29,000 Somali Children Under 5 Dead In Famine: U.S. Official

Why do we, as human beings, allow this to happen? We have the technology to tap the resources and provide food for this entire planet - we just don't do it because it's not a profitable venture. What kind of stupid reason is that to give in response to why all those kids had to die?

Everyday life is a lot less stressful if you just lose all faith in humanity.

i think if we invested more in the war on drugs and took care of those more violent problems we could go on to solve hunger shortly thereafter

Somalia has plunged again since a government was reinstated in 06, they were growing and doing quite well in the middle of that chaotic anarchy.

FYP and I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say it's not that people don't see profit in it, it's that they DO see a shit load of loss in it. Can you imagine how much money it would cost to feed 10 million people?
The World Food Program estimates that 10 million people already need humanitarian aid.

Let's say everyone gets 1 meal a day, conservatively obviously. And let's say each meal only costs $1.50. And let's say this drought/poverty in somalia only lasts for another year, again conservatively. You're looking at spending $15 mil a day for 365 days. Not including a fuckton of shipping costs.

It's just unrealistic to help so many.

It's not unrealistic to help so many - we have the food and the ability to move it to them. It's just "expensive" to help so many, so we don't do it. We're held back from helping people because of a thing we made up.

instead of spending money in the war on drugs and regulating every aspect of my life etc. better let ppl choose themselves what they want to buy and spend money to help poor ppl.

Biggest problem is you are essentially investing in helping other people who will not be able to pay back the favor. In financial theory, When you give something like a service or a loan, in this case we are providing food for people who are in need, you expect something back in return later. The idea is that when you allow someone to borrow something you deserve interest on the borrowed items. Here, even if many of these people get the resources they need, there is no guarantee that they will ever be in a state to make up for what was borrowed.

Yes, I am aware that there is no moral obligation considered in this theory. But even if you go out of your way to help others in countries that are suffering there is no telling how long your charity can last and it might not even help at all in the long run. The most ideal way to fix the situation is to give developing countries a way to produce and import themselves but some areas are in such a state of disarray that organizing this is almost impossible.
