Now I'm talking about actually fishing, with fishing poles and baits etc.
Can anyone offer any suggestions on what pole(s) are good to start off with? Also what's the least amount of supplies I should get? I don't know which weights to get, lures, hooks, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a 7-10 surf rod to catch medium sized fish, don't know which brand or which store to shop from. Also from Bay Area California so which kinds of common fish should i be researching so i know which are bottom or top feeders etc.? |

The best pole is a stripper pole. If you get lucky (or not) it might even smell of fish already. |

I used to do a bit of a fishing when I was younger but I'm no expert by any means. My best recommendation is to go to a fishing supplies shop and ask for help. From experience they only really employ people who love fishing so they'll spend hours finding the right rod/reel/tackle for you if you want or they can just make some quick beginner recommendations. |

Myth: Yeah right, so you can hog all the 11 year olds for yourself? no way dude, Im not educating the fish. | |

Well, St. Croix is the best rodmaking company out there imo. Id get a medium-stiff action 7' spinning rod. This will allow for some lighter surf fishing, yet can still be used for nearly all freshwater fishing (its ideal length for bass, etc). Make sure its medium-stiff and not just medium. You'll need a spinning reel, but the nice thing is you could just buy/have 2, one for salt water with heavier test line, 20-30lb most likely, or spiderwire has 20lb test thats actually only 6lb diameter, and higher gauges, that could be used on a 2nd spool for a medium sized reel. For freshwaterin general, 10lb test is good, just to be safe. But at the same time it depends on the fish. I am fishing for steelhead and pike currently, so I used that spiderwire and steel leaders due to teeth. For bass you really dont need a leader, and 10lb test is usually just fine for even bigger bass. All depends my man. But id start with that length/action rod I recommended, and reels are entirely up to you and your budget. I have a 10 ball bearing cardinal reel for medium light action setup and a nice shimano medium-heavy reel for my medium-heavy setup. |

u have to go with Ugly Stick personal fav i have 3 of them and they dont break at all u can bend then from tip to tip and nothing have pulled in over 15lb fish just on an ultra light setup a med action ugly stick will bring in anything with ease up to 25lb or so id say depends on line and reel setup as well...enjoy fishing u will sink an easy 1k on everything like me if u are a true die hard but ugly stick combo starts at about $30 |

Ya ugly stick is a great inexpensive option, I own 2, granted they are not my #1, I take them everywhere with me just in case. Id stick with the 7' length medium-heavy specs tho, pretty sure they make it. |

Ugh Gsr, I feel you about the dropping 1k into gear, my #1 setup is worth like 250 alone, and shit, a tacklebox full of rapalas is kinda pricey too :- |
