So after cashing out $382 to cover the extra money for the TV i had $400, i put in 5k hands today and netted 11 buyins so that was nice, had a bit of a hiccup towards the end where i lost boat vs straight flush for 150bb then AA vs set in total cooler.

Another year came along and my Birthday was here once again. I am 22 now, and I am getting nearer the middle twenties.
And was I celebrating my birthday you may ask, what crazy party did I throw or wild things have done?
None. I am at home alone, sipping 4pack of lager and playing poker. How did this happen you may ask.


You should first be familliar with my situation. Two and a half years ago I went from Czech Republic to Scotland to study College (something between school and 'college/university' in non-uk terms), and this September I moved to the capital, Edinburgh to go straight to second year of a University.

I found a flat with 3 french students, and assumed I'd have a marvelous time with them. But although living is ok, we take care of the flat etc. but aside that I don't really get much conversation with them because they just became comfortable using french at all times and have only another french friends coming over. So no celebration is in order with my flatmates really.

Another massive hit in my confidence was the financial crisis. You can imagine my expenditure when I moved to a big city after two years from a small town college. Parties Parties and more Parties. Why not? I have been workign before and with 2 solid 30hrs per week baker experience and my HND Diploma in Administration and IT I knew I could get a job whenever I wanted. Wrong.

Since my finance started to dry up around mid-december, I sent about 40 jpba apllications and I had 1 (One) Interview. Apparently nobody likes part-time students anymore.
The only job I got two weeks ago is house to house distribution and collection of home improvement crap catalogues (which is actually quite useful for someone but I'd never buy anything). This job had about $16 return for around 9 hours of work. Not much really.
So I got hit hard by money shortgage. I have a fund in Czech currency that covers approximately my rent and bills, and then about $130 per month for everything else.

So I had to cut on socialising almost completely, was 120 days without contact lenses which I wore day by day for 5 years prior to that and even my food is the lowest value with some weeks consisting of chinese instant noodles and pasta with spice only. And I even couldn't afford to travel to my local sport, floorball which I used to play on Top level before coming to the UK.

Luckily enough, I still got my amazing Girlfriend which I got from my glorious first months, and who once saved my neck with borrowing me money for rent. But unluckily for today she found herself a simmilar job, just three times better paid and easier (she doesn't collect catalogues back and doesn't deliver crappy bathroom stuff back after the orders, if there are any)


So this is why I am alone on my birthday, sipping beer and posting a blog which would in previous years usually come with my massive headache, puke in the bed and some random junkie next to me the day after.


But don't get me wrong, I am not feeling down or anything. I got a lot of time for studying and reading (which makes me a star and by far the major contributor to all my classes), I am in a serious relationship for the first time in my life and I enjoy it, I got some moneyz sent over for my birthday which will help a lot now, and also I got poker, which somewhat replaced starcraft for now when I need to suckout all the theory before adding time for THE GAME again, and of course two bestest sites in the world and the great people in them, TL and LP.

I am satisfied with 8BB/100, learning how to use tracker from the very beginning and massive amount of information I gathered thanks to LP, Pokerstrategy, Pokeroom school, High Stakes Poker, and others.
I think I got decent base for my future poker progress and hopefully I will feel confident to move up pretty soon.

got my degree today officially after abillion years of pending

basically i was going for a 4-year math degree and took 4th year 3 times in my 4th, 5th and 6th consecutive years finally said screw it with like 3 half-credits remaining to complete and just took a 3-year degree after much stress

but yeah i guess i'm supposed to be all like.. WOOT cause its a milestone. but i guess its just good to be done, and if i ever want to go back for further education i have a piece of paper saying i am not a total newb?

So I was railing my friend who thinks he is the next big thing becaue hes had a few nice scores... aka 3 and there not mosnter scores or anything. He tells girls that hes a poker player when were out at the bar lololol. Lately Ive been watching him and I just dont know how. He tilts like crazy when he loses, cant resist trying to steal and plays way to many hands. Sounds to me like he is a bit of a fish.

