Poker players Jaime and Matt Staples saw it right to the end and won a huge weight bet with Bill Perkins. Thanks to that they cashed $150,000. It's worth noting though that such bets can be risky.

March 25th was a very important day for Staples brothers. It was the weighing day to decide a bet they made with Bill Perkins. The difference in their weight was to be just one pound or less. The problem was that at the beginning of the bet there was more than 30 pounds of a difference between them.

Once the weighing was over and it turned out they weigh exactly the same the poker community rushed with congratulations. You can read more about it here. Many people were amazed by how much Jaime Staples has changed. At the time poker journalist Steve Ruddock pointed out however to an important element of such bets.

“I don't know what motivated Bill Perkins to offer such a bet, but despite all the critic towards Matt Staples, who had to gain weight Jaime and his brother looked happy and fit today. They also seemed ready to lead a new healthy lifestyle – comments Steve.

He also noted that “Jaime lost over 52 kilograms and he didn't have to get involved in any strange week-long fasting. Of course Matt had to gain 24.5 kg, but he has a lot more muscles now and there is a diet that can help him easily get rid of excessive fat”.

One important factor is that Matt now knows how to build muscles and exercise. His brother has learnt an important lesson here, too.

“Does it mean we should celebrate a bet like that? In this case yes, but only because Staples brothers had good fun with the bet. Some similar bets often end badly”.

Journalist reminds that there were some bets that were simply dangerous. One of them was between Perkins and Adam Schwartz. Hedge fund manager offered the latter $25,000 if he loses 36 kilograms in just 10 months. Shwartz also had to keep the weight in the next 2 months. At the beginning of the bet he was 104 and at the end it was just 68 kilograms. Schwartz won the best, but it cost him a lot of effort.

Ruddock says that if it was “Perkins' intention to motivate him, then Schwartz could have easily stopped at 75 kilograms”. Schwartz instead was forced to starve for 10 weeks and he barely eat anything at that time.

It was a similar case with Mike Matusow'sand Ted Forrest's bet. At one time Mike Matusow thought Forrest would die while attempting the bet. “When we made the bet I told him: “Just don't die on me. If it happens I won't even take any of the $150,000”. I also told him: “I don't have the two million to pay you, either”. I decided for this challenge because I thought it was impossible” – says Matusow.

Ruddock summarizes that: “There is a difference between encouraging somebody to lead a healthy lifestyle like it was with the Staples, and forcing somebody to hurt themselves in a stupid way. We, as a poker community should be very careful as what we promote”.

Staple's internal organs and surgeries are his private life. Just because he's a public figure doesn't mean everything is public. Your comment upsets me. Why do you want to know about another person's surgery? Are you obese and considering the surgery or something, you could talk to someone who's had the surgery and join a support group.

And no, he lost the weight through diet and exercise, he's warrior. A poker warrior.

Well done

if poker is dangerous to them i would rank sports betting as a Kodiak grizzly bear who smells blood after you just threw a javelin into his cub - RaiNKhAN

You're a warrior as well. A sensitive warrior.
