Story time LP

Lets hear your stories of when you popped your gamblers cherry.

Doesnt apply strictly to poker.

Ill go first.

Went out with the family for a pub lunch when i was a young lad probably about 10. There was a lone fruit-machine in the bar, its flashing lights and prospect of money had caught my attention as we entered.

We ordered our food and were waiting, conversation was flowing among the adults. I begged my mum for some money to go play on that bad boy

"No" she said "No one ever wins on those machines"

I persisted until eventually she gave in and gave me like 40p. I trotted off to the bar with my new bankroll in hand, ready to take on the world and crush the machines with my super-skilled video gamer brain. I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time.

I strolled up to the machine and triumphantly pumped in my wager. I had no idea how to play, no knowledge of features or anything and just assumed that BAR BAR BAR meant u won the jackpot along with the small payout chart displayed on the side of the machine.

I spin a couple of times (I don't think i had more than 2 spins worth of money) and i managed to win about £3.50

I hammer the cashout button and fuckin swagger back into the dining room like the Maverick i was and roll up my mum to show her how I was the sickest gambler ever, and how wrong she was.

I returned to the machine, ready to put in my £3 bankroll and win infinite riches, when the bar girl told me I wasn't allowed to play because i wasn't 18. This seemed like a great injustice, I was forced to return to the dining room, but could hardly enjoy my meal knowing Id just been cheated out of a fruit-machine hyper-payout because i was 8 years underage.

Put 300$ on red, lost. Then another 300$ on redlost. Fuck this shit one more time 300 on red won. Loaned a roulette player 500$, he end up stealing another 1500 from me while I'm black out drunk and never paying back 500$ loan either.

lol @ gambling on pogs

in year 7 (aged 12) our maths class learnt mini-bridge (stripped down version of bridge) and we got to play in class. One of the maths teachers in our year was a pretty big deal on the UK bridge circuit, so he taught us. 2nd week me and my friends has a mini-bridge cash game going in class - it got shut down pretty quick.

I always played card games and stuff but never for money and never a poker variety until my last year in high school. I went on a science trip with ap students to check out different universities and their facilities. The trip obviously was nerdy but ended up being fun when one of the kids wanted to play poker. I had never played and didn't want to lose any money but he said that all I needed was $3-5 in change and it wasn't that big a deal cause we would play 5cent blinds. Anyways, we played 3handed Hi/Lo omaha and i somehow won $11 in an hour or two, all their change and they both quit me complaining I hustled them. I did not play poker again for another year.

I have learned from poker that being at the table is not a grind, the grind is living and poker is how I pass the time

Dad brought me to Turkey when I was 11, that's 18 years ago or so. I remember he was looking to buy all kinds of leather stuff, suit cases, valets so forth. And he was haggling with prices and stuff, I wasn't really paying attention, but I remembered the conversation. Anyway, we go through the basars, and just as we're to leave, I notice something, I see this crocodile thing sale, from a small bode, my dad is out of vision, I yell, 2 sec, I run over, and I buy what I heard he had been asking for earlier, then I hid it. (Saw it as a big gamble, because it cos fuckloads, like, 20 icecreams or so.)

Later when evening came, he started drinking. (He does that in the weekends and on holliday.) And I told him I have a surprise for him, told him I rescued a little girl at the beach, and her dad gave me this!!

And I showed him the valet, his eyes lit up, he got eager and wanted ti buy it, I sold it, for around x5 profit. In the morning, I took it back, and he had no idea. Then I sold it again like 5 times that holliday, made a huge profit.

Not sure if it's gambling, but kinda felt like at the time.

When i was around 10 i play a some kind of slot machine with my younger brother. It was a the boat from Sweden to Finland. It wasnt a normal slot machine, you placed a 5 MK (which was the currency before € in finland) in a little hole on the side of the machine. Then you hit a bottom next to hit, the harder you hit, the faster the coin flew. Like a pinballmachine.

There were like 5 "baskets" you chould hit w/ ur coin. 10 20 25 50 and bonus. The first time we play me and my brother won around 100 MK. We were sure we could be millionaires by playing that machine. The year after we won like 100 MK more on the same machine but now we had a hard time finding it. And i still think something was wrong w/ it because it paid out so good, and they only had it for 2 years.

Good times...

