Long story short; took a shot at 5/5 PLO. Local whale sat to my left and wanted to make it a 5/5/10/25 double straddle game, I refused because I'm shortrolled so he made it his mission to try and break me. He did. Was in for 500 and ran it up to 4k, get it allin preflop with him for 9k pot with AAK3ss, he wins with T857r and ended my poker career. Havent played in 3 weeks. Got a job starting next week making minimum wage so back to the motel life for me. Put 200 on ClubWPT just to go back to my NLHE blueprint from years ago and was doing pretty well at 10/20/40cent, until I got stacked on all 4 tables at the same time holding KK/KK/QQ/55. 3 opponents had AA and I got set over set on 2 of them. Cant even get mad, best hands won. Even though these are just $40 buyin tables I snapped like all those years ago and trashed my monitor, nightstand and glass drinking bottle. Complete loss of control just watching myself go into sitout mode all over the screen. It didnt even break me, I still have 300 online. I'm such a fucking loser I know. Anyway I should be moving out of this apartment by the end of the week unless I get a job waiting tables. Someone told me thats surprisingly well paying work, never done it before though.
And the truly sick thing is this is precisely one of the reasons I started heavily gravitating towards PLO. I just dont tilt at the game, like at all. I dont know if it's because im just new to the game and dont understand variance & equities so I brush off the outcomes, or if I just respect the variance and recognize I cant get mad because it's just the nature of the game. Big hands are rare in NLHE so it just feels so crushing when you finally get one and lose anyway, whereas in PLO it feels like every orbit you pick up something nutworthy. I also notice I get sweaty and super stressed playing NLHE to the point I can only play 3 hours or so whereas PLO I can easily play 6-8. I cant even play NLHE more than 400BB deep without getting panicky but in PLO I have no winstop at all which I'm sure is how you should be approaching both games. Psychologically PLO seems to be healthier for me, if I only I knew the strat.
I ended my NLHE career at 2/5 with a $40/hr winrate over a 146 hour sample this season.

All due respect, you're lying to yourself about not tilting and all that. I'm saying this to you not as a judgement but as a call for you to stop gambling. It's ruining your life. A job in a restaurant can be a good thing, in that you'll generally eat well, it's great for social life, and it can be flexible (leave and come back if you don't burn bridges).
Probably try to sharpen your skills from non gambling career and if those are minimal, go to a community college and find something you like.
Don't go for the fast or easy money gambling as it leads to a vicious cycle for you.
Be totally honest with yourself. Ask the world/universe/God/your conscience what you need to do, be totally honest and sit quietly. The answer for what you need to do will come and it's probably one you don't want or like or will be easy. You'll know it to be true, though. That's what you should start to pursue.
Sincerely, good luck. I hope I never see a post from you about playing poker or gambling again. I do hope to see you post about your wins that will come in life, though. |

Yeah I know, I've never been a legitimate winning player from the day I started. I'm just delusional and keep thinking that I'm right about to crest the hill with some new concept that will plug the last leak and turn me into a legitimate winning pro rather than just a fish on a temporary heater. |

plo is the worst man
in my entire life I have probably taken shots at a higher-than-i-should limit in PLO and it literally NEVER works out. Like in my entire career I must be 0 for 20 at shots at high stakes PLO. Oh, I flop the nuts, this is the one. Oh, doesn't hold. Okay now I have biggest combo draw ever. Oh, doesn't get there. Again. Okay guess I'll go rebuild at holdem. |

Wanna say your skill or ability to win and your life/poker management are two different things skill wise you may be a winning player, not fish on heater, but bad management that puts you back in these spots.
If a solid winning player there is no reason to rush and out your life at risk, just sit and print the $40-50 an hour you said you won until you have expenses for Andre months saved and a roll that can handle variance.
I think after this long playing, it's clear that's not part of you that's gonna change.
Take care of yourself. |

You didn't "take a shot". Taking a shot implies bankroll management skills. You emptied the whole clip. And then the bear came and ate you. It's on you, and if you haven't figured out the basic rules of BR management at this point, you should recognize that you have no good reason to sit at a table again. |

That sucks. Maybe this could be a blessing in disguise to try to focus on something else but poker.
I would suggest looking into data science / analytics if you enjoyed the mathematics side of poker, and see what free courses there are out there. You can get by without knowing SQL/Python now a days thanks to AI, but I would still suggest to take those courses to give you a foundation.
Coursera, Udemy and Codeacadamy are all pretty ok websites to get started.
Not sure how old you are, but best of luck to you. |
