risk by sawseech, September 02

there is no need for me to take on any more risk at the table than is inherent to my playstyle which, even when dialed down, is still massively violent. this is my nature, to attempt to dominate my opponents for every waking moment of their lives, and for me to exult in my destruction of them. it's who i am.

i don't always need to do it. in fact, almost all of the time i can just do my thing and wait for my opponents to offer up a win. all that i have to do is be present to accept it. that's real, and that's intelligent and that's what it means to be a poker player.

oh, and there's that thing about matching your style to the format being played and working backwards from the objective. minor details such as playing a gigantic field donkament with the intention of winning the fucking thing starting right the fuck now and suchlike.

restraint. the word is restraint and to understand that it leads to stress and that the way to get it out is by fucking.

August 2010 by Spicy, September 02

I won't be posting my graph because I'm lazy and this is not a results blog anyway, but rather a brief reflection.

Resultswise I played 50nl/25plo/50plo and ran bad early on in the month. I started redeeming my month a week and a half ago and ended up -$150. I did pick up $150 from the LP BBP rakerace so I'm up for the month after bonuses and rakeback.

This month, I've taken up a real life SC1 friend as a poker student. I've also staked him a $200 starting bankroll even though he has very minimal experience. I'm usually very conservative about these types of ventures but I have a lot of faith in him because he can put in the hours and was B+ on ICCup. This will a fun personal challenge for me and by the end of it I'll have some decent coaching experience as well as the satisfaction of my friend's success. I'm going to start putting in hands for my HU bumhunting stake starting this weekend so that should also be interesting.

Originally, that's all I was planning to do with poker this September. I've been actively trying to get involved in a lot more student organizations at my university. I was gonna cut down on poker and make the most of my sophomore year developing my networking and leadership skills. However, FTP is making me reconsider with a $500 bonus and only 21 days to clear it. It's a bit frustrating but I guess I can fit in some time to clear as much of it as I can.

On that note, I don't have any money on FTP atm so I'm looking to transfer 1k from stars to FTP sometime next week (however my pokerstars transfer limit is still at its minimum and I emailed them to increase my transfer limit but they declined so wtf). If anybody can give me more information on that, I would greatly appreciate it.

ugh this month is going to be a sick test of time management

vegas report/coaching/new place/ect by TimDawg, September 02

Hey, what's up everyone?

I thought I'd go ahead and give everyone a brief Vegas trip report since that's a way more interesting and fun read than the other stuff I'm going to post about. All in all, it was an great time. Myself, Bob, Mez, Doomer, Doomer's friend Shane, and Ket stayed at TjBentham's house. Everyone in the house got along really well, which was really cool. Before heading out there, I was kind of going through a really weird time and probably the worst depression of my life. It was a combination of many different things, some I don't mind talking about, others I'd rather not talk about. But anyway, the reason I wanted to say that was because I think staying in the Vegas house for a month was one of the best things for me in a lot of different facets. As far as poker growth, learning, and just motivation, there really isn't a substitute for living with just poker players every single day. Eat, sleep, and breathe poker 24/7. Doomer especially helped a bunch. Just about every day we would sweat each other and just discuss different lines, pros/cons to them, and just random new ideas and concepts. Doomer, myself, and Shane also went to play live at mostly the Bellagio/Wynn quite a bit. Live poker is just so LOL in so many ways. I've finally come to realize how unique and different it is to online poker. My results live were pretty disappointing. At the beginning of the trip, I wanted to make some money and get some confidence going before playing 5/10, so I started out grinding 2/5. In probably 2 sessions, I did pretty well and made 2kish. Around that time I was also starting to crush the 1/2 deep games on stars. That combined with getting sweated and always talking hands with guys in the house had my confidence at an all time high. I started playing 5/10 live and started to get back to the good ole 2/4 games on stars that I've done pretty well in the past at. I continued to crush online, while I sort've broke even/lost a bit playing 5/10 live. I still felt really good about the way I was playing and started to sit in some soft 3/6 and 5/10 online games. Well in short, I had a couple of nasty sessions at 3/6 where I had position on 3 or 4 huge fish with 200bb+ stacks and got crushed a few times at 5/10 live. Oh well....

