looking for affordable online 6max coaching

I moved to PA and by coincidence I saw that I can play pokerstars in PA so I am giving it a go. I got my degree in computer science but I think I would still prefer to try to do this.

I am looking for coaching. Discerning in who I would accept coaching from.

My funds are extremely limited, but I am not asking to be staked or loaned or backed or anything. Some kind of scheme for payment would have to be developed, perhaps profit sharing? Anyone who knows me know I have a high level of potential. I am just looking to re-sharpen my game as quickly as possible. Also, I'd like to have someone skilled to check hands with and a solid strategy to be playing with, so that I have more confidence in my game and will be less effected by any runbad.

If this doesn't sound possible then I guess I will go it alone.

If any of you are a strongly winning 6max player and are interested, please let me know. I'd prefer to do this with an LPer or someone related to starcraft.

there are plenty of cfp out there that will gladly take on students at all levels, especially if you are trying to do it full-time. some of those you have to be playing 100nl already, others will take you on at microstakes. its a pretty big commitment though and they will be getting 50% of what you make for along time while you would still play on your own dime. there are guys out there that do offer cfp not as some stable but on a 1 on 1 basis but I am not sure what the terms are for something like that.

Otherwise, I think if you are looking for affordability, just get yourself a training site subscription and gto+ which is a cheap solver that is still very good and probably figure it out from there.

that site should get your PF ranges up to speed in a couple of hours and flop ranges in a couple of days

but seriously, it's 2020, you have a CS degree and want to play 6max NL cash? What is the upside? lets say you become really good again after playing/studying 12 hours a day and can make 2bb/100 at midstakes. How long is this gonna last? 1 year, 2 years? winrate will decay during that time + you have to continue living like a buddhist monk to maintain your edge. Remember this is close to a solved game w/ almost undetectable software assisting some players.

For that kind of time investment though, surely there is something with better upside for someone with your intelligence and skillset? Poker is familiar so it's a comfortable choice to go back to but I think finding a new path will have way more potential.

I already do live like a buddhist monk, to be honest. Literally.

Is the state of things really that tough? If so, that's unfortunate.

As for my CS degree - sure I could get a job, but not working for someone I'd want to work for. I am not looking to work for amazon, microsoft, etc. And I am not looking to work for a DoD contractor. And unfortunately, this is like 90% of jobs or more around here. And another factor is I am married with a house and am not really going to be moving, so job opportunities are even more limited unless remote.

I have spent some time brainstorming, but haven't come up with any good ideas for income. It feels like life kind of just pushed me back into poker. Actually what I am most interested in is just developing my land and becoming self sufficient - but during that transition some extra income would be useful.

Appreciate the input though guys.

mostly what smuft said. if you do decide to go for poker (and after you get your skills to a good level), you should consider how to at least partly transition to live as that will make poker a more viable career choice (both by income and longevity).

I don't play poker anymore, but I agree with Smuft.

Trying to get back into poker and starting from scratch in 2020 is a waste of time, especially when you're already educated.

Many of the top pros and "good" live players who I still follow on YouTube say the game is way tougher now, and it's harder to make money. (I still enjoy watching poker vlogs on YouTube, even though I haven't played poker in years.)

If you're interested in gambling and/or competition, I'd suggest craps, as it shares some similarities to the mindset you need to have while playing poker, except that the game of craps is entirely in your hands and you aren't relying making the right read of the opponent(s) next to you.

Yo travis, you looking for job/new job? I have a few open positions and having a CS background would help quite a bit. PM me if you want. I can hire remote worker (we based near Raleigh NC)

I don't understand how you would prefer to learn poker from scratch again than work for Microsoft

Agreed with Smuft, PoorUser and PuertoRican. The time and effort you need to put in online poker is just not worth it right now. Also the game gets boring very quickly when you realize it's just not possible to get those double digit winrates anymore (maybe even high single digits) unless you commit you life to the game. And even then, it will just get worse as time goes on. You can see it for yourself but if you believe what I am saying you will probably save 6 months to 1 year of your life. Try something else, there's plenty of opportunity elsewhere. I can't speak for live poker though, only online.

So, unless somehow you know of a site that is incredibly fishy and you will get at least 2+ fish in every table you are better off just not bothering in my honest opinion.

If you can find a nice live spot or get into a good PPP club or whatever it could be a nice side hustle as lostacc said, I would only suggest to not commit too much time and energy to it.

to counter smuft and locoo, if you are going to go down the poker road, stars PA/NJ is the way to do it. a good 200-500nl player is making 100-200k a year on those sites. They are keeping their mouth shut about it. There is enough steady material, I think cfp is low value nowadays.

o well thats where i play

why'd you have to do that

Anyways I already cashed out most of my bankroll. I think I am going to commit to a non-poker lifestyle, it's not very healthy anyways. Tradeoff of health vs money I guess.

just check the site in the morning, afternoon, evening. See how many games are running from 100-500 look at how many fish on avg per table. If the ratio looks good, id suggest at least trying to play semi professionally.

Use weekdays, because thats the most reliable way to see if games are good.

Poker is great if you enjoy the freedom. But it can be stressful and unhealthy if not managed right. And you won't be making that much money unless you're the top 5%. I'm in PA beating low stakes right now and cannot compete with job money long term, but the freedom is great.

I made the mistake of getting back into poker after graduating some years ago. I got into live poker for 2 years and realized it's a dead end. By then the skills I learned in college had rusted and I had to re-learn a lot of it. Programming skills rust fast with new technologies constantly being introduced. Not to mention the gap in resume (my whole resume is a gap) in case I wanted to get a 9 to 5. After live poker I began developing websites for small businesses. Haven't been doing it for long, but I wish I would have gotten into it sooner.

Use your CS skills imo. Forget poker. If you want to be independent and eventually make good money, then start a side business and grow it. There's a lot more money (for skill) in business than there is in poker. People with analytical and risk taking backgrounds are made for it. How skilled do you have to be at poker today to make 100k? Pretty damn skilled. How skilled do you have to be to make 100k in business or in software development? Average people do it all the time, and it doesn't mean having to work at an office.
