Politically Correct
  nolan, Nov 14 2012

I think Political Correctness is pretty fascinating. There is a clear 'party line' if you will on what types of things are OK and which are not.

Anyways, being a bored retired poker player I stumbled upon a pretty interesting (to me anyways) e-battle between some people in Vancouver.

I don't want to present links just yet but the basic cliffnotes are that a university group in Vancouver attempted to open a 'Men's Center.' It arguably, is a response to the Women's Centers that already exist and the extensive "Women's Studies" courses taught there.

Anyways, I'm clearly a bit biased in this regard being a male and such, but it had in the past bothered me a bit that a lot of the groups/student unions at myown Alma Mater were certainly female-centric. I suppose bothered is perhaps not the best word, but it was noticeable that there was a general atmosphere of catering to the female student body ahead of the male one. It was common to walk past signs such as "MEN RAPE" and "MEN CAN STOP RAPE CULTURE" etc. I found these a bit troubling then as I do now.

Anyways, I'm typing a whole lot of blah blah to really just to ask something I'm curious and undecided on. That is, does the replacement test hold weight?

The placement test is simple, and I'll use an example from a random Women's Studies facebook page that was linked on Reddit.

'Woman, without her, man is nothing'

Clearly, a lot of woman would fist pump about a statement like this. Many men would as well. However, clearly if you switch the wording

'Man, without him, woman are nothing'

This would be a horrific thing to say worthy of much derision.

My real question though, is does this 'replace Subject X with Subject Y and now watch the reaction' hold weight as a form of argument?

I've always been aware of the whole women's studies/rape culture liberal stuff that's going on but to be fair I hadn't given it a ton of thought until recently. I also hadn't considered how much things such as Men's Centers may actually be neccesary, particularly in a place such as North America where many young men are involved in military actions and exposed to a lot of raw violence.

Anyways I know that wasn't very cohesive but I wanted to get some of this out there and maybe someone from LP digs it and can give me some interesting links or alternative viewpoints on this type of stuff, cause I'm admittedly ignorant to most of it.

Got my FTP account history
  nolan, Nov 10 2012

The only thing I did the three days before black friday was sit at 5/10 hu and not get sat.
Hadn't realized I actually hadn't played a hand in quite awhile before black firday. Found that kind of striking.

I have an amount likely larger than my Father's salary just sitting in internet limbo. Such a weird period in my life from start to finish.

Also got a link sent to me by a friend I had growing up about a guy getting busted with absurd amounts of LSD, Ecstasy and some other stuff (according to news reports anyways) in the Boston area. He was someone I had hung out with at a few WPT/EPT's and was certainly an amicable fellow.

What a wicked web we weave I suppose!

Anyways, Ulrich Schanuss is baller.

Buffalo Poker Classic
  NeillyJQ, Nov 05 2012

3rd place.

17.5k

I got 5700.

Paid off my a debt to my father for 1618.
Paid off my rent for this month and next month.
Paid off a debt to my step mother for 916.

Kept a lil over 2k, going to chop mtt's with my dad and he will buy up to 70% in any 1k, or stake me with the same deal as the past if I want to freeroll it most likely as he'd always want to make more as well.

long grueling mtt - great learning experience - many pros came out, good strong field, happy to get what i got, going to grind another week of online cash before going to the live cash arena, maybe 2-3 more weeks online before casino. its no rush, but will be playing a lot of live days cg's and mtt's. just 1/2 (bring 300 - 2 150 bi's in a 1/2 game is fine for most 8 hour days, usually never have to rebuy in a 1/2 game)

So ya thats what happened whats going on it really sucks, 2nd was 28k and that woulda really fucking helped my life a ton and paid off a ton of debts..

oh well, close to busto, on the way to robusto i hope, been back on my own dime broke for a couple weeks, now im rollin again, just took me going to a good mtt.

waiting on finding a car thats decent as well which is a lil stressful in the cash situation but i've been here before, am invited to a ton of great games in buffalo salamanca and altoona, and know of all the mtt's going on within a 100 mile radius pretty much.

Just grind er away and hopefully be at my higher self, and best player that I can be come next wsop etc;

one step at a time from here.

gl lp,
Ryan

Another look at my betting mistakes
  The Dean, Oct 22 2012

In poker then there is a reality that dictates that you are either ahead or behind your opponent at any one given time. If the flop is 10c-8d-2h and you have Ac-9c and your opponent has Ad-3d then you are ahead……if they have Qc-10d then you are behind.

Taking away the rare times when you are tied with your opponent then you are other ahead or behind. If you are ahead of your opponent then you need to assess how far ahead you are. This is relevant because it helps us to establish on whether or not we can bet or raise for value. For example if we have say 10c-10d on a 10h-4s-2d board then we are certain to be ahead……however the question is “can we bet for value”? For a bet to be a value bet then we have to be called or raised by a hand that is worse than ours.

If there is no chance of this happening then you are not value betting but simply betting and if you are betting without a good reason then you are betting badly. So most of the time with very powerful hands then we should be checking to induce optimal value on either the turn or the river if there is no chance of us extracting it on the flop. However this boils down to us betting for value because either correctly or incorrectly then we deduced that we had the best hand.

If we deduce that we don’t have the best hand then we are either betting or raising as a bluff. However bluffing is the flip side to betting for value because if there is very little chance in our bluff working then we really shouldn’t be bluffing. You are only betting as a bluff if there is some chance that a superior hand will fold (or inferior hands fold that could have bluff raised back) in the same way that you are only betting for value when weaker hands can call or raise.

So it pays to remember in poker that there are only two reasons to initially place money into the pot and they are because you are value betting or bluffing and all of this is based on whether or not you are ahead or behind in the hand and by how much. Thats it for now and I will be playing another session this evening mainly NL50 cash at www.888poker.com

Spam Blogging (cool post-metal band inc)
  nolan, Oct 19 2012

Isis is probably one of the best bands of all time.

I'm not a metal fan per se, I'm not even a rock music fan per se. Somehow or another, I've been aware of this band forever and I really think this particular album is one of the best albums of this genre ever.

It has to be on account of I like it.

So sick. The entire album just flows so well. According to google the band also considers this their masterpiece as well.

Such a dope first track too. I think Carry or Maritime are my favorite though.

Anyone else familiar with Isis?

Also, everything elite in the world seems to be focused around the Northeast of the US. Quadrant 1 USA #1 region world, suck it scandis.

I don't understand how you win this in a court of law in a nation where separation of church and state is explicitly implied.

Prostitution
  nolan, Oct 16 2012

Should Prostitution be legal or not?

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/15/us/maine-alleged-prostitution/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

Read this today and it got me thinking. It looks like the accused could be facing serious time.

Something strikes me a bit wrong about the government being able to incarcerate you for selling your own body in a situation specific to this case (i.e. not human trafficking/dodginess)

Wondering how LP feels.
