Im a College Grad
  Bigbobm, May 19 2008

I am officially a college graduate from Western New England College, with a BA (not BS) in Mathematical Sciences.

My future plans include taking an actuary test route to becoming a certified actuary in case I ever need or want a job. The test is on May 28th and I plan to go to a few graduation parties, have one of my own and then I'm off to Vegas to spoon with AJ (Doomer) every night whether he likes it or not.

update 9
  Raidern, May 19 2008

I arrived yesterday from a trip to Belo Horizonte, Brazil. I went there to visit my nephew, who is 5 months old now and of course get to know a bit of the city.

First day sucked. Our plane had connections, and the woman from desk service made a huge mistake by sending forgeting to mark "connection" on our luggage tickets. So the bags and etc stopped in the conection city, instead of heading to Belo HOrizonte. There were three bags, we received two on the 2nd day, and one on the third day. It sucked because we spent four days there, so most of it without our bags.

Anyway, we survived because we were at my sister's house, so we didn't need to buy new stuff. (ach I just lost a HU because I completely and suddenly felt like no playing and just did a lot of stupid plays in a row to quit fast).

There was this guy named Fabiano who was really cool. He works for my brother-in-law and did him this favour of showing us the city. He was like a tourist guide, showing places and telling histories about the city, how it grew up so fast and etc.

He drove us to one of the highest point of the city, we could see everything from there. You can see the pic of the view here:

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2826/p5150077qu1.jpg

Not that beautiful if you are too much into 'nature' stuff, but it's a powerful view, it was nice seeing the sun (behind the clouds ) go down and watching the lights turning on everywhere.

I also got to watch a football match of our 1st division, Cruzeiro vs Botafogo, in one of the biggest stadiums of Brazil, Mineirao. It was really cool, it's very different from watching home. They are singing and cursing the referee the whole time.

I like football a lot but don't watch many games in the stadium because the team of my city doesn't even play ANY national level game. It sucks so much that it can't qualify for the 3rd division. Disgusting.

I'll stop this post here and come back later, have work to do.

2008 is a disaster. Start over?
  [vital]Myth, May 18 2008

Background story (skip this if you know me personally, or if you don't really care about anything but the good stuff)

In 2007, I started the year still in college and playing poker frequently but never taking it very seriously. I was bouncing between $1/2 and $2/4 6-max in January, and managed to successfully make the move up to $2/4 sometime in February. But March was the month of my downfall, as I nearly went completely bust. I was back at $.5/1, and not rolled too well for it either. I'm still unsure how it happened, but it's so far behind me that reflection seems pointless. I'll never be able to go back and understand where I went astray at that time.

By the end of April, though, I had regrouped and was on a steady climb upwards. I began a one-month coaching deal with a prominent mid-to-high stakes player, and we worked together pretty frequently. In return, I gave him a cut of my profits during that month and the two months following. That didn't work out great - I felt like I learned a few very important things about NLH, but overall didn't improve very much. Nonetheless, by May, I was taking shots at $2/4 again. That was also the month I graduated from college (with a BS in biology).

Then, in June, I had a massive breakthrough. I had moved into my uncle's vacation home in Las Vegas, to be around for WSOP. I began playing $1/2 9-max, and fit very well into a style that destroyed the game. I made a cool 75 buy-ins that month, and was on top of the world.

It was then that I realized just how much I love poker. I had a decent job lined up (to begin in August) as a risk analyst, but I called the firm and told them I was turning it down. Even if I had more opportunity for outrageously high pay working in finance, I had to do what I loved. So I kept it up. The rest of the summer went well, including a $70k score in the Sunday Million. WSOP was very fun and educational, and I got to make (or improve) my connections with many great players, most notably Daut, Ket, and Rekrul.

I finished out the year pretty solid. From August through December, I made a little under $80k in cash games. I cashed out over $70k to pay off some enormous student loans I had accrued, pay off the loans my parents took out to help me with college, pad my stock portfolio, take a few (somewhat lavish) vacations, and finally move into a new apartment with my current roommate FrinkX. It was the first time I moved out of my parents' house (after college), so I spent a lot on new furniture and such.

