Actually NOT allowing fights is pretty stupid. European rules forbid it and referees will stop them unless first punches were drawn and you get all that disciplinary bullshit afterwards.

There are a lot of players who want a fight, and both agree to it (the well you can't just deny as you would feel intimidated and lose the psychological edge), and fans just love it - everyone is heated for a fight but the refs. So instead of fair fights 1on1 European hockey is plagued with hidden elbows and hooks and other unfair bullshit.

Wow, you sir are extremely narrow minded. For me it's really disgusting to see that our society really has not evolved at all. On one end we try everything to stop violence to create a safer society for everyone and on the other end we allow fights because "it's part of the sport". What signal does this shit send? If I get pissed of at someone we are to settle it by fighting? The European way is obviously the correct way, if there is a fight starting you separate and then talk, the way you are supposed to settle fights.

Hockey is legit

Damn wish I saw this earlier. I love hockey, but I actually hate the fighting aspect. I wish they were game misconducts instead of 5-minutes. For me, fighting is just a way to draw clueless non-hockey fans into the sport, because hockey is pretty much the only major sport where fighting is allowed and yet not the main goal of the game. But fighting is not legal in most international leagues, nor are they allowed in college, and yet hockey is still fun to watch. I love watching big hits, I love scraps for the puck, I love physical contact when it has to do with playing the game, but fighting has nothing to do with the game, and I don't like it.

Fighting is allowed in major juniors, and its hardly a new development to "draw clueless non-hockey fans into the sport"

I understand, but my point is that for me at least, hockey is still a lot of fun to watch, and really even more fun to watch without the fighting. Also, it's not that real hockey fans don't enjoy the fighting, I just hate it when non-hockey fans say things like, "I don't like hockey much but I love watching the fights." It's almost as bad as watching NASCAR for the crashes. I'm clearly in the minority here, but I really enjoy watching hockey without the fights, and I really wish they were game misconducts instead of just 5 minutes.

Misconduct for fighting actually makes the game harder to self govern/police amongst the players and will increase the use of goon players by teams DUCY?

I think most of that is because of the evolution of the game though. Because fighting is a standard, things get tense and heated up until two heavyweights go at it. But most other sports don't have goons who do things like that, and of course most other sports don't allow fighting. As I said, I think I'm in the minority, but I'm a huge football (soccer) fan as well, and of course fighting is not tolerated, so goons are sent off all the time. In my opinion hockey would be fine without fighting as well.

On a slightly unrelated note, I'm a Caps fan, so last season sucked .
