March Is Getting Better! by Rush, March 05

So after starting out -10 buy-ins in 1 session in the beginning of the month, I've made back more than half. Which is good. And I'm playing a lot better and improving I think.

Heres my session from tonight -

Biggest Day EVAR!! by k2o4, March 04

Holy Heater! 11 Bi day... haven't had one of these in FOREVER. I think things are evening out from the horrible below EV shit I suffered in Feb. The lines have nearly re-converged and I'm only $600 below EV rather than $2,000. Winning flips and having hands hold up makes a huge difference!

Today:
http://premium1.uploadit.org/IAElitesquad//General-3-4-09-All-1day.jpg

http://premium1.uploadit.org/IAElitesquad//Graph-3-4-09-All-Dollars-1day.jpg

I made up for my Sunday night spewfest earlier today and then sat down for a post dinner session and it was clear from the get go that I was on a heater. Pretty awesome to keep seeing good hands dealt and clean flops when you get it all-in. Also made some good plays and got guys to bluff 3 streets into me or payoff with crap hands like Q7s. I did make a few small mistakes and I am about to go review all my hands to find them, but overall I played really well. Much easier to play well when on a heater though!

I'm at a new BR high of $9,400. That won't last long though, for two reasons... 1) I'm on a heater and heaters are always followed by painful downswings to even out the variance, and 2) I have to make a payment to my coach when I hit $9.6k so that will take a bite outta the old BR. But overall I should be sitting above 40 BI for NL200 which is where I like to be. I need me a good cushion.

Anyway here's the full month so far:

March:

http://premium1.uploadit.org/IAElitesquad//Graph-3-4-09-All-Dollars-Feb.jpg

It's funny cause I'm more in shock and fear than excitment and joy. Shock at actually winning and the amount won, fear cause I know it's all very temporary and I'm not excited about the part where I lose it all. Overall I do think my play has become much better and that's having a huge effect on these results. Obviously the heater is affecting things, but I'm talking about my overall NL200 shot so far. A year ago when I tried NL200 I wasn't even close to ready, I had so much left to learn. When I started trying it again in November I was at the point where I could beat it but not crush it, and since I ran bad while taking shots I wasn't getting anywhere. Then since January I've had a lot of breakthroughs with my game and have been capable of crushing NL200 but just ran bad everytime I took a shot. Finally the variance has been on my side and my skill has made up for times when it isn't.

It's been a very long poker journey for me. Feels crazy to actually be playing NL200 and feeling confident about what I'm doing. I've spent so much time thinking about being at this point and to actually be living it is awesome =) I love being at a limit where a good day feels like a shitload of money. NL100 was kind of like that, but it doesn't compare to this. And I know to the big ballers NL200 is chump change so this rant may sound silly, but I've been a broke fool for so long with dreams of making money at poker and this is the real beginning of it all.

I've played over 600k hands lifetime and that's given me time to learn how to deal with the swings. I think without all those hands and experiences I'd be set up for a big potential fall right now. I am spending a lot of time reminding myself to stay unattached to the money and thinking about all the tricks I've learned to deal with downswings. So I'm prepared for that to come. But I'm also focusing on staying in the moment. I can't be thinking about how I'm about to downswing. I have to just focus on each hand as it comes and make the best decisions possible. And when that downswing does hit, revisit NL100 asap, have fun with NL50 HU, take a break, and all the other things.

Ok, done rambling for now =)

wow 6max by Sliggy, March 04

I'd always heard 6max was better. Just never tried it until today (finally got around to exploiting DeucesCracked for their free subscription and downloaded a shitload of videos, mostly 6max, this is too long for brackets).

WOW! It's so much more fun! My strategical understanding of the game is put to much better use than just playing face up + more hands per hour + way more fish.

Anyone still on FR, CONVERT!

Perfect Timing! by EXCELED, March 04

Today I took down a satellite into a SCOOP event. I decided to take the money for the seat because I could use the $320 right now. It couldnt have come at a better time.

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp360/mbs03/scooptourneyshot.jpg

Im going to see Motley Crue next Wednesay so I can finally give my buddy the money for the ticket lol. This is also beer money for that night too lol. I kept some online though so I wouldnt have to drop back down to shit $5NL because Im such a BR nit. Now I can stay at 10NL full time and Im actually really close to moving up to NL25. Hopefully things can go really well for the rest of the month and I can move up at the end.

My hockey team got beat out of the playoffs tonight too. I can honestly say I wasnt upset at all. Its been fun but its also beena pain in the ass going back and forth from London on the weekends. Now my weekends are totally free which is going to be nice.

Things poker wise are looking really great and I can wait to see where it goes.

Later guys,

EXCELED

100nl shot by Pallywhacker, March 04

Took my first shot at 100nl today and it went pretty well overall. Played a couple hands horrendously but overall I think this is a limit I can beat consistently. Just need to keep at it and keep learning. Big thanks to k2o4 for the help much appreciated.

More Vague Help? by Sliggy, March 04

Hello all. Couple more concepts I'd like a few (very) general answers too.