So in summation for my results in vegas, I would say I was prob +$7k or so at my highpoint and prob finished the trip around even or maybe up +$1k including all expenses. All in all, I learned a lot and that's what's important to me. I now feel I'm once again a strong midstakes winner and will continue to get coaching from dzoo and jamie to try and improve and break into becoming a 5/10+ reg.

Now as far as degen/crazy nights go, we really didn't get too wild but had a few epic strip club nights with tj/KET!!!!/clay/dzoo/jamie/some of their houesmates. Pretty standard though and nothing too crazy happened (that I remember).

One night however, I will have a hard time ever forgetting. I would for sure say it was one of the best nights of my life It started off with all of us going out to eat at some sort of asian type place at the Palms with hopes of getting into the Pokerstars party later that night where Snoop Dogg was performing. I don't think any of us had tickets to get in but we were just hoping to meet up with some sort of connection there. Well if my memory is correct our good friend Peachy Keen was able to get Elky to pull some strings You da man Eric (thanks to Elky as well). So Shane is able to sneak me in using Bob's ID (Bob you da man as well). We go inside of Rain and start getting drunk right away and by the time Snoop came on around 1am, kush filled the air as I was legitimately shitfaced. Shane, Bob, and I were together while everyone else was scattered throughout the club. So Snoop comes on performing his old hits like Gin and Juice and newer ones like Sexual Seduction. I was very drunk and enjoyed them all.
Well towards the end of his performance is when the night starts to get good. I'm sort've dancing by myself (lol), just enjoying the performance and the whole time this girl behind me in like rubbing up against me. I sorta just ignored it at first and thought it was kinda weird. Then she started to tap me on the shoulder, so I turn around and say what? She yells something... I don't hear her.....she yells again....I still can't hear.....finally she says, "CAN I GET IN FRONT OF YOU?" haha...im like yeah sure. she gets in front and just immediately starts grindin on me. So we're dancin and having a good time, then another girl (a rather large one, who i had lots of trouble moving around when we were trying to get to the front of the crowd), grabs my hand and lifts up the girl's dress (who im dancing with) and puts my hand right on her ass.......YES lol. What sucked though was that this was towards the end of the performance and when he was done the whole club cleared out very quickly along with the hot girl I was dancing with

The night continues on however and our group reunites with Clay and everyone else who are playing blackjack and drinking. I would say around 20 min after that I see 3 really tall black guys walking past us. One of them was wearing a Washington Wizards shirt and I immediately realized that they were here for the NBA Summer League that was going on in Vegas at the time. Then I look up at their faces and I know one of them right off the bat, J.P. Prince. He played basketball in college at the University of Tennessee, where I went to school at for a few years. Me being a drunk idiot, yelled out his name, ran over to him giving him a hi-five and screamed GOOOOOOOOO VOLSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! From what I remember he was loving it but who knows haha. Here is a picture of him:

http://www.lostlettermen.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/jp_prince.jpg

Literally right after that while Bob and I are laughing hysterically at what just happened, some guy almost bumps into me. I turn around and he pats me on the shoulder while smiling and says, "Hey buddy" or something of that nature. I look him in the face and it's Mark.........................

He is the controversial billionaire owner of the NBA team known as the Dallas Mavericks who is always giving the referees shit for those who don't know.

And I finished off the night by continuing to drink and play blackjack where I finished up $200ish or something. Sick night

That's it for Vegas....

I just moved into much a nicer, more spacious apartment with two good friends from high school in Knoxville. Still having a bit of trouble with a few things but I'm starting to get settled in pretty nicely. I wanted to post an update sooner but my laptop got a really nasty virus and I've been strugglinggg to get rid of it (on a friend's now). I ended up taking it to a computer repair shop and they fixed it along with 100 other viruses that the original one spurred up. I had to pay a one time fee of $100 with no guarantees that the virus wouldn't come back. Obviously the first day I get it back, the same one popped right back up It happened both times when I went to a site to download some new music. Oh well, guess I won't go back to that site. It's pretty weird though, because I've never had any problems with that site or my laptop in general in 1.5 years. Maybe someone on here could help me out. The virus is called "security suite" and basically acts as an anti-virus software and proceeds to block anything and everything. Really gay.....

