So my ancient ridiculously large and heavy 35" tube TV got a bit damaged when I moved last week and the picture is coming out distorted. It was time for an upgrade anyway.

I kinda suck with technology and I know a lot of guys here are good with it. So please help me find a good TV at a good price.

- LCD or Plasma?

- Should I even consider a DLP? Looks like for the same price as a 32" LCD, I can get a 50" DLP.

- Any specific brand or model that is strongly recommended?

- Any recommendations on where to buy? (I'm in NYC) Should I even consider buying a used one on craigslist?

Get an LCD from Samsung or LG, Koreans will never let you down.

LCD for games/computer
Plasma for movies/TV

Good brands:
LCDs- Samsung/Sony/Sharp
Plasmas- Panasonic/Samsung and Pionner if you got big bucks

Pick a 1080p panel obv too with 3 HDMI plug.

Pionner is teh shit on the plasma TV field, especially the "Kuros", if you play lot of games and want to plug your computer on it then go for samsung 750 52' full hd TV those are teh shit in LCDs. Oh and please get a Blu-Ray dvd player to go along with and an HDMI cable (don't pay more than 30$, the monster cables are a rip off), hook the BR to the TV, you won't believe what you see (pick a recent movie tho or if you have kids a cartoon, they are sick @ 1080p).

Buy it brand new so you can bring it back if you have burnt pixels/any problems.

Don't buy an LG, lotta problems this year and quality dropped a ton.

Odds are exactly 50%, either happens or it doesnt

I'm looking to spend a maximum of $1,000.

I don't have a console game system so the TV is mainly for watching sports/movies.

Anyone have any feedback on the DLPs?

Sheitan   Canada. Oct 08 2008 11:35. Posts 4217

DLPs are good but the vision angle sucks and you have to change the lamp every 10k hours on average but they are cheaper for those reasons. A lamp usually costs between 200-500$, you can find a 46' DLP (or 3LCD) for this price full HD, if you want to pick one like this you should go with the Sony ones or Toshiba.

For 1k$, i think you can manage a deal for a 42' Plasma Panasonic 760p, not full hd but the quality is still here, go to a Best buy and look for the liquidations, i paid mine 600$ and it s a 42' plasma from panasonic ( i had a sick deal cuz i knew the manager tho), i'm VERY happy of it so far. The quality of HD channel is tremendous and you only exploit the 1080p with a BR anyway...

Odds are exactly 50%, either happens or it doesnt

Blu-Ray

PU: Plasmas perform way better than LCDs. Their contrast/response time is way superior and the colors are stunning, LCDs are very nice tho but even the high end LCDs can't compete with an average plasma TV. Only problem with plasmas is you can burn the screen with static pictures and the reflection on the screen can be annoying if you have a lot of brightness in your room.

Otherwise, 100% plasmas imo.

Odds are exactly 50%, either happens or it doesnt

Make sure your TV supports at least 56k
Laser picture in picture is a must to avoid eye strain
You can tell a cheap television by the fact that it's size is measured in inches. Look for a set that's at least 106 cm

if u get a DLP, get one with the LED technology, it lengthens the lifespan to match lcds and plasmas.

i prefer LCDs and since ur only watchin tv with it u only need 720p. if ur gonna watch bluray or ps3 def get 1080. the difference between 1920x1080 and 1400x720 is huge (obv)

if its only for HDTV you dont need a 1080p. get a bigger 720p instead

the other day i was in a shop and couldnt tell the difference between their $1000 42" plasma and their $5000+ 42" plasma...

anyway, one good piece of advice to consider if that LCDs always looks brighter and clearer in highly lit areas (e.g. a shop with lots of flourescent lighting) - plasmas always look a bit fuzzy in this light but are a lot clearly in regular levels of light.

I have the 40" sony lcd from stars and I really like it. I'm pretty sure it retails for about 1k. A few of my friends have samsung lcds around the same size and are happy with them. 1080p all the way. some stations already broadcast in 1080i and the 360/ps3 look really sick.

Of course it was a good shove, I won

wich corresponds to .... 720p (regular HD).

Progressive and interlaced are two different methods to refresh the screen (that goes for the letters "p" and "i" and the number is for the number of horizontal lines the native panel can display), progressive is better since it's more natural for the human eye and improve movements quality overall on the screen.

There's no channels i heard of that display in Full HD yet, only 720p or 1080i wich is the exact same thing.

OK I've narrowed it to these choices:

Samsung - 40" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV $1099
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.j...amp;type=product&id=1205537712071

Samsung - 42" Class 720p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV $897
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.j...amp;type=product&id=1202650190227

Samsung - 40" 720p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV $879
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.j...amp;type=product&id=1202649423953

Samsung - 50" 1080p Slim-Depth DLP HDTV $999
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.j...amp;type=product&id=1202649765525

I think it comes down to these factors:

- Should I pay $220 more for 1080 over 720?

- For the same price I can get a 42 plasma or 40 LCD but the plasma is only 1024 x 768 pixel resolution while the LCD is 1366 x 768 resolution. Which is better?

- DLP seems to be the best value. I know that I'll need to change the bulb after some years but what about thi picture quality?

- Can someone look into the 2 LCD models that I linked and tell me if any of the other features are significant factors? Looks like the 1080 one has DNIe and 20000:1 contrast and a whole bunch of other things that I have no idea about. Also if someone can also tell me why this model which is 32" is more expensive than the 40"? The only difference I can see is an extra HDMI input.

THX to all for your advice.

yes, the resolution is a huge difference if ur gonna get a bluray player or ps3.

obv higher resolution is better

bulbs are very expensive and i guess once a year if u watch a lot of tv (estimate), u need a LED powered DLP and its lifetime will match the LCDs

Usually if 2 TVs are same resolution they are really hard to distinguish in terms of quality, just go down to ur local store and see if there's a difference. i find they are all the same and settings are always adjustable (too light, too dark, too red etc). no clue what DNIe is but the contrast does matter a lot in terms of picture quality. most would say that most retail TVs's contrast settings are good enough, and that stuff like 20000:1 are for like professional photo editors and such

JYang   United States. Oct 13 2008 13:42. Posts 2669

i think DLP is most balanced picture quality

LCD screens the pic may suck when viewing from an angle

plasmas may have burn in effects, but newer technology pretty much eliminated.

i dont think u'll notice any difference in quality, go to ur local store and see for urself. if the difference is hardly noticable then prolly just go with the more economical one.

if the DLP has LED technology or similar, go for it

if not stick with LCD