Anyways he played this hand soooo bad for his whole stack. Called an all in from a guy how had him totally covered with 10 high. He had 109 which was two overs and I think he had a gutter with it lol. Anyways the guy shows QQ and hes rocked gg. So I started talking with him and said it wasnt a good call by any means and he starts freaking out.

"Shouldice lets play headsup right now for whatever you want Ill rock you"

So I said "Lets do it and dont ask for your money back after we play"

We played $5 Sit n goes and right now Ive won 6 and he has only won 1. Apparently I run like god though according to him. Hmm. If he only knew. lol.

Anyways that felt pretty good hahaha. I think I might have knocked his ego down about 3. He just left to go get a pack of smokes he said and that he wants to play later. So of course I will accept.

Quantum of Solace is a shitpile.

If you don't have time to read this entire review, here's all you need to know about Quantum of Solace: the second-in-command to the super villain is named Elvis, and is played by this guy:


This summer, terror has a new name: Elvis.

Imagine finding out you got rejected from community college, then finding out that your alcoholic father got arrested for domestic abuse, you lost all your life savings in a Ponzi scheme, and all of this happens to you while you're on the space shuttle Challenger. Then you wake up and it's all a bad dream, except you realize that you're at work without clothes on, and work is NASA and you're really on the space shuttle Challenger. That's what this movie is like, only infinitely worse. Everything about this movie pissed me off, save for the lesbian finger bang scene. Except even that sucked because it wasn't in the movie.

Here's the premise:

Bolivia. That's what's at stake in the new James Bond movie. Except not the entire country, just the public utilities. And not all public utilities, just 60% of the water... Yes, if a certain evil villain gets his way, 60% of the water in Bolivia will cost more.

JESUS NO!

Only James Bond—the secret agent who foiled a plot to destroy London with nuclear missiles—can make water more affordable for Bolivians! This is easily the stupidest James Bond movie since the last one. I don't know what Hollywood's obsession is with making jerk-off movies where the bad guys are "realistic." You know what's another word for realistic? Boring. If I wanted realism, I'd walk down the street to get Mexican food, and maybe stop by a Borders and pick up some magazines. You know why they don't make movies about me shopping for magazines? That's because nobody gives a shit. And that's what Quantum of Solace is: me shopping for magazines, with no Mexican food. I don't see movies for realism, and if I did, I sure as hell wouldn't watch one made by some asshole who thinks "reality" can best be represented with the aid of 219 special effects artists. Which leads me to this movie's biggest problem:

Marc Forster is an idiot.

If Marc Forster was an X-man, his super power would be ruining brands. Question: what's the difference between Oscar winning director Marc Forster, and a first-year film-school student? Nothing apparently, because his movie is wrought with compromise and stupid film-school gimmicks. There was a scene in the movie shot in Siena where Forster agreed to conditions which forbade him from using helicopter shots or showing any violence "involving people or animals." That's why when a gunshot was fired into a crowd of thousands of people, you don't see a single limb explode. Emphasis on you and not me because I imagined a scene where the bullet not only kills people, but is sentient and kills every single person in the stadium, starting with grandmas and horses, then when the last person is killed, the bullet turns into a hot alien babe who then proceeds to make love to my junk, orally. Except my wiener is really a shotgun, and I blow her head off. Too bad, hottie!

As for the film-school gimmicks, Forster cram-packed this movie with symbolism. There's a scene where some chick gets inexplicably drowned in oil, and it's supposed to parallel an iconic scene from Goldfinger. There's another scene in an opera house that "pays homage" to the Hitchcock movie The Man Who Knew Too Much, and a planefight that pays homage to yet another Hitchcock movie, North by Northwest. Then Forster made all the action sequences in the movie revolve around earth, water, air and fire. HOLY SHIT WE GET IT, YOU LIKE TO USE SYMBOLISM IN YOUR MOVIES:

Everyone always thinks that directors are super smart if they use symbolism, like somehow conveying something visually gives the movie some validity it wouldn't have had if the same message was conveyed through dialogue alone. But nobody ever asks: why? Why do pretentious artsy dipshits think symbolism is the holy grail of filmmaking? And yes, I know Forster was trying to say that oil is more precious than gold (it's not), and even if it was, that message has nothing to do with the movie because THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT WATER. Does anyone other than James Bond nerds care that some chick was arbitrarily made to look like some other chick from an old movie? If you took the symbolism out of the movie, would it make any difference? That's a rhetorical question, and the answer is my fist. Nobody cares about artsy gimmicks. Focus on making the movie not suck instead, assholes.

