Live Poker. How do you... by hiems, May 13

I wanted to mix up more live play, as I feel you can learn some different skill sets from playing live...So I drove myself down to Atlantic City to play $1-2. Anyway long story short...the game was really easy, and I won some money, which was nice. One of the guys at the table was being really loud and constantly talking... and looked, sounded, and acted exactly like Mike Matusow. I said that hes just like Mike Matusow. Turns out hes actually his cousin. What a sick read!

Anyway...My question is regarding conversation at the table.

When people started conversations with me earlier in the session I just ignored them for the most part as I wanted to just focus on everything that was happening and try to process information.

But I dont know what it is, whether its "because its interesting to talk to people" type or thing or "Its really seems akward as hell and a dick move to just keep ignoring people at the table" type of thing...later in the session I started to talk to some of the players. The problem is that its really hard to pay attention to hands that are going on while doing this, and its definitely +EV, especially in the learning department, not to talk to people at the table.

So I guess my question for people with some live experience is how do you balance your focus and the social aspect of being at a poker table? (Ex. I would assume an ipod would help).

What is poker? by LemOn[5thF], May 13

Seriously, I almost forgot.

About a month ago I got a serious doomswitch.. some 40BI below EV in a span of 7 days. No big deal, thats poker and I just grinded through it while focusing on my A game.
The only problem is I didn't.

Instead I tried Dota 'for a couple hours' and played some 150 hours of it since then.

A combination of frustration from poker and my deeply rooted Dota addiction basically meant that I got out of touch and played like crazy on Iccup, it just seems like so much more fun than poker when money is not my motivator, its simply easier to unwind playing Dota than poker after a long day at work.

So I haven't touched poker, LP or anything poker related in over a month now. I lost my SN on Stars. And I still deep down have a stigma from losing since I quit after a doomswitch.

Luckily, I will have 2 weeks of holidays starting Friday, first in a very long time. I need to get rid of the stress, recharge my energy and just gently cuddle with poker on a site that doesn't force me to play a million hands per month and restore the fun I always had playing poker.

P.S. Sorry to all for being out of touch, dota is such a time and attention guzzler

Mission Accomplished by NewbSaibot, May 12

I'll keep this one short and sweet. So after making $800 profit in a single session of live NL200 last week, I took the plunge and bought in for a single table at NL400 online because fuck it, thats why. Ran it up to $1700 because I'm a good player. Next night all the NL400 tables are full with long waits and the only open table i could find was...... NL1k lol. But whatever, a buyin and a half has worked before right? Besides this could really jumpstart the ole bankroll.... for when I take my single buyin shot at 25/50. Unfortunately I ran into a 200k winning reg who must have been tilted or something b/c he put me allin with 99 preflop once, 3 barreled air and rivered bottom pair for the win, plus a couple of other spots I cant really remember and wiped me out. Pretty sick really, cant complain since he crushes the game across multiple sites but his play still seemed way out of line.

But I did accomplish my mission, that being playing NL400 and doing well lol. I played live last night and soul crushed everyone. I think they were even starting to get mad because I must've played something like 70/50 raising almost every hand I was dealt. 2 people even left to go to another table and 2 others switched seats at my table. And while I assume variance is a little softer at live stakes due to fewer hands dealt, I got it in preflop QQ vs KK, nut flush vs boat, and a couple of counterfeit hands where the board ran out a straight on me for a split vs some TPNK bullshit I had dominated. I even laid down top 2 vs a fish getting 3:1 on a 80BB pot when he donkbet a paired turn and then showed me nothing more than an OESD.

So now I cant decide what I want to play right now, live or online. My hourly is better online but of course it's a lot more mental work playing against people out of my league. Live is such a haul and backbreaking, but it's also relatively easy. If I want to play tonight ill come home smelling like cigarettes which I'm not really in to, so that has a certain factor too.

Finally I find out that some new poker legislation is going into effect in Florida allowing uncapped buyins which will ultimately turn it into the next gambling epicenter as far as I can tell. I'm within driving distance of all of these casinos if I wanted to make weekend trips out of it. But I fucking hate where I live right now and could see myself moving there! Especially since right around the time this happens the UIGEA will take on some new twists, and I'm deathly afraid of investing heavily into online play just to have the christians finally win and be banned for life. I could def see myself beating 5/10 live for a living once I built up a roll and got used to living in a casino. So many things to consider!

Oh, and sorry for not keeping this short and sweet.

Man the Right side is pretty good. by YoMeR, May 12

Well not quite as good as the left side but still. Funny thing happened today tho.

note: shameless brag

ONEGOODPLAYER,

Nice going. By being smart enough to park yourself at a Bad Beat Jackpot table, you've won a nice chunk of the latest jackpot that was popped at 16:58:54 on 2010-05-12. Here's a look at the details:

Bad Beat Jackpot: $214,956.76
Players' Share: $281.45
Your Cut: $1,688.70

And the fact i made a few buyins too during the session makes a nice fat session to dampen my massive spending. The food here in philly is absolutely amazing. Def gotta load up before i get back.

The Shield by Perisie, May 12

i watched first season of the shield last year
it was fucking fantastic

at first it was so similar to dextar that i cringed. the characters were so similar to dexter, meh.

but after a few episodes, the characters have their own merits (unlike dexter).

the main thing about this series is
1) its consistant
2) its violent
3) its action packed

im onto the middle of season 2 now and not a single episode has disappointed

apparently The Shield has 7 series, which i find hard to believe, but i guess thats what i get from not living in USA

if you like Lost, or Dexter, or ER, or whatever, then you'll find The Shield to be really fucking awesome.

i hope it continues to be as good for the next 5 fucking series (how can this be possible!!)

watch The Shield here on tuduo

Blind revelation by Chewits, May 12

I was playing a long MTT session yesterday. It had been a so-so day, with one FT but no wins. I rather foolishly decided to play the $11 SCOOP at 1am GMT. Since i started grinding at 2pm i was being a bit over ambitious in thinking i could grind it out. At 1am i was feeling great. Playing good and really up for the long session. Then around 2:30am i was sooooo tired, couldn't keep my eyes open. So rather reluctantly I decided that I could not play any longer as there was no way I could last another 8 hours at least for FT.

So rather than just quit and fold out I thought I would have a bit of fun. I got some black tape and put it on my screen to cover my hole cards. Yeah. I was gonna play blind.I wanted to see how it would develop.

Before I hid my hole cards I had about 13k stack, with average stack of 19k. I actually did not think I was gonna last too long. My plan was just to play in position and use pure aggression to fold out hands. It was really quite interesting. I would give myself a range of cards that I believe the villain would put me on and go with that. Rather surprisingly I was running rampant lol. I managed to chip up to 30k stack, with average of 21k. I was then starting to think, hey maybe I should just keep playing. But nah I was super super tired, and It was just not worth it busting out in 100th for stupid amount of dollars. I lasted a bit longer, keeping up the aggression. I also discovered I had folded KK UTG. xD Anyway It came to an end about 45mins after playing blind, by getting called down. I had 3bet and was repping AK hand and he didn't buy it and called me down with TT. Doh!

It was fun and really interesting. Sometimes when playing MTTs it is so easy to go into a nit up mode. I think I will def try to be a bit more aggressive with a medium stack.

On another note, good luck for the SCOOP ME all LPers. I will be playing the Low.
