Proactive life changes
  Cooperstown, Nov 20 2008

When I decided to stop playing ball I cut loose and ate what I wanted and stopped working out because I was completely burnt out after so many years of watching what I ate and working out all the time. So now that I weigh the same as I did when I was in shape, but probably have 20lbs+ less muscle I decided to start running again. I started just over a week ago and I've been running between 2-2.5 miles a day 6 days a week now. I think if I limit my gym time to just running and maybe a real short lift I won't get sick of it. I'm even considering running a marathon next spring if I can get motivated enough to do the training. I recently also decided to give up drinking(yes Brett like really quit this time), it hasn't been fun for awhile now. All my crazy friends that are great to party with live no where near me and it's just an expensive way to feel like shit for a couple days and not remember anything about what happened. Plus it will give me less to apologize for because sometimes I can get pretty out of control well I start hammering down shots.

Anyway that's about all that's new, started playing again really casually now that training is done for work. It's a lot less stress just playing when you feel like it and not trying to log mass hands to get better and move up. So far my sample has been very small, but my play has been far less spewy then in the past because there's no ego involved. Seems like I've finally seperated that from cards so who knows maybe I'll actually have a nice supplemental income at some point.

Wow congrats Scott
  Cooperstown, Aug 01 2008

So a friend of mine I played with last year made it his first big league start on Tuesday. So congrats to Scott on that amazing accomplishment. He ended up getting the loss for the Bluejays, but still had a decent performance all things considered.

Sweeeeeet
  Cooperstown, Jul 10 2008

Just found out I got the job, start on July 28th, the best part my benefits starts August 1st already so high-five for health insurance. As far as poker goes, been pretty stagnant for a month now, can't really seem to get much going but I haven't really been playing much either. Seems like I'm losing most big pots in cooler situation 2 pair vs a set, set under set etc. I'm sure there's some spew cutting into what little profit I should be making but oh well it's not a focus at the moment. Now I gotta get ready to move and start getting my body back on a normal sleep schedule.

Pretty blah week, running fairly bad spewing my fair share once I'm tilted. On the upside I've been stopping without doing any real damage to my bankroll which is always good. At the moment it seems no matter what my play is it has been wrong. Get it in top 2 guy runs out his draw, get it in with an over pair villian hit a set. Just variance but that doesn't make it any better, just understandable. Gonna keep at it and see where I can be by years end. On the upside I should be hearing back about that job sometime early this week and hopefully I will be getting a second interview. Guess only time will tell.

Well this last week overall has been going pretty well. I've been playing mostly cashgames and while I have had the occasional 2-3 buyin downswing overall it has went well. Tonight got saved by some drunk retard who was playing so so so horrendously bad. I think I took 3-4 buyins off in 20 hands it was great. Earlier in the day I didn't fair so well running quads into bigger quads, but hey thats poker.

As for real life stuff I had my interview today for the underwriter job and it went pretty well, apparently there was something like 200 people that applied for 5 openings. I'm feeling pretty good about it though the interviewer said they only called 35 people back and they were going to finish the first round of interviews this week and be making call backs for 2nd interviews starting the week after. I figure with all the strings that got pulled for me I should be in good shape and it sounds like an excellent opportunity. The department I'd be entering requires that you know pretty much everything there is to know about insurance so I'd have to take 5-6 tests and go through 8 weeks of training before I even started my actual job. At that point it'd be baby steps with a mentors help for the first two years. From there it would be pretty much free reign. Other perks 20% of the companies workforce is retiring in the next 5 years which means tons of opportunity for advancement, and since I would be trained in all aspects I can go anywhere in the company. Other perks they have further paid training/testing for everyone and the graduation is held at a random place each year. Every 10 years they have it in Hawaii so there's another huge perk. On top of that they have there own restaurant, cafeteria, theater, golf course, and full gym which are all complemtary(with golf as the exception) to employees. Overall it looks like an amazing opportunity and I'm really hoping that it works out.

Been playing a ton of SNG's and they are going real well. I also won a $215 ticket in a 5400 satelite which was a real nice bankroll boast. Lately I've been play 25nl 6 max, mostly short sessions either until I dont feel like playing anymore or until I feel like I'm not playing my best. Seems to be working out well, haven't tilted at all and I've been sticking to limits I'm rolled for which is a nice change of piece. I also got an interview set up for next Monday so hopefully I'll be getting a job as an underwriter real soon. The pay is decent at first but scales fast once you get deeper into the field and the benefits are absolutely amazing.

So my goal is to play low buy in sng's to build a roll and MTT's as well trying to get a big score. So far the MTT's haven't come through. I made 3 final tables, but nothing higher then a 5th place finish. This last week I managed to play 225 $5.50 and $11 sng's for a solid $215 profit and a ROI of 12%. The downside I ran really really well a day or two at the $5.50's cashing in 75%, but I've ran horrendously at the $11 overall I'm down $6 at them so far. Probably some bad ICM in there forsure, anyway I did manage to get silverstar in the last week of the month so I can cut back on mass playing if I want and continue to play casually as initially planned. I have almost 5400fpp's now an I am wondering if it's worth playing the 10man sunday satelite where 4 seats are award. Basically I can take a 40% shot at winning $215 for 5400 fpp's or use 5000 fpp's for the $50 silver star vip reward. I'm curious how soft are these satelites, going strictly by the number the satelite seem like the obvious choice but I have no idea what the fields are like in them.

Now to the rea life stuff. No word on the job yet, but I do plan on calling them this week, I also looked up some apartments online and assuming the neighborhood is good and the place is as nice as it looked in the pictures I think I found my place. If not my brother lives in town so I can just crash his place til I find something nice. Good luck at the tables, LP FTW at the WSOP this year. I'll probably update again next week with hopefully a much higher win rate at the $11 sng's and a big tourney score.

That's life, a new beginning.
  Cooperstown, May 28 2008

Not much new, had my midlife crisis at 25, nothing quite like coming to the conclusion that something you've spent 21 year pursuing just isn't going to work out because you just got genetically fucked. Aw well that's life I guess. That being said I officially retired a couple weeks ago, what a fun decision that was. With a much clearly head I've decided to start playing again, nothing serious just a few sng's when I feel like playing. I need some kind of competitive outlet and poker always was good for that.

I'm also starting to get my life in order, I recently sent in my resume for an underwriter position at an insurance company, if I don't get it somethings completely wrong. My references will utterly destroy pretty much anyone else who applies, on top of that a VP is personally giving my resume to HR so I have high expectation there. Hopefully I'll be hearing from them soon and I can finally get started on a somewhat more stable lifestyle.

"i don't remember anything from last night. all i know is, is that i woke up naked on my couch, with a piece of uncooked chicken on the stove."
- josh mcleod, an ex teamate of mine

That's why I'm gonna miss it so much, well that and playing in front of 3-5 thousand people most nights. But hey atleast I won't be moving 20+ times in 5 years ever again hopefully. Here's to new beginnings!
