So right now I hate my school/major with a passion and can guarantee I won't be a chemical engineer ever in my life. But I will graduate this spring with a bachelors in it. I was going to get a masters in the 4 years but decided to drop it simply due to it requiring a large amount of work I don't see a point in doing when I won't be that as a living or anything close to it. My current life plan is to play poker for a living after I get out of school while having a part time job somewhere where i'm insanely over qualified (like receptionist or some easy 16 hrs a week shit) mostly just to maintain a social life (plus a steady paycheck will be nice). Thinking that I will probably be a 2/4 grinder (which I'm currently playing) when I graduate in May (maybe 3/6 keepin my fingers crossed). I have a friend who I can live with from may to December for super cheap, like 400 a month total rent since he is going to be taking an extra semester to graduate. Also I am planning on becoming a part time student next semester, I only need to take one more class to graduate, so i'm going to take that class alone and use the spare time to put more time/focus into poker and having fun. Maybe try and actually put in like 35 or 40k hands in a month instead of the 20-23k I normally put in right now.
There's my plan, now here's the problem. Parents don't know this. My mom knows I want to play poker for a living and is OK with it, but she doesn't know I dropped the masters and that I want to switch to part time. But talking with her about life isn't my main concern, it's the talk with my dad. My dad doesn't know how much poker I play, or that I want to play it for a living. He thinks I want to become an engineer or enter the professional world with some other full time job or go to grad school. Everyone in my dads family is a lawyer or doctor from a prestigious school I mean Yale/Brown/Harvard/etc. I will be the first one to not do this and will be looked down on by the family. My grandparents have both said they will cut me off of any money if I continue to play poker (they said this like 2 years ago).
I have to tell my parents, bout my future life plans over xmas break (at the latest). I am wondering if anyone has advice for how to carry out this conversation, arguments to make about it, etc. The largest argument of, "look at how much money I'm making" won't work because for my dads family it's not about money it's about job bragging about how great there kids are. What ways would you approach this problem, I'm sure someone on this website had to face a similar problem at some point.
Also any criticisms of my life plan, like back up of bachelors in engineering from a top 20 school with a 3.3 or so GPA isn't good enough, or what part time jobs to look for are welcome.

I think instead of a pointless job to keep your life ticking you should volunteer for a charity (this is what I do). Not only will that ameliorate your parents' views about you playing poker, it may make yourself feel more useful to society. It's also really really interesting, and because you are a volunteer no-one treats you like their bitch or anything like a boss would. Good luck. |

I will definitely spend time with charities, volunteering, donating etc. I think the charity to part time job ratio will become highly dependent on how much money and how reliable poker is. The better poker is going for me the more I will spend time volunteering. Good plan about telling this to parents, it actually may help a bit. Thanks.

true and this is my attitude and pretty much my moms. Her view is "as long as you are making a living for yourself and are happy there is nothing else I want" I would just like to not be disowned by 3/4 of my family (everyone in my moms family except my mom plus my entire dads family. |

You're dad and his family sound like jerks. Disown them before they disown you would be the most agressive line, although may turn out to be -ev in the long run...
But seriously that sucks. Just explain that it's what you want to do and you can always go back to school if you change your mind. If they have a problem with it, it's their problem not yours . |

You can still pull 100k years playing 2/4 & 3/6 with a full time job. I don't understand why you completed a degree you have no intention of pursuing as a career. If you have some interest in the field you've studied you should at least try it out for a couple of years and get some experience. Engaging in a menial job such as secretarial work or any other non-professional or non-trade occupation will be a waste of time. |

I have zero interest in the field I majored in. I only majored in it because by the time I hated it completely it was to late to switch to a new major without having to take an extra year to finish. Also I am just getting the degree as a backup plan in case poker doesn't work out for me. |

You realise every man and his dog has a degree. Having a degree is not a backup plan. If you have no experience you will not get an interview 2 years out of uni. |

Also part of the reason why I would have part time jobs places would be to have experience places, could get part time job at an engineering firm if I find there to be a need. Realistically though i won't get a job with the degree, I will just go to grad school and get a PhD in biology if poker doesn't work out. |

eh how about doing a study in which you are actually interested in
finish the bachelor
start another bachelor
play poker, study something you find interesting --> win @ life
working part time as a receptionist or in a field you are not interested in sounds stupid |

not too interested in doing another bachelors...would be to much money w/o enough gain
doing grad school in something I find interesting will almost certainly occur if I become to bored w/ poker to do it for a living or just life fail at poker and need to do something else for a living. I will probably read up on things i'm interested in all the time, but going to school and trying to play poker at the same time would be to draining to do either very effectively. |

tough call but you know how much is the will? if its a big amount i might consider dropping poker or play so they wont know and still keep me on the will. get a job to fake so it makes it like im not playing poker. i guess you come from a pretty rich family so money isnt as important as job bragging. i probably just stick to poker cuz i love it so much most of the time but play it secretly so it hurts no one. |