Struggling in 2008

After such a good show in 2007, I've somehow lost the ability to win at all. So far in 2008, I haven't had a single consistent stretch of profits in online cash games. I don't believe I've had an entire week in the black, but if I have, there were only 1 or 2 of them. January was stiff loss of several thousand; February was a moderate loss of a few thousand too. In March, I hardly played online at all, because I was grinding tournaments at the Wynn Classic and playing live cash games for the most part. I did manage to make about $10k in live cash and profit about $5k from tournaments with my staking deal. April was similar to March, except I lost about $5k playing live cash and made about $18k in tournaments.

But the end of April and the beginning of May have been the most disastrous stretch yet. I was down about $9k in online cash during April, and am down another $14k so far in May. Combined with a LOT of EXTREMELY spewy spending so far this year (mostly at strip clubs and night clubs), AND the missing $40k bankroll that I lost in the RedNines/Microgaming scandal, I've barely got a working BR for $5/10 now. I was comfortably rolled for $25/50 less than 6 months ago. More importantly, I have absolutely no confidence. Everything I do is wrong, and every time I feel like I'm playing excellent, my results are worse than ever.

I've been such a consistent loser for so long now that I can't stop asking myself what other career I'll pursue once I go broke. I just took a break for a while, to refresh myself and relax from some serious frustration. So I sat down at some $5/10 and $3/6 6-max tables, confident and feeling good, and surprised in fact to see that the games were abnormally fishy. I thought I made a lot of good plays and got my money in appropriately. But I proceeded to win 8% of showdowns (yes, 8) and lose $5,500 in around 500 hands. And no, I wasn't getting sucked out against. Rather, I was doing things like re-shoving over an absolute maniac squeezer and running into AA, as well as flopping a double-gutter in a 3bet pot against somebody running 55/43 and 3betting every hand, and getting it in against QQ. I thought I was getting into good spots and making reasonable plays, but every single time my money went in, it was horribly wrong.

So, I drove up to LA from San Diego tonight, because I'm going to my BFF Day[9]'s college graduation tomorrow (yay!). On the way here, I realized that I just don't see myself ever succeeding in poker anymore. Not because I don't want to, or don't have the passion for it, or don't think I'm smart enough, or don't have the dedication, but simply because I can't picture myself winning. Like winning doesn't make sense to me anymore. So my mind was just wandering during my drive, and I was kinda panicking with myself about what other skills I have, where I can turn for another career choice because total failure in poker seems imminent.

But I could still hear Rekrul berating somebody a long time ago, saying they should be SO grateful simply to have the opportunity to click buttons on a mouse for a living, that they should find a way to make it work no matter what. And I realized, truly, that I can't fail at poker. There is no way that I don't "have what it takes" to succeed, and there is no way that I'm going to let myself down when I've got such a great thing in my hands. Poker life is the easiest, funnest, and most awesome life that I've ever imagined, and I see no better path to which I'd want to dedicate my energies. Somehow, I have to pull through. There has got to be a way through this mess I've made for myself, this mess I've made of myself.

So, I'm going to start over. I briefly played some $1/2 6-max earlier today while I was trying to get my PT3 HUD to work, and it felt outstanding, just because I truly and whole-heartedly believed I had a massive edge in the games. When I played my $5/10 session, I felt confident as well, but I can't deny that I've been unable to shake free of self-doubt in my normal games lately. For my own sake, I need to have some positive results, even if they're not nearly as profitable as I want them to be.

I'm going to get back to $1/2 and move up when I feel it's right, but not before winning 25 buy-ins (at each level). If (pleeeease one TIME) my coach finds time for me, I'll definitely play our sessions at $3/6 or $5/10, and if they go well and I feel I've learned a lot, I'll just stick with it and see how I progress from there. In the meantime, I'll be blogging about my quest for redemption.

My first brag !
  Sheitan, May 15 2008

Brag:

These 180s are yummy ! It takes long to farm 10 of them so i might buy an other 22' and 8-table them. It's very interesting to realize i made some progress poker wise, my tilt resistance improved a ton and my tourney game is getting sharper and sharper.

I finish a lot itm, but yet to score big even if i FTed the 15k today for a 5th place. I played some hu but i can tilt real fast and the variance is sick, but i like it so far. For now i need to focus on these 180s since they're my bread and butter and grind a big amount to see where my roi is standing and if i should keep playing them and how many tables i can add before i get a significant results drop.

So my goal is to farm 1000 of them with the occasional donkaments here and there.

Cheers guys !

