High standard deviation is more variance but having a lower bb/100 doesn't increase your variance. If you have a high bb/100 over X amount of hands then a higher percentage of the time you'll be positive than with a lower bb/100 over the same X amount of hands with the same SD. Rush games may have a higher SD because of how differently you or the other players play. I would think if you're playing more hands though your SD could possibly be lower by metric of hourly even if it's higher when measured by hands.

90% of the time the word variance in the poker world equates to 'shit mang how many hands could I not make any money and I cant pay the rent/wtf I should be winning why have I lost half my bankroll, maybe im terrible at this game/time to move down stakes sadface'. The chance of your experience being like this ^ increases if you have less edge, as you said .

Edit: Basically proper statistical variance is a thing that can work in your favour. You win far more than expected because of insane rungood over the period of a month. 'Variance' in normal poker vocabulary is only really talked about as being the negative side of variance, and thus obviously just not expecting to win as much on average makes losing more likely and larger losses start to come into the realm of possibility.

Avoiding 'variance' is 99% winrate+volume. SD doesnt really come into it much.

Its because when we say "variance" we mean the overall swinginess of our graphs, not really the deviations from the mean since we really dont take the mean into consideration much