Marc Forster: part-time director, full-time idiot.

Characters from foreign countries usually speak english in a foreign accent instead of their native tongue in movies, because subtitles don't sit well with audiences. It's sort of a cop out, but not a big deal because there's an unspoken agreement between audiences and directors that states: "we, the audience, don't want to read and in return, we promise not to make a big fuss about you dumbing down society and culture."

Well Marc Forster has done the seemingly impossible, and found an analogue to "english with an accent," only visually. Every time there's a location change in the movie, the name of the country flashes up on the screen, but instead of using plain type, Forster uses a different font for every country. So when there's a scene in Russia, they use a font that looks kind of Russian, but is still in english.

Not only is it unnecessary and condescending, but it shows just how much contempt Forster has for his audience. Hey Forster, you know why we don't need ethnic-looking fonts to illustrate the fact that we're in another country? Because letters placed in close proximity to each other spell words that represent the names of those countries. That, and the obvious change in scenery. Where's your artsy visual symbolism now, asshole? I mean, this is some Windows movie maker shit. Even my mom who's a total /b/tard and sucks at non-linear editing knows that using fancy fonts makes her a lameass.

Hey, guess who's still an idiot? Marc Forster.

The decision to set this movie in Bolivia was puzzling, because based on my knowledge of the geopolitical influence of Latin American countries, I posit the following: Bolivia doesn't matter. Extra-Stupid! In fact, none of the scenes in the movie were even shot in Bolivia (shot in Chile instead). But what makes this plot industrial-strength stupid is that it's based on a true story. Only they forgot to tell you that. What's it called when you borrow a story without giving credit? Oh yeah, theft. But to be fair, they did change the story by making it duller:

In 1999, Bechtel corporation signed a contract with the president of Bolivia to privatize the water supply in the 3rd-largest city, and shortly thereafter tripled the water rates (source - new window). Yeah, that's right, they tripled the rates in real life... so when the bad guy in James Bond threatens to double the rates, it's like the producers are challenging you to give less of a shit. They took a non-interesting real-life story and somehow made it less interesting than real life.

And finally, no review of Quantum of Solace can be complete without talking about how extraordinarily stupid the title is. I know people all over the world jumped all over it as soon as it was announced, but I don't think anyone truly realizes how literally the title is meant to be taken. So don't email crying about how I'm not the first person to point this out, because I am, and frankly I'm writing this as a gesture of charity by sharing my genius with the world, so shut your fat mouth.

Here's what each word of the subtitle means:

Quantum: Noun

1. A discrete amount of something that is analogous to the quantities in quantum theory.

Solace: Noun

1. The comfort you feel when consoled in times of sadness or misery.

So the title literally translates to "James Bond: A discrete amount of comfort felt when consoled during a time of sadness." In the final scene of the movie, James Bond finally catches some dude he was chasing for revenge, and then Bond (Daniel Craig) shows off his acting chops by showing the tiniest glimmer of a smirk, an almost infinitesimally small, but measurable amount of consolation. It's hard to describe how incomprehensibly stupid this scene was with mere words, so here's what it looked like:


A literal quantum of solace.

Man, this review is like 10 pages long already and I haven't even started talking about the stupid boat scene (basically there's a 2-hour long boat scene where Bond gets chased by 3 boats, and it ends when Bond just decides to drive off), or how Bond spies on the super villain by driving his motorcycle up to a chainlink fence on a sunny afternoon and just listens to them talk. Quantum of Solace is a shit pastry. Avoid:

I hope Transporter 3 doesn't suck!

Today I had a pretty slow day for the first bit. I woke up and fired up some tables but it was just a shitty time and I couldnt get ahead if I tried. I ended up taking a break and going out to play a pretty sick game of road hockey with a bunch of my buddies until around dinner time.