Is there any country that didnt have pogs? jesus christ that guy who invented that must be filthy rich. Anyways I always used to gamble on football games, sort of a lottery, so I was like 11 or some shit and me and a couple of friends decided we are gonna win bigtime so we pooled all our money together to get more options and failed horribly and got 1 game short of even making a little bit back, and from that day on I proceeded to run terribly in that form of gambling, always coming close to winning but not quite :/

7 years old, you know those coloured papers that you make origami with? You would carry those in massive stacks.
It's kind of hard to explain how the game goes, but I'll try to be as visual as possible.

Basically, those stacks of small coloured square papers are your chips.
You bet an amount, and your opponent must match it (or approximately match the size). It is a heads-up only game.
The combined stacks of papers are now a pot. They're stacked up high in a single row.
The pot goes to the middle, and the goal is to flip them so it shows their white side. You get to keep all that is flipped.

You are to flip it by various techniques but you are never directly flipping them over, that is cheating.
But instead, you are using two or one hand to create this oval shape and hit the top of the stack to flip it.
The trick is to make it as air tight as possible.
I am not sure of the exact science behind it, but if you have a good form with your hand, upon practising on a marble ground it will make a very hollow sound.

I may draw a diagram later when I get home to illustrate it.
So you rock paper scissors to see who goes first and takes turns when the other guy fails.
But among the gosu (the hell's the plural for this), stack size rarely matters as it will always be a single shot blow unless they mess up.
It is a game of true skill and endurance as these matches can last many many hours until you break the other guy of these precious origami papers.

first gambling experience i had is when i would go to the arcade with my dad on weekends and wed play bet games vs people on the 4 player f1 racing machines that sega made. then we'd go to the bar to play pool (id watch him shark people) and craps on one of those video machines they put at the bar (this is like 92-93ish btw). THEN we'd go home and play 5card draw and 7card stud. he also showed me this sick variant of 7stud called 7stud roll your own, all the way, hi/lo, low card in the hole wild(paul's game for short). you also had to declare whether you were going hi or low or both ways at showdown by holding out 1, 2, or 3 chips. it was a sick variant that i bust out to this day if we are playing dealers choice. needless to say i learned the ways of the gambool very early on. its prolly why ive stuck to playing live so much.

first ever gamble was in a cafe eating lunch and i bet paying for lunch that i could throw a crumpled up paper napkin into an espresso cup 4 tables away while sitting down. I have horrible eye sight and never use glasses, plus my aim isn't famous, so i got snap called, threw it and won Best Lunch EVER.

started playing for marbles when I was really young, it's pretty big here on elementary schools. after winning a lot I wouldn't know what to do with them so I'd just sell them again. after that came flippos (the same things sam just posted) with which you could play tons of games as well. I played anything that was popular basically as long as you'd be able to win. in high school I was making my first sport bets though very small and on rare occasion. the common form was parlays which I now know is a complete ripoff. still managed to hit some and be up from it though.

I begged my dad to put £5 on Brazil to win USA 94
I woulda been 9 at the time. I think it paid something dumb like 3:1
They won the final on penalties when Baggio hammered it over the bar.
My dad had secretly put £10 on for me instead, I was rich.

my dad once wanted to teach me that gambling is bad, so he told me he could give me my allowance 5$ or whatever for that week or i could try to double it with dice. I ran it up to something like 50$ and never played again, he was pissed lol

a much better story

I was walking around in new york and i saw a circle crowded around some dudes. They were playing chess. One was a black dude, he obv was trying to make monies... the two boards in front of him and such were his. There were 2 , 10$ bills next of the board that was being played on and he was crushing some weak fatty business man. As i was watching I was amazed by how bad they both were playing. The black guy had the game clinched bc the fatty was so terribad but he was making very non optimal plays. I was in love with chess when i was a kid.

I thought to myself, well, looks like u don't need to be that good to make a few bucks on the street off chess. I put my 10$ down and we started playing. After a few moves it became very apparent that he had totally hustled me. He had played bad without giving up the game to draw in spectators. Was actually cool to be hustled like that :D

Eh I use to buy/re-sell pokemon cards back in the day. If you wanted a card, I was the man to get it for you. xD
Also played pogs - FOR KEEPS NIGGAZ
In high school I use to degen it up by doing 50$ coin flips (lol I wouldn't even flip for 10 bucks now... such a nit :[ )

I also would play Poker in Class with a few kids, ended up about a hundred before the quarter was up. We modded it though, we'd deal cards and keep them out of the teachers view, then we'd bet a number (usually started with 5000 points for 20 bucks) so bet could be any random number, after that we'd scratch off the old score and replace it with the new score. Was really ghetto but I was a huge luckbox back then.
