i'm going to argentina for a few months starting in july and noticed the difference between the official exchange rate and the "blue dollar" rate is really huge: http://ambito.com/economia/mercados/monedas/dolar/

from what i've been able to find, it seems like the black market exchange is semi-standard and more or less out in the open. but being a tourist with mediocre spanish i'm obviously a little worried about getting scammed.

anyone on LP from argentina or been there recently who has any advice on this stuff? the different rates of exchange are kind of crazy.

thanks

It seems like the same situation as in Venezuela. the official $ to Bsf. exchange rate is 1 to 6.3 and the black market exchange rate is 1 to 27. If you don't know somebody there, maybe you can talk to the clerks at the front desk of the hotel or something. Start exchanging smaller amounts, and put a mark on the bill. That avoids that somebody is going to take your 100$ bill, and swaps it for a counterfeit one and returning it to you claiming it's false. Also here in Venezuela, a lot of Arabs who have small businesses exchange foreign currency for black market prices. Again start exchanging just 100$ or so until you get to know the guy.

i found this link, which seems to be the unofficial exchange rate

there are no facts only interpretations

My parents were just there and changed money via black market... I think the shoe shiner set my dad up lol

Maybe the best way to go about it is asking info at the hotel you stay at...i can ask my parents more info if u really want shoot me a pm if so

Yeah, its pretty standard to go "blackmarket"

Its not really black market, its just some store on the street with a "exchange" display, not some shady basement guarded by armed man

Many (to not say most) will just accept USD aswell. As others pointed out, seems best to just go there with USD and ask at the hotel for a place to change. Thats how I did it last time I was there, it was 2 years ago though.

hey guys, thanks for the responses.

wow cleaner, sounds like venezuela's economy is even nuttier, that is an insane difference o.O i'll def start with smaller amounts. i remember when i was in SE Asia some places were crazy strict about not accepting US bills with any flaws in them. i guess that would be my only concern with marking the bills, otherwise sounds like a great idea. i guess it's probably not an issue there, either way i'll figure that part out.

camila, pm sent

gotunk, i heard some places accept USD but they'll generally only give you the official exchange rate, or something much closer to that than the blue dollar rate.