I came home, made some food and then tried out the tables again. It was a lot of the same garbage just breaking even again. I have been break even for about 5k hands so it was getting boring lol. I ended up taking another break and going out and buurning a ew joints with some bddies. My buddies tha tI went out with all play poker so we talked a lot about cards and I was itching to play by the time I got home. Things went really well and I managed to make a +3 BI day.

This was the biggest winner of the day but I had some troubles on the river here. So I get called preflop by 1 guy. I was putting him on a small broadway hand like KQ, QJ, KJ or maybe even AQ, AJ. No monster hand like AA, KK, or QQ here because for this guy that is a for sure 3bet. Im pretty happy with the flop. Big hand on a big flop. So I bet out and get flat called. Now on the turn I get raised even though the turn is a brick. The only hands I can see him playing like this are maybe AK but I dont think he has that, AQ, AJ, QJ. The hands with the Jx in them are much less likely since I have the J. Then the river brings a K which hits his range of hands a bit too. KQ, KJ. All of these hands I have rocked so far. A hand like A10 just wouldnt be played that was so it made no sence for him to be holding that and if he was it was a total cooler. So I make the call and Im happy buddy is just a total retard. Ship.

Obviously I really like my hand Preflop but I do not like how I get so many callers. I made a pretty big raise preflop... I honestly cant remember why I made it that much I think it was a rediculous raise lol and with 3 callers Im not happy. So the pot is huge on the flop and my Cbet size would be pretty much putting all 3 players all in so I make the bet. Sure enough Im well ahead and take it down.

The guy in this hand had a crappy beat laid on him the hand before. I was really hoping he would be steaming because of that hand. I raised him and he instantly shoved so I decided to call hoping I would be in a flip with the guy or have him rocked. The player in this hand was a pretty fishy character. It felt to me like a lot of the time he was trying to push guys off hands with his stack and it had been working for him. This hand I decided to take the passive route on him to see if I was right. Im curious if maybe a 3 bet would be alright vs this type of player because I am for sure ahead of his range and I have position. What would you guys have done? Anyways I checked the flop and he checked back so I was pretty sure he was weak or really scared of that A so I felt like my hand was good here. I checked hoping he would bet into me and he did jus that. I called and a 10 hits the river. This is I guess a good scare card but again I really thought he was just trying to push me off hands and the big bet on the river after a checked flop felt exactly like that. So I just wanted to look him up incase I was wrong but that wasnt the case.

This one I was almost sure I was beat but I cant fold it and I think I played it fine. I hate sticking it in with JJ pre because its in tough shape almost always. I even called it out in my head "Hes got QQ." Nice to be right but sucks to have the losing hand here.

Its nice to see that a lot of my hands that Ive lost are pretty standard shit. Its not like Im getting seriously outplayed or making terribly spewy calls so Im really happy with how I played today even though it was a struggle for a while.

Its fucking late right now, almost 4am so today Im going to be sleeping in for a while... not likely to get up anytime before 12:00 lol. Im going out to St. Catharines for the night to party with a bunch of my buddies. Should be a total shit show and I cant wait. Havent been up there partying with those guys in a while. Before though Im going to put in some hands and hopefully crush so I can go out with a good feeling about the day lol.

Here is my graph from pokerstars before i moved to ftp 2 weeks ago, its missing about 2-3k hands because i switched from laptop to desktop and i actually ended up averaging 20ptbb over 20k hands.

And here are my results on ftp for the last 2 weeks or so, I started out with a 7-8 buyin downswing but quickly recovered as u can see. Also I am up about 3-4 buyins over a few thousand hands on my laptop.

I am really confident in my game right now, and I have recently started listening to my intuition almost completely. This has led to some big laydowns and big calls that are almost always right. I have found the fold button and I really think im playing on a far higher level than I ever have previously. Starting next week I will be moving up to 100nl. Im really in no big hurry because I am winning good money right now. I have gambled enough and to be honest I just dont give a shit anymore. Im tired of being poor.
