Trying to get wireless internet on my desktop using netgear wn111v2 network adapter
the cd i have from it wont install the software properly, gets to near the end of install and something about windows visual c+++ 2005 comes up and it says unable to install please try at another time.
However it still allows me to search for wireless internet clicking the button next to the clock in bottom right of screen. My network comes up fine and is usually 3/4 bars out of 5, i click to join the network and enter my password, occasionally it will let me join for 30 seconds then disconnect and other times it will not let me join at all, when it rarely connects for the 30 seconds the internet speed is slow. I have 50mb internet with virgin media and a netgear wireless router which i know works fine because i am able to use the laptop anywhere around the house with no problem.
I am using the network adapter on my desktop and really need it to work so i can get on with some poker. I wasnt sure if the issue is because i couldnt install the software for the network adapter and i dont know if its inteference(theres an immersion heater in the way). If there is inteference would 3/4 bars out of 5 always come up when searching for networks? My pc is a dell i bought about fortnight ago and runs on windows vista.
I really need this sorted, whoever helps me out will get $50 and 5% of any winnings i have in august. Please help me!

Does the installer give you any error code when it refuses to work?
Do you have UAC off? I'm not really an expert but have noticed that many problems in vista seem to be fixed by turning this off, also make sure you're running the installer in adminstrator mode.
If it still doesn't work you might want to try installing the drivers from another source (http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7528) until someone comes up with an answer. |

+ Show Spoiler +
All editions of Windows Vista include a configuration option in the "User Accounts" control panel that may be used to enable or disable User Account Control.
Additional security settings are available by configuring Group Policy settings, though this is only available for the Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. All configuration items are prefixed with “User Account Control”.
* 'Behaviour of the elevation prompt for administrators in admin approval mode'. Can be set to:
o 'Turn off UAC' (no prompt).
o 'Prompt for consent' (default).
o 'Prompt for credentials'.
* 'Behaviour of the elevation prompt for standard users'. This setting determines what happens if you run as a standard user and start a program that needs administrator rights (for the cases UAC can determine admin rights are required e.g. does not work for MMC snapins). Can be set to:
o 'No prompt: fail and do not start the program if it required admin rights'.
o 'Prompt for credentials' (default).
* 'Admin approval mode for the built-in administrator account'. This setting can be used to disable UAC for the built-in Administrator account. Can be set to 'Enable' or 'Disable'. The built-in administrator account is disabled by default in Windows Vista. The default value of this setting depends on the configuration and on how the system was installed - see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756883.aspx for discussion.
* 'Detect application installations and prompt for elevation'. Windows by default uses some heuristics to determine if an EXE is an installer (which most likely requires elevation). Can be set to 'Enable' (the default) or 'Disable'.
* 'Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation'. Fades the desktop when the elevation prompt appears. Can be set to 'Enable' (the default) or 'Disable'.
* 'Only execute executables that are signed and validated'. If enabled an additional check is done after the elevation prompt. If the EXE is not signed the EXE will not be started. Can be set to 'Enable' or 'Disable' (the default).
* 'Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations'. Can be set to 'Enable' (the default) or 'Disable'.
* 'Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode'. To switch off UAC set this setting to disabled and reboot. All UAC behavior will be disabled, including file and registry virtualization. Can be set to 'Enable' (the default) or 'Disable'.
An alternate method to configure UAC and switch it off:
* Create a new text file in notepad
* enter the following:
C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe /k %windir%System32reg.exe ADD HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
pause
* Save the text file as
o Save as type: All Files
o Name: UAC_Off.bat
* Right click on the new file and run as administrator
* Restart.
To switch UAC back on using this method, repeat the above steps, but save the file as UAC_On.bat and enter the following instead:
C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe /k %windir%System32reg.exe ADD HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
pause

or http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm
Downloading and running this .reg file should be easier:
http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/DisableUACforAdministrators.zip
Also might be worth it to try turning off your firewall and things like that if you already haven't, you never know. '
If nobody here has an answer for you (assuming these "tricks" don't work.) you could try asking at the official netgear support forums (http://forum1.netgear.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23), the forum seems fairly active so it shouldn't take too long to get an answer.

Hm, have you tried using different channels for your wireless network? I guess it shouldn't be a problem though if you can get the other computer to work.
Is this the way you connect to your netgear router or does the drivers give you another way or something~?
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/95/session/L2F2LzEvc2lkL01JQnNBVERq
I assume you have tried to connect to the internet from different places in your house as well? To make sure there is nothing "in the way".
Oh right its a desktop, might be a bit hard to move, can you move the router?

Seems like you have pending updates, see the red icon at your taskbar (to the right), click on it and see if its erroring about any updates not being installed, it probably says you'll have to download the updates or restart your pc.
If it doesn't say that then just try updating your windows manually if you can.
If your windows vista is 64 bit btw. you need different drivers for the wn111v2.
The more I "investigate" this thing the more it starts to feel like the actual installer error isn't what causes this, but rather the connection just isn't stable because of interference or eh something.
What is the router model?
What happens if you try to install the software in "compatibility" mode, I think you do this by right clicking the icon and its there somewhere. |

Okay well Vista can have some problems with that exact model, follow the steps (Scroll down to "resolution" ) on how disable the DHCP broadcast that might be the cause of the problem, then try to connect to your wireless network once again.

Oh wow I had to rewrite that like ten times for it to make any sense lol, anyway I hope this does something haha! |

you need to disable it on the receiving computer.'
For the subkey:
go to H something local machine/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/NetworkCards |

HKey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/NetworkCards
There you should see a folder under it and when you click it you'll see something like "Servicename: numbers(guid)andletters", thats the GUID you're looking for, if you have multiple possible number combinations there then just see which one is one of the four.
I'm Ygkjh @ Stars, thats 12.5 buy-ins for me so I appreciate it very much. =) |

Possible yeah, and the computer as well. (register edits don't come in to effect before restarting the computer.
I'm pretty much out of ideas right now but I'll think about it and will come back if something pop up in my mind.
You could try simple things like switch the usb slot the network receiver is in and moving it around but other than that I'm a bit lost.
Can I ask you btw. why are you using wireless for a desktop? I thought just getting yourself a stnd network card and cable would be much cheaper and efficient. I've always myself avoided anything wireless because I tend to always face problems with them. |

excuse my ignorance but whats the difference between a standard network card and a network adapter? my laptop works fine on the wirless network, i dont understand why my wireless network adapter wont work on my desktop, it is recommednded for use with the wireless router and its a new pc with no viruses or anything, think my only option is to get a long ethernet cable and use that. |

I might be mistaken, your network adapter is a stick you put in to your USB right? this is what google leads me to believe when I google with the model name.
A standard network card I mean is just a card you put inside your computer and connect the ethernet cable in to, I'm not an expert myself either so its possible you have more knowledge in this field.
And wireless networks tend to have problems with vista because of DHCP and it seems to have problems with other things as well, if you're willing to do "extreme" changes you could try installing Windows XP on a different partition and see if the network works better on that one. |

i rang netgear they said it wasnt their problem it was something wrong with the pc so i would have to ring dell, which i did and after 20 minutes they said they would charge me 57 pound for a call out or 99 pound for 6 months software warranty because i involved a third party might as well get a long ethernet cable.
