also part of the reason why I would have part time jobs places would be to have experience places, could get part time job at an engineering firm if I find there to be a need. Realistically though i won't get a job with the degree, I will just go to grad school and get a PhD in biology if poker doesn't work out.

eh how about doing a study in which you are actually interested in

finish the bachelor

start another bachelor

play poker, study something you find interesting --> win @ life

working part time as a receptionist or in a field you are not interested in sounds stupid

doing grad school in something I find interesting will almost certainly occur if I become to bored w/ poker to do it for a living or just life fail at poker and need to do something else for a living. I will probably read up on things i'm interested in all the time, but going to school and trying to play poker at the same time would be to draining to do either very effectively.

hm in the netherlands tuition is much cheaper than is usa i forgot

doctoral grad school in america is free, bachelors degrees though cost like 30k a year, 50k at a good school.

Going to re-tour europe with friends this summer if i have the money, going to be fucking awesome.

tough call but you know how much is the will? if its a big amount i might consider dropping poker or play so they wont know and still keep me on the will. get a job to fake so it makes it like im not playing poker. i guess you come from a pretty rich family so money isnt as important as job bragging. i probably just stick to poker cuz i love it so much most of the time but play it secretly so it hurts no one.

No clue what the will is, could be a lot could be nothing. They won't die for like 10+ years though so I'm not even thinking about that right now. Plus I don't want them to die cuz they r awesome cept for the whole hating poker. My dads side of the family r all rich snobby new york corporate lawyers, except for him. He's more down to earth then 90% of his family, but even he won't come close to accepting this. Hard to brag to his friends, all his friends have children who are lawyers or judges or doctors.

Also can't keep poker a secret, it's fucking annoying to constantly lie and get questioned by people. My stepmom has a psychology degree and my dad is a lawyer, getting cross examined from the two of them and keeping my story straight is super fucking annoying. Plus my step mom is friends with me on facebook, biggest mistake of my life.

My actual mom (who is OK with me playing poker) is a former private investigator. So ya between the three of them lying so fucking annoying.

um, looks like its long term +EV to go to grad school and take however long you want while keeping the poker bit underwraps from your grandparents until they croak no?
