finance related stuff "used" to take math guys but in the current economic climate even new graduates from the top 5 universities in the states remain unemployed

I'd prolly say wait till the econ turns around a bit more... honestly your efforts in finding a job right now, without contact especially, are going to bring in very little in reward.

If you can, get a hold of your Uni's alumni directory and call/email everyone who works in finance for a job / internship

actuarial mathematics is pretty interesting. It is a good combination of business and mathematics and mostly takes place in the insurance or consulting world. In consulting, they usually deal with Health and Retirement(pension) things. In insurance, you deal with things like pricing, modeling, and data analysis. It is generally a good job, well-paid and non-stressful. However, there are exams, which companies require you to pass to move up in the company. The first exams deal with probability, financial mathematics, and life insurance topics. Companies also give you about $4000 per exam passed along with study time. They are not too difficult with good math background. Talk to me or bigbobm if you are interested in this.
