If you could make 5-10k from online poker every month, what would your life be like? I'm 26, living with my parents, and have little life experience. What's my most +EV move? I feel like your job is a huge part of your lifestyle. Being on the computer at home doesn't exactly help me improve as a person. What are things I can do to improve myself/better my life?

Related thoughts:

I own my own car and house. It's being rent out where rental income > mortgage.
I just got my BA in finance last spring. Have not had job yet.

Give me ideas. I want to improve myself in every aspect as well as do things that would make me happy.

Travel, read, live well, sleep well. Find awesome people to spend a lot of time with. Learn, see and try lots of things and find out what you enjoy then do more of that. Write introspectively every now and then, think about where you're at and where you should be going, what steps to take. Wear sunscreen

I had to check your name on the post to make sure it wasn't me. Apart from the fact that I'm 27, I'm in exactly the same situation, got my BA in accounting and finance this year, making 5-10k p/month and just chilling at home while I own my own house. Not entirely sure what i'm doing with my life either lol.

poker is soooo much easier when you flop setsLast edit: 31/12/2013 09:48

i'm writing up something really really great for setting away from the table life goals for poker players, i realized i spent 3 years of my life really not improving on anything outside of poker and decided to change and started writing about it

Find a job outside of poker and play poker as a hobby. You don't want to be 30+ stuck in the same boat. Poker will always be around, but if you're 30+ with almost no real experience, there's no chance you can go from poker to a job.

Wish I had more time to do some posting as there have been some cool threads on here but for now just feel like getting some words down.

I mean I know it has been said a million times but it comes down to relationships, experiences, and sense of purpose. There are no hard and fast rules. Everyone is different. Most everyone is not always honest with themselves or even can grasp what is important. It is not an easy task. Especially in the US we are constantly getting bombarded with and signaled all sorts of things our whole life that in a way we need to improve our situations and in a way don't need whatsoever. For example, we need to wear clothes. If we want to improve our chances of quality relationships, yes, clothes do matter. Buying x b/c some advertisement tells you you will be cool and attractive and wanted in your desired tribe, however, is what is messing with everyones' brains. It could definitely help but bottom line is the only way to be cool and attractive and wanted in your desired tribe is to be cool and attractive and wanted in your desired tribe. While there could be some hacks and shortcuts available here and there, magic bullets do not exist.

Bottom line, it is really about connecting, engaging, doing, adding, creating, helping, growing, learning, accomplishing, building, acquiring, experiencing, stimulating, inspiring, energizing, value. Action over passivity. A motive of joy, laughter, compassion over ego, greed, selfishness. Pride and self-esteem based in virtue, ethics and what you do with your limited time, energy, and resources on this earth. You are a sum of your actions.

Now, for specific advice based on your post:

First thing that jumps out is if you make $60-120k a year, have a car and are making money on property you absolutely, positively need to move someplace cool and get your own place ASAP!

After that there really is not enough info but other comments:

- Be as honest with yourself as possible. $60k/yr playing 70 hours/wk with paper thin edges and huge swings and not much room for improvement is A LOT different than $120k/yr playing more or less when you feel like it with generally, relatively large edges and more manageable swings with the ability to ramp volume/profitability up or down more or less when you need to. No one can ever truly know where they are exactly on that spectrum I am just illustrating a point.

Where you got your BA, how you did, extracurricular activity, personality... Basically, tangible skills, soft skills, and quality relationships in relation to other people that want jobs that you might want is also extremely important.

Cheers

Happy New Year LP!

travel, lift weights, play poker, be a kid forever

thats what I hope to at least

Edit: Leave way below ur means, so you never really need a job, specially if you play poker. Every year have an excess of cash that allows you to retire early (like thewhoosel) or to stop working if you have too.

At 45, find a wife 15-25 years younger. You need to be doing sports/lifting to remain young enough to do this (unless you are insanely rich for some reason )

Look into becoming a mortgage specialist. Shouldnt be too expensive to get accredited and you work on commission. aka you work as much or as little you want and you can have that on your resume. With a finance back ground, it shouldnt be tough for you too

Im only good at poker when I run good

I would travel and do some martial arts for fun.
will do it soon

I don't understand how so many people can make 5k+ , or even 3k+ /month off poker and not take advantage of the freedom poker gives you to play from anywhere in the world.

I dont know what a dt drop is. Is it a wrestling move? -OlyLast edit: 01/01/2014 03:43

How can you afford a personal chef with 5-10k earning a month? The only people I meet in London who has personal chefs earn in excess of £1mil per year.

A good personal chef is expensive. If you employ an Okay one, might as well go eat out instead. Also, a good chef requires good ingredient and that costs a lot too.