Anyway, on the recent poker side of things, everything's been going really well. In the past few weeks, I've had 2 final tables, both in $100 rebuys. The first one I took down for $6k and the other I finished 4th for $6.8k after running pretty terribly at the end. I also won a seat in a $260 sat for the WCOOP main event worth $5.2k. I will want to be selling probably around 50-60% of myself in that and hopefully bring out my inner Sunday Mil luckboxing to hit a big score in that If you're interested in buying action for that I'll be selling at 1:1 like always, so just send me a PM if you want some.

The final piece of business I want to get to in this blog is coaching. Coaching is something I've thought about getting into for a long time but for whatever reason I never did. I myself have been coached by many different people including mez, dzoo, jamie217, and adam001. I can say it is without a doubt worth it. That isn't to say a lot of the time it isn't worth it. There are plenty of coaches out there who don't know what they're talking about or can't even beat the games their students are playing, are not very good at articulating their thoughts to others well, and are wayyyy overpriced. These are some of the reasons why I am confident I will turn out to be a good coach. Although my cash results have been pretty poor lately, I am still VERY confident that I have a big edge in the games I currently play and will try my best to prove that this month. I also feel that I am pretty good at explaining my thought processes pretty well and I post advice quite frequently in the Mid-Stakes Forum. Another part of my coaching that I think a lot of people will enjoy will be the price. Since I have never done this before, I'm going to start out charging only $50/hr. I'd rather not get into profit sharing or anything of that nature but I think you will have a hard time finding a good coach for this price anywhere else. Once again, I'm still trying to get settled into my apartment and fix my laptop ect, so I will not be able to immediately start booking sessions with future students but I hope to be at that point within a week or so. So if you're interested or would like to find out more about me or my coaching, send me a PM.

Here is my PTR for those interested in coaching : http://www.pokertableratings.com/stars-player-search/timdawg888

If anyone has any questions pertaining to my PTR, feel free to ask me about it as well.

Thanks for reading guys

100$+Plenty of time by LsDDeaD, September 02

Hello everyone. So the deal is this.I am mostly a live player but for personal reasons gonna stay a LOT of time at home for the next 1-2 months, and for my bad got only 100$ to invest for any purposes during that time.Thought about purchasing SC2 but I'm too easly addicted to SC and more important I would like to make some profit during this time so...what do you think is the best way to use these 100 bucks so that using the vast amount of time I could get the best win/safe ratio.I'm 1 max 2 tabling sine i'm used to live plays..Ok, I think this is more than clear, I wold be happy to read some good advics.
Thanks in advance

First NL100 Session! by SpasticInk, September 02

Oh well, haven't played much since my last entry because of school and too much partying/being tired (all random excuses). But today I felt relaxed and ready to jump into the action. Unfortunately, my client was upgraded to the "resizable ipoker software" (or whatever you wanna call it), which means that my MiniMaxMod didn't work anymore. For you who don't know, it's a modification program that makes the software a lot more playable. Not gonna make this sound like an ad, but it is really helpful and multitabling becomes a lot easier because you have a clean surface, you can use your mouse in many ways, ie. right click and you pot it, use scroll to adjust betsizing and so on...

Anyway, I decided to play anyway, started with 4 tables to get used to the software and then added 2 more. Session was a bit swingy (felt so), and I ran really good in the sense that I stacked a lot of people when I hit my set/flush etc. Did some preflop mistakes and stupid bluffs in spots where I shouldn't, but it also paid off in later situations! Also noticed some different patterns between NL50 and NL100; people seem to 3-bet/4-bet a bit more, and are less reluctant to get it in light. The regulars seem to adjust their preflop-raise sizing a lot more. Saw many people 2x, 2,5x in CO/BTN, and not only w/ garbage hands but also good hands.

