Reintroducing myself. |

Well practically nobody knows me on LP, so I feel the need to reintroduce myself every blog. Those who know me on TL, yeah, it's me.
My name is Mike (DUH) and I'm 17. 18 in 9 days. I have about seven PMs asking why I care how old I am before I start poker, and pretty much my entire extended family has a bad track history in gambling and obv my mom doesn't understand why poker > roulette. In fact, she believes roulette to be more profitable.
Anyway.
So I'm starting on Stars or FTP with $500 so I can play NL25. I have been "studying" poker for about 3 years (lurking, books, etc.), but a little more intensely in the last couple months (actually registering at LP and checking it daily, Harrington on Hold'em). I avoid giving advice on low stakes as I am not a current player. However, I treat every hand posted there as a 'quiz' to see if I would, in the same situation, make the correct play. I seem to be doing quite well, my worry is that I'm not exactly sure how to play super-solid. I've been watching some the low stakes videos that I have access to. I used a friend's account for a bit to play NL10, and I was a winning player there (8bb/100), albeit on a relatively small hand sample (10k hands).
I plan on starting in two weeks, playing 30 hours a week. My goal is to hit NL100 by September (birthday Jul 13).
So my questions are:
1. My mom doesn't want me doing this, but my dad understands and is actually buying 20% of me for 100k hands. However, this means I cannot play at home, so I need to go to my friend's place on weekdays to play.
2. My mom has badgered me about getting a "real job" (I sell knives atm, making as much as a full time job thank you) for 2 months now. What do I tell her? She checks my bank account and reads my mail, so I cannot lie about having another job. It is also absolutely out of the question to tell her the truth. I really hate saying that I can't trust my own mother.
3. 6max or FR? I know this is a personal preference, but my goal for the first few weeks is not to generate a greater bankroll, it is to gain valuable experience and knowledge in poker.
4. PT2 + PAHUD? PT3? Gametime? Is any of this necessary? My friend wants to split with me on PT3 but I'm pretty sure that's not allowed. (I'm what you might call a life nit)
5. Should I screw around with SnGs? What bankroll do I need to play the 180 man 4.40s? Rule of thumb?
6. Finally, I have to admit that I am prone to tilt. Considering my family history, it might as well be in my genes. Is anyone willing to PM me their MSN or something so I don't lose it all? As a precautionary measure, I have offered my stakers an insurance of sorts, refunding everything if I lose money on massive tilt. (Playing outside my br, etc.) Free copy of my newest CD (we sing a cappella, but hey, free stuff) to the first five (if any) NL10+ players who can PM me their MSN.
Anybody who read everything, THANK YOU SO MUCH, I really appreciate it.

Oh shit looks like my goals have changed big time since my last blog entry. It's probably because my job (in sales) makes me feel incredibly confident in whatever the hell I do.
EDIT: spelling. |

I can't really help you with your personal problems but I would recommend you start at FTP or some other sait with decent rakeback (iPoker ftw). Will definitely boost your bankroll big time.
Also, if you tend to tilt, just set a buyin stop loss and stick to it, say 3 or 4 buyins for a single session. That rule should be easier to follow if you are playing from your friend's house and you are not constantly alone, and have atleast someone to talk to or whatever. From my experience I've noticed I play absolutely tilt free when I have someone watching me when I play.
I hope that was of any help. |

ftp is rigged, nobody likes it. pokerstars is pretty nice, you can't beat the software and it's pretty soft at nl10 imo. I'm currently playing nl10 and will be at nl25 relatively shortly so I'll pm you my msn to talk over hands

im going to attempt to try to address everything u need.
starting with family. thats ridiculous. ur 18, and your mom should not be all in ur shit imo. its good she cares about you, however you can do things to stop her from this. if u have a car, open ur own bank account, one which she cannot check. ask her kindly not ot check ur mail. if shes a mature adult she will respect you. if u cannot trust ur mom, yet u live with her, thats a wacked out scenario. sounds to me like you have already addressed the playing issue, and you know better than anyone how ur going to go about it. imo i just bought holdem manager, which all in all its 80 bux. i love it, and its a rly cool program with a lot more stats than PT3 from what i understand. for 4.40s id have @ least 400-500 dollars, or essentially 100BI+. u can go a long time without a big cash in those as ive seen quite a few players who are more than capable of winning them do it. SNGs are great for building a bankroll, however imo ppl once they reach like 1000-1500 should quit SNGs and play cash games. for cash games, if ur going to play to improve definitely play 6m. i think the games are @ 6m will make u a better player in the long run and a lot quicker. tilt is a MAJOR issue, and its something ur going to have to address seriously if ur going to take this seriously. u gotta have the will to shut down ur session and ALL tables the second u feel prone to tilt. even if u dropped say 1 buyin to tilt and shut down, its MUCH better than dropping repeated buyins.
all in all, play cash games and dont tilt.
ps also play fewer tables when trying to learn, and think about every action and why you are making it. it will lead to good habits and understanding the game better. |

Put in a massive amount of hands, this is the best way to learn |

Odds are exactly 50%, either happens or it doesnt | |

stay clear of FTP riggedness... unless you want to practice your tilt control lol. the bonus+rakeback just isnt worth it if its going to cost you your sanity.
Just stick with stars and concentrate on improving your winrate. Theres like a billion fishy tables @ microstake to choose from.
Not sure how much exp you have but I think its a good idea to stick to FR to start with. Just a lot less tricky spots and less variance but definitely switch to 6max after a while to improve.
PT3 is full of bugs and crashes a lot. Id recommend Holdem Manager, its a much more solid product atm and cheaper too.
Im currently playing NL50 FR and NL25 6max and I wouldnt mind going over hands with you or anyone else. Im also looking to get to NL100 by the end of the summer so we re on similar paths.

@shaneomac: Thanks. And thanks again. You deserve it twice. I live by myself 8 months of the year (going into 2nd year uni), and I might move in August anyway. I haven' been able to trust my mom for a long time. The separate bank account sounds good. I've been meaning to switch banks anyway.
@Sheitan: I already plan on at the very least 10k hands a week. When I was playing nl10 on my friend's account I was 12 tabling with not too much effort. I'm going to go with 2 tables to start nl25 and steadily increase it.
@DrawingThin: Check your PMs. |
