Hi all !
Here is the issue : I have an Asus rog laptop. With one hdmi and a vga port.
I want to connect two Samsung 4k 28" Monitors. I use one as my main monitor for a while on the hdmi port. No problem
I bought another one that i wanted to connect to the vga port.
Those 28" screen dont have a vga port so i bought a vga to hdmi cable and plugged it to the laptop. Nothing works, can't make it happen.
Am i doing something wrong ? They also have a dpi port. Can i use those with my laptop ?
Cheers !

No such thing as VGA to HDMI. You can only do HDMI to VGA. You can downscale, but you cant upscale, not with a simple adapter anyway (they do make converter boxes that can handle this, but they are probably like $100+)

If you have HDMI + DVI or DP (not sure what you meant by DPI) you can probably run 2 monitors since that would be 2 digital outputs. Many laptop video cards cant run more than 2 displays though so you may have to run with the laptop display off.

You might also want to consider looking at a docking station. This way you can have your laptop tucked away to the side with all of your controls and displays plugged into the docking station, looks like a regular PC setup, less clutter. Only downside is most laptops dont have true docking ports, so they just pipe everything through a single USB port, which is pretty bad for handling multi-monitor displays (especially 4k displays), at least for gaming. If you just play poker, watch netflix and surf the web you'd probably be ok

It would depend on how powerful your laptop's graphics capabilities are whether or not it can handle two external 4k displays. I know even the most decked out macbook pros won't handle two 4k monitors at full resolution and refresh rate. You will likely have to sacrifice either refresh rate or resolution if it will even work at all.

Just an FYI, that's DisplayPort on a non-mac. Thunderbolt is specifically an Apple standard that does a bit more than just displays.

Just to add, alot of laptops circulate air through the surface where the keyboard is via vents etc. Therefore if you do have your laptop closed and running all the time, you are likely to run into overheating issues.

Also, reason you cannot convert vga to hdmi through a simple adapter, is because vga is an analog signal and hdmi is a digital signal. You can buy boxes that convert, but most downscale as has been said. You have to buy a device with an active components that will convert analog to digital etc.

But as you have found your displayport you can just buy a displayport to HDMI cable. However its very likely you wont be able to use HDMI and display port at the same time.. unless your laptop is seriously pimped out..

One other option is using something like this; http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/digital_se/

I am a degen. Do not believe in any of my advice.Last edit: 10/05/2016 20:32

No its all good i have connected both of them one on hdmi on on display port and its running like a charm, it is a strong laptop, asus rog something can't remember which one. Fans are behind so no overheating issues its not through the keyboard but cheers.