Todays Session
  angryfishes, May 14 2008

So i noticed the way i play wont cut it as i move up and after you guys commented in the last post i tried to apply the main advice - limp less and raise more

(click on comments if img doesnt display)

so its only a change of 3% even tho ive been consicously trying to raise more and play less hands. shit. PLAY LESS HANDS!
PLAY LESS HANDS!
PLAY LESS HANDS!
PLAY LESS HANDS!

anyway RESULTS WISE i currently like the way its been going, playing 2-3 hours for the last 5 days, havent had a losing session yet.. and earning 551.912 over 18.5 hours = 29/hours which is a very very good rate for me! Although a third of the cash is due to the 200 for finishing #1 in the donkament

a few hands from today
this donk first shoved with this hand

weird dream
  Raidern, May 13 2008

I'll talk about the dream later in this post.

First the poker part. If you read my blog before you probably know that I don't play poker. But lately I signed up for the CDPoker promo and starting playing 5$ heads up. Not very smart for a beginner. The problem is that I can't stand cash games, and I'm not much of a fun of SNGs too, so all I have left are HU and Tourneys, that I really like.

So I decided to play HU only the enough for be able to play HU. You know, I don't care if I win/lose in a 50/50 rate, I just want to keep the 50$ there. But since I started playing I think i've won like 20 HU and lost 2. I pretty much know that, since I'm not a good player, it's probably because the tides are at my favour atm, but I'll probably lose more and even stuff eventually.

I like HU because of the mind game between you and the other player. It's funny how most of them start really aggressive until you win a big pot. Then they slowdown a lot their play and you kinda put them under control. That's I like about it. Except when I feel intimidated hehe, then I try to clean my thoughts and play a bit agressive.

----

The dream

I started learning dutch a couple weeks ago. Actually, teaching myself dutch, according to one of the book's title. Ik heet Antoniel, Ik kom uit Brazil. So, if you read a bit about dutch language, you know that their G is sick hard to pronounce. Looks like you are scratching your throat. What I didn't know is that their G also have a sound other than this one.

Then in one of the lessons there was the word 'Engelsman' and I start thinking to myself how would be if the G sound of Engelsman was like the 'throat scratching' sound.

So, in my dream (finally) I went to a CHURCH, where they were teaching DEAF people how to play POKER, to ask a teacher how was the sound of that G. She said it was like 'throat scratching' (she was wrong lol).

Today I talked to joy aka meat about it and he taught me how to pronounce that. Not hard but I'm still doing it wrong hehe.

Anyway, dutch soo hard, when I'm trying to read texts I get kinda unmotivated because of how complicated the words look, but I guess with time they will be more familiar to me.

One thing that made me 'happy' was that meat said my pronounciation is good for someone who just started learning the language, so it's a positive thing.

-----

Thursday I'm going to visit my sister and nephew in Belo Horizonte. My nephew has 5 months now I never saw him. Nice that I'm also going to meet some internet friends and of course get to know the city. I heard the city is kinda cold, so that's a plus in my opinion. Let's see how that goes

DAMNIT
  wakeboarrder, May 13 2008

Poker hasn't been too great lately i started off the month up like 2700 bucks or something, i knew this was all a heater and i was bound to lose sooner or later. And it has, the downswing has hit me and im down like 1500 or something stupid (some off tilt) but alot of bad beats and other things like that.

I have 1300 on ftp that I'd like to trade for stars money if anyone is willing. I need a trusted member on this site and someone who is well known..I will send first if your well known on this site

$900 BR but still playing NL12
  angryfishes, May 13 2008

I still dont know what a good players pokertracker figures should look like for 6 max.
Can some of the better players critque my stats to have when i move up? Right now i limp alot cause i know if i hit the flop a donk will call my shove.

if image doesnt display click on the comments and it will appear

And what is considered a high BB?
My bb at the moment 15.56 at NL12 (pounds 0.3-0.6) and since its over 10k hands its def sustainable right?

so my problem now is im not playing NL 20 as much simply because my bb there is like 2 and im making far more money at NL12 + its less streeful = happiness EV.

I did take a shot at NL40 and i am 14.4/bb but thats just over 200 hands so that number is meaningless.

Anyway.. suggestions? What should i do? Theres obviously a tradeoff between improving and making more money. Should i just skip NL20 altogether and move to NL40 when i made enough? Im gonna use 25 buy ins so thats when my roll is 1k.

