What Tablet?

I wanna get a tablet to travel with and use on campus, but I hate using apple products (don't get me wrong, they're usually quite good but I just don't like their approach, it's a preference thing). So, from what I've see over the last 4 months while occasionally researching on the web, that leaves me with either the Samsung Galaxy or the Asus Transformer Prime.

I think Samsung is coming out with a note 10.1 and that Asus is preparing a special edition of the Transformer Prime with a better screen and a fix to some gps problems.

That's the jist of what I know - what do you guys know / think about the tablet market, and what's the best non-apple choice right now? And is it worth it to wait for something that's coming out, like the note 10.1 or special edition Primes?

Depends what you want to use it for and what specs you want ie/ USB/HDMI, certain screen size etc. I just bought a budget 'Zenithink C91 Upgrade' yesterday (seems to actually be better or equal than a bunch of big brand tablets out their ie/ Xoom, AT100, playbook etc). I went low price because I think now is a bad time to buy a tablet (unless you can pick one up cheap of course) with a slew of new arrivals on the horizon. For example their is the new Acer A510 coming out for $450 which will put further pressure on the industry to innovate or drop prices. Which is what the new ipad has done by having the ipad 2 drop in price. Basically the ipad 2 dropping like it has means the value proposition of the other tablets has come under pressure. The new screen of the new ipad will mean all the Android tabs will be getting 1200+ screens like for the Prime (or the rumoured 2560x1600 11.6" Samsung). Plus windows 8 is around the corner and also there are murmers of Google releasing a tab as well as a possible new Kindle Fire on the way. On top of that hardly any Tegra 3 tabs are out yet.

If you want a top end piece of kit I'd be waiting a few months to see what develops.

Then of course there are slates...

Windows 8 isnt til October at the earliest android 5.0 is rumored for around thn also. Samsung is rumored to be developing tablets w/ res 2560x1600 (realistic since samsung makes apples 2048x1538 or whatever apples new ipad res is)...asus is comin out w/ a tab w/ 1920x1200 res and is rumored to be i think $700+ and Q3 maybe release (release date and pricing r guesses)...i have an asus transformer that i like cept for it has a rebooting error ever since upgrading to ics which is outrageously annoying. Tab 10.1 and transformer prime r also great tablets.
All that said, ipads are the best tablets on the market, its not even debatable.

we have the samsung galaxy 10.1 tablet at work
its pretty laggy and feels like shit compared to the ipad which feels pretty fluid and nice.
sometimes the galaxy doesnt turn on, noticeable lag in animations when using it, lag in the screen-rotation etc.

no hipster but apple is owning the tablet market.

Given the new screen, the new iPad is a no brainer. Make sure you can return it within the first 30 days or w/e in case there is substance to reports that the new iPad tends to overheat to uncomfortable levels.

Nitting it up since 2006

Yeah I've owned both an iPad and currently a Galaxy Tab. I use the tab as an infotainment center in my car, but would prefer the iPad if I could fit it in there. Apple definitely knows how to "get it right" in their products when it comes to design, and "do it wrong" when it comes to what people want (walled garden etc). I still like the samsung tab, it does what I need it to and for cheap, but I just wish it was a little more fluid like the iPad. Even the highend tab's seem to perform slower than Apple's, and I dont know why. Just bad OS + Hardware design I guess.

bye now