Polarized Range: As far as I understand this means that your opponent either has the total nuts or complete air. This means that your question of whether or not to call with TPTK on a flush / paired board is basically a matter of figuring out whether your opponent has the absolute nuts (quads or fullhouse) or absolutely nothing (bottom pair / busted draw).

1. When do you define an opponent's range as polarized?
2. What factors aid in deciding if he has the nuts or air?

Isolation: This is basically the art of entering a pot with position by raising in LP when there have been a couple of limps before you. By doing this you push out the dealer / cutoff (hopefully) and are hoping to enter a pot with initiative and position, thereby increasing your chances to win the hand (especially HU).

1. Who are the best targets for isolating?
2. Why isolate? (I may have answered this already if I'm right but I could be wrong / need some elaboration).

Balancing your range: As far as I know this basically means making sure you don't polarize your own range. Things like flat calling small pocket pairs but also raising or reraising sometimes, calling raises with suited connectors on occasion but also flat calling AQs or AJs, openraising your premiums as well as your speculatives, and shoving over 3bets with AA and KK, but also at times with JTo and KJs type hands.

1. When is your range in need of balancing?
2. What are the cheapest ways to achieve this?

I know being a microstakes player none of this knowledge is essential, but I plan to make poker a pretty serious hobby (ie, trying hard to get very good at it). I've downloaded some DC / CR videos and I just basically want to make sure I'm clear on poker aspects and terminology that I'm not yet needing to use, but know about anyway. This also makes looking at highstakes hands more interesting just for pure entertainment value / interest / i actually understand what myth is talking about :D

This is getting lame by fira, March 04

I seem to have come to a BR ceiling. Played a session just now and lost 6bi in about 400 hands. I can't seem to get anywhere, and feel like I might be stuck at 600nl for the rest of my poker career. The showdown hands I get myself into are almost exclusively coinflips, and it seems that I've proven the law of large numbers in flipping and how it's entirely 0 EV. As I've mentioned before in an earlier post, my red line (non-showdown winnings) is always around break-even, so it just comes down to simple addition: 0 + 0 = 0.

Here's my 2009 graph:

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p99/ilovecatsmorethanyoulovecats/2009b.jpg

I feel like I'm just wasting time sitting at the tables because every time I get a 5 bi upswing it's immediately met by a 5 bi downswing, and it's getting really old. I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong because all the showdown hands are basically coinflips. I've asked about the non-showdown line before but the consensus seemed to be that the lines don't really matter. I've been running a bit bad lately but nothing compared to some people on LP with like -10 bi in EV or something.

Here are a bunch of hands that happened in today's session or very recently. It just seems like I'm better off just coinflipping like a degen instead of actually playing the game. Then again I'm down like 8k from organized flips. :/

Recovered by k2o4, March 04

Yeah, won all my flips when I got it in AIPF vs another full stack and lost all my flips AIPF vs short stacks, which is the way I prefer it to go =) Was able to get back to even for the month so now it's time to get really started.

But man, I hate sessions that are all about winning flips. Builds a lot of anxiety. When you're winning cause you have the nuts and are getting paid off it's awesome and relaxing. When you are getting into 3bet/4bet wars with regs and jamming JJ it gets a bit more tense, cause even though you know it's the right move you also know it's time for variance. Nice when that variance goes in your favor though!

Also got a nice concierge cashout of $1,110 so I feel good cause I know I've got all my bills and shit paid for this month. It's gonna be a fun month. Sitting on 41 buyins for NL200 so I have a good cushion. If I can get 50k hands in this month I'll be really happy. That will get me a solid amount of FPP and I should learn a lot. And if I run well it will be my biggest winning month for sure =)

No more stupid drunken sessions or playing while at all tilted! God, I was doing so good on that and then I slip 1 night and have my biggest losing session. Tilt is so evil.

small little BOOM switch by YoMeR, March 04

So I'm having a shit session as usual and getting ready to sit out and go kill a small animal when this hand in the last tourny happens.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/645939

after that it was ez bulldozing. Once we hit the final table i had about 30% of the total chips in play so it made it easy to get to HU and then dominate that nit.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/646007

some things to add
- wow 6 max tournies is the shit you can triple up without showdown easily
- the guy i bluffed there i soon busted him after wards and he just railed me talking madd shit for the next 3 hours which was hilarious. He kept asking what i had that hand i obv never told him.
- the tourny as a whole i played a 30 vpip/26 pfr with a 8% 3 bet the 2nd half i avged like 35/35 or so

it was all only for 1.1k tho

Good News/Bad News by bigbb33, March 04

WARNING: Whine post

GOOD NEWS: Met fish at HU today, he played 99% VPIP, 0% fold to 3bets (rarely 4bet), and absolutely awful postflop.
BAD NEWS: He took 5 buyins off me and left

Made some mistakes but overall just got smashed in the face by the deck, not so much in getting coolered or bad beat but in never making a good hand. ty FTP

Going to review my play later, was calling a bit too much near the end and made a huge 3x buyin deep shove vs a huge station on the river, probably bad play but because of the board and me being able to read his range pretty much perfectly its not that terrible.
