German online high-stakes cash game player Max Altergott had never cashed in a live poker event before, but today he took down the prestigious €100,000 Super High Roller event at the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino EPT Grand Final for a massive €1,746,400 first prize, beating Jason Mercier in the final heads-up.
The 22-year-old, who hails from Germany but now lives in Vienna, Austria, is one of the most respected online cash game players in the world but rarely competes in live events. He came to the EPT Grand Final on a whim because a friend was attending and he’d never been to Monaco before.
Altergott, who is known as "altiFC" online, won the event after defeating Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier heads-up. Mercier, who snagged €1,115,700 for his runner-up finish, has now amassed more than $1.3 million in prize money at this season’s Grand Final. He finished seventh in the Main Event and won the Open Face Chinese tournament at the start of the festival.
The other six players to make the money were Canadian Sorel Mizzi, Altergott’s roommate here in Monaco, who finished third, WSOP bracelet winner Timothy Adams, PCA High Roller runner-up Vladimir Troyanovskiy, PCA Super High Roller winner Scott Seiver and WSOP-E High Roller champion Mike Watson.
He said: “I felt quite confident because I’m used to playing many of these guys online, so I had a good feeling about how they play. It was a challenge for me though. It feels really good to beat those guys. I won’t lie – my heart was beating like crazy at the end.”
