what you do doesn't matter as much as how you do it.
...
i think i'm going straight up live. there was a thread about how much you could make playing live and idk if i'm being overoptimistic but i believe i can make at least 50/hr playing 1/2. i think it's even more profitable than the 2/5 game spread there since players are just so so bad.
like here's an example: this one hand i raised mp to 8BB (standard) with 99 and got 4 callers, including the button against whom I was about 300BB deep. flop came A37 and it checked through. on the turn i binked the magic 9, checked to me, and i bet 50... the button insta-raises to 150. i called and check raised him all in on the river and he showed 33.
same table, ep limps, btn limps, sb limps. i make it 18 dollars to go with AJo from the bb, ep calls, btn folds, sb calls. flop came AK7 and i bet 40, ep folds, sb calls. rag turn, i bet 80, he calls. river came another trash card and sb checked to me, after which i sort of glanced at him, which he interpreted as a check i guess and he insta flips over KQ... at this point i'm still allowed to bet so i pushed him all in and the guy tanked for two minutes before calling me. WTF? LOL!!!
anyways, the games get pretty deep at the 1/2 and you can buy in for half of the largest stack so it gets a little more profitable than you'd expect. in January alone i think i made 7k over 3 trips (including the crazy night at the beau rivage) which works out to a ridiculous hourly rate.
my car got totalled so i take the hour-long bus trip down to New Orleans for 12 dollars roundtrip (which is actually way cheaper than taking your own car) and i stay at a friends for the weekend playing poker all day. i play with a 2 buyin stop loss but i've never had a losing session in the past four weeks in January. when i'm up like 5+ buyins i flip for a hundred at the end of the session but i should stop. i picked black the last four times i flipped and lost them all wtf. i think i'm betting 410 dollars on the next flip and if i win that, i'd be up and i can stop flipping peacefully.
...
in contrast, online poker is just wayy too gay. those KK vs. AA twice-in-a-row, 23o > TT, AQo > AA sessions used to be fun but now they just don't cut it for me. i'd rather play live where those things at least FEEL like a rarity. online poker makes me feel worthless so i think i'll just quit.

on a brighter note, i cashed in three of the last 11+Rs I've played so I might just play tourneys online.
good luck everyone!

The issue is youre gonna go on a downswing live too, only that downswing will last much longer cuz youre playing 30 hands/hr. With online you get through the same ds but shorter (ofc its effects are impacted by the fact that you're feeling the brunt of a bunch of beats all within 1 session what would otherwise be like a week or play live). Whichever you prefer, though, GL |

Good luck. But even $20 an hour is quite optimistic. |
