After quitting poker I had a good run in sales with the help of my dad but it was a gift and a curse that ultimately destroyed me. Then, I got this idea in my head to just work a simple job in a grocery store like this guy from a minimalist documentary. That got me no where. Today, I am a retail cashier. It sucks but it gets me money. It's still getting me no where. I have a degree from a good university (albeit a history degree) and it sucks to work entry level retail jobs.
So, I don't have the answers. It's a personal thing. A lot of my poker friends have quit poker and are really thriving in other areas but it took a lot of talent and hard work.
One thing I will say is that PLO variance is crazy. Back when I was playing I did a lot of research with bankroll and variance and I thought I had to be a hu plo bumhunter or a volume (rakeback) guy to get by. I also could have kept a larger bankroll and/or larger safety net (liquid savings). I also could have taken my medicine and moved down after major swongs at higher stakes. Just because it's possible to make $2 million in a year playing 25/50 PLO does not mean that it will happen. Risking $100k to attempt it is probably not a good idea. |

You might be correct in not working hard at the sales job depending what the payout structure looks like and the situation.
I think a lot of people are kind of derpin along or at least feel that tension at times. I work a pretty shitty job and then come home and listen to music and post on LP (mostly to myself). If that ain't derpin' I don't know what is. |

If you live in America, the new gambling law is going to fuck you over pretty bad. This goes for poker players, sports bettors, slot players, etc.
The easiest way for me to explain it is that in 2025, if you win $100k and lose $100k for the year then you should be break-even when it's time to do your taxes. Starting in 2026, if you win $100k and lose $100k for the year, then you still owe $10k in taxes. It'll make life difficult for full-time gamblers from all walks of life. |

I stopped playing 16 years ago, about the time when legislation around online poker in Poland made it downright impossible to legally play.
It's been a mixed bag at first, but now it's been better then ever, and looking back I realize how stressful and mentally taxing (albeit also fun) the days of playing poker were for me.
I can't even imagine relying on the game nowadays, with how much worse it's gotten. |
