Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas LP!

I just recently decided I want to pick up the guitar. I got myself a Yamaha FG700S for a Christmas present (pic attached). Do any of you play, and how did you start? Can you recommend any starting resources or starting pointers? I've played the piano at a state/national competitive level since I was 6, so I'm pretty musically inclined, although I do not have any experience with any other instrument.

Change title of blog entry to "Acoustic guitar! Bro, do you even play?".

I used to play a fair bit but now not much. Started with Nirvana but ended up playing mostly Neil Young (so...yeah). I enjoyed it but never really got heaps into it. I have a Martin acoustic and Yamaha electric. My dad on the other hand has over 20 guitars and I messed around with them a bit. There are so many youtube videos and tab sites around these days it's really easy to find accurate stuff to play. I used my dad as a resource and chord/tab books, also had the guitar for dummies book or whatever it was called as a starter.

Almost a year since I picked up guitar, started with easy songs (Knockin' on heaven's door, Talkin about a Revolution, etc etc ...), all you need to do is be consistent in playing, about 30 mn - 1H per day and most importantly .. ENJOYING IT. Since you're a musician I bet you'll pick up real fast on the rythmic part and since you're a pianist your left hand should start off pretty good on a guitar. An other piece of advice: listen and learn what you like, don't feel like you have to learn this or that....

Odds are exactly 50%: it either happens or not

I used to play, bought my self some cheaper but very nice Fender acoustic
basicly I learned all the chords and just randomly started learning songs etc.. pretty much self-taught
now I made a 6+ months brake... idk why.. but few days ago I decided that I will start playing again , and I also decided to download dvd set and to go through all the begginer things and theory, just so I don't get lost with my progression like I did, as if you just randomly start learning like I did (without any program structure) there is a good chance you will slowdown yourself and folowing a program will probably motivate me to play even more

I also rushed and started learning some more advanced techiques/songs and it definitely lowered amount of enjoyment I was getting from playing/learning as I was obv not on that level at the moment
so yea.. stick with basics until you are 100% sure you have a good base

That's kinda what I was concerned about- making sure I actually did get everything down. I don't want to find out half a year later that my technique is terrible or that i'm playing incorrectly...habits are hard to break, I'd rather learn them right the first time.

< in grad school for classical guitar performance. hit me up if you have questions

for starters, since you seem musically inclined. Id say get to know the fingerboard really well. the 5th fret are your perfect 4ths, and 7th fret is perfect 5ths. The 12th is the octave, use those as references for navigation etc.

Interesting, played piano for 9-10 years and then switched to guitar as well when I no longer had space for a piano. Started with electric guitar though with the basic tabs from deep purple, led zeppelin, metallica, iron maiden etc and teaching myself all the chords. I self thought everything I know on the guitar after spending years on the piano and theory lessons, I'm pretty sure you can do the same after you've built up that piano experience.

Had a guitar teacher for half a year before I moved to the UK and he said that it's very easy for any experienced piano player to get started with guitar. The advantage you have is that your pinky is very evolved to reach higher notes on the piano, and the same goes on the guitar so your reach should be better than any beginner. I would just start with easy tabs from songs you like to get used to the chords, and depending on your style get into some scales (pentatonic is a must know if you want to do improv blues for example). Good luck

Also, I have a subscription on this magazine for about 2 years: http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk...tar-techniques-magazine-subscription/

If you can get a hand on it in the US I would definitely go for it. Every month it's got really good tabs, articles and a CD.
