So my ancient ridiculously large and heavy 35" tube TV got a bit damaged when I moved last week and the picture is coming out distorted. It was time for an upgrade anyway.
I kinda suck with technology and I know a lot of guys here are good with it. So please help me find a good TV at a good price.
- LCD or Plasma?
- Should I even consider a DLP? Looks like for the same price as a 32" LCD, I can get a 50" DLP.
- Any specific brand or model that is strongly recommended?
- Any recommendations on where to buy? (I'm in NYC) Should I even consider buying a used one on craigslist? |

LCD for games/computer
Plasma for movies/TV
Good brands:
LCDs- Samsung/Sony/Sharp
Plasmas- Panasonic/Samsung and Pionner if you got big bucks
Pick a 1080p panel obv too with 3 HDMI plug.
Pionner is teh shit on the plasma TV field, especially the "Kuros", if you play lot of games and want to plug your computer on it then go for samsung 750 52' full hd TV those are teh shit in LCDs. Oh and please get a Blu-Ray dvd player to go along with and an HDMI cable (don't pay more than 30$, the monster cables are a rip off), hook the BR to the TV, you won't believe what you see (pick a recent movie tho or if you have kids a cartoon, they are sick @ 1080p).
Buy it brand new so you can bring it back if you have burnt pixels/any problems.
Don't buy an LG, lotta problems this year and quality dropped a ton. |

I'm looking to spend a maximum of $1,000.
I don't have a console game system so the TV is mainly for watching sports/movies.
Anyone have any feedback on the DLPs? |

DLPs are good but the vision angle sucks and you have to change the lamp every 10k hours on average but they are cheaper for those reasons. A lamp usually costs between 200-500$, you can find a 46' DLP (or 3LCD) for this price full HD, if you want to pick one like this you should go with the Sony ones or Toshiba.
For 1k$, i think you can manage a deal for a 42' Plasma Panasonic 760p, not full hd but the quality is still here, go to a Best buy and look for the liquidations, i paid mine 600$ and it s a 42' plasma from panasonic ( i had a sick deal cuz i knew the manager tho), i'm VERY happy of it so far. The quality of HD channel is tremendous and you only exploit the 1080p with a BR anyway... |

Blu-Ray
PU: Plasmas perform way better than LCDs. Their contrast/response time is way superior and the colors are stunning, LCDs are very nice tho but even the high end LCDs can't compete with an average plasma TV. Only problem with plasmas is you can burn the screen with static pictures and the reflection on the screen can be annoying if you have a lot of brightness in your room.
Otherwise, 100% plasmas imo. |

Make sure your TV supports at least 56k
Laser picture in picture is a must to avoid eye strain
You can tell a cheap television by the fact that it's size is measured in inches. Look for a set that's at least 106 cm |

if u get a DLP, get one with the LED technology, it lengthens the lifespan to match lcds and plasmas.
i prefer LCDs and since ur only watchin tv with it u only need 720p. if ur gonna watch bluray or ps3 def get 1080. the difference between 1920x1080 and 1400x720 is huge (obv) |

if its only for HDTV you dont need a 1080p. get a bigger 720p instead

the other day i was in a shop and couldnt tell the difference between their $1000 42" plasma and their $5000+ 42" plasma...
anyway, one good piece of advice to consider if that LCDs always looks brighter and clearer in highly lit areas (e.g. a shop with lots of flourescent lighting) - plasmas always look a bit fuzzy in this light but are a lot clearly in regular levels of light. |