Restarting cashgames
  NeillyJQ, May 11 2008

I've been lucky enough to have become the student of LP's own mbsalsa, aka loosefer. He has given me alot of advice, and rules to follow as i play, to help get myself out of this degenerate funk that i've been in.

I'll post the rules that I have to follow, or risk losing my teacher and my poker career.

For anyone else that is suffering from a degenerate mindset, this could potentially help you as well.

First off let me iterate that I'm done with HU cashgames until my bankroll is atleast $2,500, but preferably atleast $4,000.

I'm also going to be playing on atleast 50 buy-ins, but striving to have atleast 70 buy-ins for each limit as a cushion.

And heres my new bible to follow for poker;
play on 50+ bi (Cashgames / tournaments)
when moving up / taking a shot, set a tight stop loss
(4 buy-ins move down until u make it back)
then u can take another shot
If i lose 5 bi in 1 day = QUIT
SET time limits for ur sessions; 2 hrs max. (only stretch it if
the game is perfect and u have a large edge)
take ur time
dont focus on the money
focus on ur play
and winning EV from your opponents

the money isn't real, and is real at the same time. respect it.
focus on raping ur opponents.

you can honestly say that "I'm playing to make good decisions and win money

doesn't matter neccessaRILY IF YOU'RE winning or losing
highonlifesinz88 (7:56:14 PM): its about the other playersd
highonlifesinz88 (7:56:17 PM): if there is some cash cow
highonlifesinz88 (7:56:21 PM): with 200 bb
highonlifesinz88 (7:56:29 PM): and has huge leaks
highonlifesinz88 (7:56:31 PM): I'd stick around
when i hit nl25 cut down on tables
work on ur play, quality not quantity

but you have a lot of leaks (in discipline, patience, and play)

fORTGET ABOUT THE WORD "GAMBLE"
DONT use poker as an outlet to gamble,

These are my rules for my first lesson with mbsalsa, and im sure we will be adding more day in day out.

I've come to the realization that discipline is pretty much the only thing that has been holding me back, as well as some aggression that needs to be toned down.

Flame as u want,

I want to succeed badly,
and will do just about anything to make it to become a 1/2 - 3/6 grinder by the end of the year.

GL everyone,

Ryan (DReaMe)

QLD poker players?
  angryfishes, May 11 2008

anyone else in queensland or studying at st lucia?
just found out that lachlan studies there too
maybe a group of us could hit the casino one day, theres NL100 there now.

havent posted in forever. been playing at the nl pound tables at crypto and omfg there are so many fish. i would say NL10 is harder at stars than NL25 is at crypto

and this was the god damn gayest hand of the night. this guy cold called two allins on a draw + definetly domniated pair and sucked out and ended up 5 buy ins up

it sucks when u get it in best in a USD $120 pot and lose to a bunch of fucking donkeys

GREEN!
  TianYuan, May 10 2008

Green for may omg ship it etcetc

+900 today playing 2/5 and 1/2 and .5/1 HU (dropped 3 buyins to huge coolers, doh), I ran like teh sungod incarnate @ 1/2 (running like god at 1/2 is stnd for me :D as opposed to HU).

Day was sweating me during the HU which totally rocked since I realized huge patience leaks for me, alas, even good play can't prevent total coolers like trips vs boat

Standard run like god 1/2 hands (+926$ in 403 hands):
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/442152
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/442135
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/442113 WTF?!!? I'm a luckbox tho, for sure.

Standard 2/5 hands (+285$ in 483 hands):
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/442090
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/442144 - this hand was so weird, so so weird - the guy 3bets AQ, then checks a Q hi flop and now he pots and snapcalls a shove with ace high lol :D Backwards much?
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/442112

No HU hands cause my PT is weird and won't actually open the hands.. but, -301$ in 177 hands.

Ahhhh it feels great to be back in the green, and I've logged a very nice amount of hands this month (playing between 1 and 6 tables, mostly 3-4 I guess). Not the kind of huge amounts I played in december but still, 1k a day or thereabout is an amount I'd love to keep up.

Also tried to play some PLO (microstakes obv, nl25) earlier today which didn't go too well (I'm a fish(, if anyone has any recommendations for good PLO primer vods or reading feel free to link me.
