The Swedish player becomes the newest EPT champion after topping a record-breaking field of 1,988 entries in Barcelona: Simon Brandstrom conquered the biggest European Poker Tour (EPT) Main Event in history, outlasting the 1,988-player field in Barcelona. Brandstrom took home €1,290,166 following a heads-up deal with Marton Czuczor who locked up €1,253,234.

Brandstrom, 37, became Sweden’s 11th champion and first since Robin Ylitalo at 2013 EPT London.

“It’s nice to win the title. It’s a classic stop,” Brandstrom said.

Final table results:
1st - Simon Brandstrom, Sweden - €1,290,166
2nd - Marton Czuczor, Hungary - €1,253,234
3rd - Rui Sousa, Portugal - €607,400
4th - Diego Falcone, Brazil - €436,760
5th - Giovani Torre, Portugal - €364,660
6th - Yunye Lu, China - €295,520
7th - Johan Storakers, Sweden - €226,490
8th - Pasquale Braco, Italy - €159,580

Brandstrom and Czuczor held the two biggest stacks on the six-handed final table, and they demonstrated their dominance straight from the start. A rapid sequence led to three eliminations provided by Czuczor and one by Brandstrom within the first hour of play.

That paved the way for heads-up deal talks, which quickly resulted in an agreement that saw both players secure more than €1.2 million each.

Czuczor, who had already finished second at EPT Prague, pulled significantly ahead. He gained nearly a 4-to-1 lead early into the duel, but Brandstrom was able to recover.

Brandstrom then turned the match on its head thanks to an inevitable clash which saw both players hit a full house. Brandstrom was on the bright side of the setup, scoring a full double to seize the lead. That hand change the script, and Brandstrom was able to close things out in the following hour.

“That was a crucial pot for me, for sure,” Brandstrom said.

The champion shared a room with his friends Alexander Ivarsson and Anton Siden here in Barcelona. Ivarsson came close to making the final table himself, finishing in 10th place.

Czuczor is the fifth player with two runner-up finishes, joining Denes Kalo, Martin Jacobson, Tony Gregg, Max Heinzelmann, and Pierre Neuville.

The final table featured two Portuguese players (just as in 2018): PokerStars qualifier Rui Sousa who finished in third place for €607,400 and Giovani Torre who claimed €364,600 for fifth. Brazilian player Diego Falcone squeezed between them, departing in fourth for €436,760.

Yunye Lu from China spent only one hand on the final table, walking away with the €295,520 sixth-place prize. The official final table also included Johan Storakers (7th for €226,940) and Pasquale Braco (8th for €159,580); they were eliminated on the previous day.

The record-breaking EPT Barcelona Main Event field created a €9,641,800 prize pool. The top 296 runners reached the paid places.