No clue what the will is, could be a lot could be nothing. They won't die for like 10+ years though so I'm not even thinking about that right now. Plus I don't want them to die cuz they r awesome cept for the whole hating poker. My dads side of the family r all rich snobby new york corporate lawyers, except for him. He's more down to earth then 90% of his family, but even he won't come close to accepting this. Hard to brag to his friends, all his friends have children who are lawyers or judges or doctors.
Also can't keep poker a secret, it's fucking annoying to constantly lie and get questioned by people. My stepmom has a psychology degree and my dad is a lawyer, getting cross examined from the two of them and keeping my story straight is super fucking annoying. Plus my step mom is friends with me on facebook, biggest mistake of my life. |

wow thats pretty fuckin hard to lie than, cross examine by a lawyer and a pychologist. the biggest problem was choosing a wrong major to go into. Im not a selfish guy so i tend to make my parents somewhat happy even though i might be less happy of what im doing but its not like i will be super sad by choosing a mutual way, its just it wouldnt be my first choice. lucky for me they don't mind me playing poker. How long do you see yourself playing poker 5years, 10years 20 years? I can't see them accepting you being a poker since you are coming from a prominent family and most smart rich family are very stubborn.
if you are a gambler i might tell your dad you want to commit suicide telling him you hate school and don't want to disappoint him by playing poker and stressing the hell out atm??? would this be an option cuz i don't see anything eles working. suicide might be too extreme but i don't know this is a pretty bad situation.

I see myself playing poker for the forseeable future, like as long as I am making a good enough living at it I want to play it. So for arguments sake we'll say 25 years. I am thinking right now I may try and say I want to get a PhD in biology and am taking time off to have fun before going to school. I may be able to pull this off because I can say I dropped the masters because it's extra work which I don't need. |

The road to wealth in america is prestigious private schools that set you up for prestigious undergrad -> prestigious undergrad -> prestigious high paying job or prestigious grad school then prestigious high paying job. The system locks you out of the process if you break the "prestigious" chain. For the vast majority of us it begins when we are 5 and go to first grade at our crappy underfunded public schools. The prestigious private undergraduate schools then scoff at our marks because they were obtained at the crappy public schools.
You were born into the gated community and the good life. You were born in a position to take advantage of the system. Why on earth would you throw it all away? Lets get real: most mid-stakers make what a teacher would make. Even if you manage to improve and succeed you'll still only make a fraction of what you could have otherwise. Your background and family connections set you up for higher level positions.
Poker is a profession for (1) Poor people or (2) Degenerates. I don't know a single serious poker player who doesn't fit either or both of these. I fall flatly into (1). The first day I made over 100 dollars I shit my pants thinking about how rich I was. I only play now so I don't have to be a waiter. Other players here play because their only options are quite literally mcdonalds or manual labor.
Almost all of us will never obtain what you already have handed to you. Even the luckiest of us who have scored donkament wins still earned less in our donkament win years than your father does on an average year.

My father is not rich, he's a standard prosecuting attorney because he turned down a corporate lawyer job long ago due to him having a soul. He makes like 80-100k a year (has varied jobs so varied income) and that's what he has made for like 20 years now. I just assume he has a ton of money saved because I calculated that he only spends like 30k a year tops, so he has been putting away like 40+k a year for about 20 years now. My uncle and aunt and cousins are all corporate attorneys but my dad burned those bridges a while ago. I also hate the corporate lawyer elitist snobs in my family so much, they are close to the worst people I have ever met. I never ever want to become a lawyer or elite snob like them. |

I think that the real question here is what type of life you want to live. If money is a really big deal for you -if you need to be winning at least 500k/y at a steady rate then you shouldn't even consider dropping out. The main problem with poker is that it is not consistent, meaning you can have good and bad months, for now that you have no obligations like family and such it might sound great but when you decide to settle down this can and will be a major problem.
I really hope those reflections help a bit. Good luck with your decision. |

What about being a teacher ? I don't know a lot about studies in US. But I mean, being a teacher can be great and you have free time to play poker and thus have a nice extra income with poker. |

Your choice what you want to do, you just have to think of the long term, will you be happy in say 15 years if your making like 1-200k a year maybe more in poker, will you still like the game then ? Maybe finishing a 4th year wouldn't be bad for something to fall back on ? keep both parties involved happy?> |