Here is my graph:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/5e5bd33267370cea9cf142fe5b9b1615.png

Biggest mistake made in the session was probably this hand:

First, I misread stacksizes, thought he had 100bb or something. I blame the software. Second, I had some previous history with him where I jammed over one of his 4-bets (in btn vs blind-war). Felt that he could very possible interpret my 3-bet as a steal and cold 4-bet in spots like these. But in hindsight this is a pretty easy muck, even though people DO this sometimes, it happens very rarily.

Also jammed 99 over a BB squeese (SB flatted my raise), and got snap called by AA. Not as big of mistake I think, but I probably didn't know enough about that opponent to make it a profitable play.

This hand felt really weird. Sometimes I do delayed c-bet like that, and bet the turn instead. He leads, I decide to put the pressure a bit. I raise pretty all my Ax there as well, charching draws and stuff. When he donkbetted the river river like that I felt he tried to get a cheap chowdown with AT or something, so I pulled my hero trigger and raised. Funny thing is he tanked to the last seconds and then called. Good read by me...

Decided to lead into him since my hand just sucks but he minraised a lot of buttons, figured he'd play fit and fold. Luckily I hit my gin card. Bet the turn. Check the river to induce some bets by missed flushdraws and hopefully a valuebet by Ax (who the hell doesnt valuebet Ax there?). Worked wonders, and since this was like a couple of minutes later from my J9hh spew, he called it off pretty fast.

And the last hand, where pretty much our history in sb-vs-bb finally payed off. I pretty much jumped my chair of joy when he 5-bet.

Won the p5's open on stars by matdon460, September 02

LOL, so I got bored and started to look around on the internet. Saw that the p5's open had started so I late regged and ended up binking it for $3.1k. I ran super hot most of the tourney which made it quite nice. I like how this is the first tourney I played in a while and I win it. Guess this makes up some of the shitty days when I'd reg everything from 2 to 830.

Election time in Sweden! by DustySwedeDude, September 02

And the leaders of Men, our best & brightest, the power-drunk custodians of this lustrace, can best be described as a criminally insane school of piranha with an unquenchable thirst for the lifeblood of the innocent. On a path of destruction they shred everything they see, mocking their exsanguinating victims, offering them “hope and change” as they whimper and bleed out. They talk of high principle but they lie. - Aha of interestingtimesmagazine.com.

Not that I know that he talked about the election, but still.

I've got small bets down on the right wing coalition to win it and the social democrats to get less then 30.5% of the votes. Bad odds on the first one, had I gotten more then 1.5 I'd probably put down like 5k on it. As is I only put down an amount so that I can give whatever I win to my sister and laugh when she tries to figure out if she should be happy or sad considering the election results.

Final offer by sawseech, September 02

This is my final offer to the world of being staked. This is an opportunity to buy my mercy. I will not be staked lightly or by someone that I do not already like and certainly not without favorable terms. I understand what my image is like right now, so I will be slightly lenient on terms. Hold your peace if you do not make an offer else I will not think favorably upon you.

Pointless Atheist Ramble by palak, September 02

Had some more downswing so I took the day off from poker. In my bordem I ended up writing out my views on atheism and figured I'd post it in the unedited rough horrible form it's in now for whoever to read if they feel.

