when I decided to quit I thought it would make my life easier in some ways and harder in others.
-easier cause I wasn't gonna have problems telling people what I spend my time on anymore
-easier cause now I was gonna have more time for my girlfriend and friends
-easier cause I was gonna have a healthier life

-harder cause I love the game
-harder cause spending so much time in front of a computer has been my routine since, EVER?
-harder cause I was gonna miss the money, the thrill of winning, the motivation to get better and better at something I was actually finding some sucess
-harder cause my mind would have to accept that I LOST A LOT of time of my life with something I wasn't going to do anymore

I was wrong

I don't miss anything and I feel like I'm improving a lot more as a human being than I was before, and for me that's worth a ton. My days are very productive now. I mean, I really DO STUFF! I feel challenged again. It's not easy to study, work to pay my bills, go to the gym, see my girl, see my friends, sleep, etc. I'm feeling like a POKEMON! Battling everyday to evolve. lol

I have so much in my mind now. I have a project to start a business with a friend of mine in about 6 months from now, I'm looking foward to finish my degree (2 years left), I'm planning to travel with my girl and we are helping each other a lot more.

I'm going to business school but I'm also studying computer science on the side (I went to CS school for 1 year and a half), not really graduating, just studying by myself and learning more about what has always been my passion. ATM I'm focusing on learning more JAVA and PHP, it has something to do with the business I'm gonna start but I tell you guys more about it when I actually do it. So many plans on my head for the future that I don't even want to sleep, I just want to spend time producing. I'm sleeping like 5hours/day except weekends but its totally worth.

Life's good!

edit: sorry for the english mistakes. I'm not used to write big texts in english. I did my best =P

Totally agree with this, this is the hardest thing to think about and is very depressing if you spent a lot of time on poker and never really made it to mid/high stakes. I'm glad quitting worked out for you, most likely for the better.

Have you put in any hands since quitting?

good for you. i'm starting school up in sept, and can't wait to get outta the grind. 95%+ of lpers are probably people who think they make more money than they actually do.. and the 5% are the ones that everyone is trying very hard to be.

i call it the 'neilly-effect'.

when legislation passed in 2006 and i THOUGHT poker was unplayable from a legal standpoint, my life gained a lot of substance. i was in my freshman year of college and did a lot of stuff, then i realized wtf its still legal and went back to the grind

i dont regret it though, because i remember how much more fulfilling my poker life has been, allowing me to travel all over the world, meet some great people, and allow me a lot of freedom and options in my life.

freedom is not for everyone. they can use it to give much more substance and variety to their life but they can also use it to shelter themselves

for poker playing specifically, i've traveled to macau many times, taiwan for extended periods of time, the philippines, vegas a bunch but that's kinda obvious haha

i take a lot of trips elsewhere though, japan, many european countries, etc. im going to appt sydney later this year as well. not bad for a random 21 y/o american imo

i'm with yomer lol

you can't quit poker and hang around and lurk on poker forum sites, it's like being around junkies all the time when you try to stop doing drugs. only way to quit poker is cold turkey and say goodbye to the whole scene.
