I stumbled upon it by accident, and sort of enjoyed it and got stuck. It essentially started 5 years ago when I joined a startup and since we didn't have enough people I was forced to learn certain things. So I implemented a CRM system, and started creating reports for the management and the board, since no one else knew how to use the system. I started seeing trends in the data and started adding insights to the reports. After about 2 years (and moving from Stockholm --> Barcelona --> (London) --> Chicago --> Stockholm, I decided I wanted something more stable and applied for an analyst role within a division called Sales Operations / Strategy & Planning. I didn't really have the qualifications but somehow managed to land the job after 6 interviews. I spent 2.5 years at the company and worked long hours and was just eager to learn more. I learnt the importance of thinking about everything I worked on needed to scale, and what systems can be used for what and how the systems actually work. The combination between thinking about scalability and having working systems (like a BI, or a CRM, or an ERP), you had to have lean processes in order for everything to work (sounds ridiculous) but going from 400 people to 1500 people in 2.5 years (and 50+ Markets) and working with people that are way smarter than me, it just forced me to learn. After spending countless hours of staring and analysing data, you start to notice trends (I don’t think it’s rocket science btw), and you can apply that to just about everything. Whether it’s forecasting revenue, user acquisition (paid marketing) or what not.

If I could give some advice that would have made my life easier: I wish I would have learnt excel way earlier, it was a struggle building models without knowing the basic functions. If you’re starting from scratch, try to learn SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH & Pivot Tables and you’ll be off to a good start.

I also would love to know how to program, I only the very basics of a couple of languages, but that would have made my life easier.

To summarize: Be eager to learn, learn Excel, and learn SQL. Knowing things like python is obviously great as well. But to start from scratch, Excel + SQL.

yea agree on your opinion on programming. thats why i learn it aside my chemistry phd. helps me already ton analzying all my chemistry data and think it will help a ton in the future.