Why I am an Atheist. By a very bored person.
Some people don't understand why I am an Atheist, so due to boredom I have decided to write out my views on humanity and religion. I was raised without any religious influence in my life as both my parents are agnostic. This led me to be skeptical of religion as I grew up. It's hard to convince someone over the age of 11 that there is an all knowing entity in the sky that oversees everything. Perhaps what made religion such a hard swallow for me while I was growing up was that people who try to convert others or are adamant about their religion enough to talk about it openly are the most devout. They rarely have any real understanding of other religions or science. This leads to a very monotonous talk where any logical question like: "Besides being "the truth" what makes your religion better than say Hinduism, Buddhism, or Taoism?", "If we are created by an all knowing creator then why are we so poorly designed?", or "If humans are the special race of the universe and all that your God cares about then why did it make the universe infinite?" are simply rebuffed by "I don't know". An insightful conversation about the nature of religion or God is seldom achievable. Plus there is the high probability of offending the other person which shuts off all constructive conversation and replaces it with awkward silence for the rest of the remaining flight (or whatever other reason I had for being next to this zealot). Due to many awkward flights I now just do the smart thing and avoid religious talks with strangers. This is somewhat upsetting since religion is such a fascinating conversation.
A few years ago there was a surge of Atheist literature led by Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. The message they tried to convey is that it was time for Atheists to speak up and speak out against religion. What this movement ended up doing was making little headway into a reasonable fight against religion and instead turned many peaceful Atheists into self-righteous boneheads who violently opposed any religious thought due to what they read in a few books. Close minded "new Atheists" often did tremendous damage to the Atheist image by insulting and demeaning any religious person they spoke to. Hurting the Atheist image was hard also, we are already the most mistrusted ground in the country, even more so then Muslims. I feel this mistrust and seemingly mutual hatred between religious and atheist is due to misunderstanding of each other's views.
Religious people most often distrust Atheists with the thought of "What morals do they have if they don't believe in a God?" or "If there is no afterlife and only human punishments for your deeds then why don't you just do whatever the fuck you want and to hell with everyone else?". The latter I was actually asked my senior year of high school by a man who went on to be a NASA engineer. As an Atheist I feel compelled to answer where we (edit: we should be changed to I) get our (edit: should be changed to my) morals from.
The core to (edit: instert my personal)Atheist (edit: Atheist should be humanist) beliefs are:
1. Humanism-to do whatever possible to maximize the well being and happiness of other humans and organisms around you.
2. Tolerance-to not discriminate against a person for any reason other than if their personal actions are hurting someone. To respect others beliefs even if they are not the same as yours.
3.Empathy necessarily towards other human beings and animals if the person so chooses. Open mindedness is key for this to be successfully applied.
4.Quest for understanding- A mission to understand all questions in the universe, scientific, philosophical, or other.
These four ideals encompass all of what I believe to be the main structure of Atheist social beliefs. The 4 commandments of Atheism if you will. Atheists uphold these ideas based off an easy concept. If there is no other life then we must make the most of the life we have, further it is our responsibility as sentient creatures to ensure that future entities have the same or better life then we have. To do harm to another individuals well being or overall level of happiness is the utmost evil. All religious people will certainly agree with this line of thought as it is the same basic line of thought taught by all religions. The only difference between religious thought and Atheist thought on these principles is the punishment/reward for not obeying them. Religions belief an all knowing entity will punish you while Atheists think your punishment is that you are perceived as a horrible human being. That hopefully explains what an Atheists views on can be summed up as. Further any person can see that these views are the same as those that are taught in all major religions. It is an intuitive argument that if all the major religions came from different societies but share these common humanitarian principals perhaps it is due to these principals being naturally ingrained on humans since following them leads to the most efficient use of resources and fastest growth of civilization.
Meanwhile Atheists who hate religion do so because they have come to the conclusion that ALL people who are religious are flawed because of it. They view most religious people as intellectually inferior solely due to religion. Further they have come to the conclusion that since religion produces more harm than good it needs to be removed from humanity and that the fastest most efficient way to remove it is to argue it with whatever religious person they are having a talk to. Usually Atheists of this variety will make claims like "most wars are caused by religion" or "it's religions fault for the bad things in the world". These are very short sighted claims. Upon examination almost all wars they claim are caused by religion are in fact caused by greed of the wealthy or power wielding class. Instead of arguing wars are caused by religion it is much more constructive to argue that religion is a tool used by the power hungry to manipulate people into harming others for material gains. That religions crime towards humanity is that it limits our species potential for scientific and social growth. This view however is unfortunately very rarely argued. Another adverse trend of militant Atheists is to overlook how religion effects each person they talk to. Many times they will tell anyone they have a conversation with that they should not be religious. This is ill-advised, it is often impossible to convert someone who is religious to being an Atheist solely by a conversation in which you attack one of their most valued beliefs. It is much better to engage in logical well manned conversation which helps both sides come to respect each other's different beliefs rather than despise each other.
