Help using virtual dub

I've been making videos of myself playing to show to friends so they can give me advice. I use camtasia and usually produce it (the rendering part) in WMV. The problem is that the files end up being pretty big (291MB for a 1 hour vid) and it isn't that pleasant for them to DL. I found old threads suggesting to use Vdub (Virtual Dub) to compress it. I've DL'd the program but have no idea how to use it to compress the video. I haven't found anything on their site (though I didn't look THAT hard yet).

If anyone uses Vdub and camtasia to make vidoes/compress em, can you please explain to me what I need to do?

Thanks!

with vdub its pretty simple you just go into Video/Compression and choose whichever codec you want. I use a xvid one. then just file/save as avi

with camtasia studio theres some option called "produce video as" and then i think you choose custom and then recommended settings, something along those lines

fuck I should just sell some of my Pokemon cards, if no one stakes that is what I will have to do - lostaccountLast edit: 07/01/2008 20:15

o noez I got rick rolled

When I produce it in camtasia, what format do I make it as? I did this last one as AVI instead of WMV. Is that right?

Also I tried compressing it but I keep getting an error when I choose any divx options. My options are:

cinepak codey by radius
divx 6.7 codec (2logical cpus)
divx 6.7 yv12 decoder
inteliyuv codec
intel iyuv codec
microsoft RLE
microsoft video 1
techsmith screen capture codec

I tried both the divx ones and I get an error saying:

"Unable to initialize the output video codec. Check that the video codec is compatible with the output video frame size and that the settings are correct, or try a different one."

pretty sure I already have it. Will find it again anyway. How do I get it to show up in that vdub list?

NM, DL'd it and it's working!

Question: What will people need to use to watch this? Can they use media player or do they need divx? Do they need to DL xvid too?

they will need xvid too, but its a pretty common codec, and not hard to install

ok, this is definitely not working. When I did WMV a 1 hour vid came out to 291MB. The AVI one came out to 1.1GB. It's compressing now and it's about 85% done and the projected file size is over 500MB. So I don't think this is saving much space. Maybe I rendered it in the wrong AVI type?

compress the sound to mp3 as well... go audio: full processing mode. then select compression.
but still shouldn't be that big.
maybe quality or frame rate is higher than it needs to be. anything more than 15 frames per second is excessive

I think maybe I did something wrong when rendering it in camtasia. I just chose AVI and nothing anymore specific...

I will try doing the sound now. shit, what should I choose out of this list

Sorry, I'm a complete noob on this stuff.

MPEG layer 3 = mp3, anything like 22kb 22k Hz mono is probly fine. camtasia doesn't give you an option for the avi format it outputs as far as I can see, but if you are recording a large screen resolution like 2048x1600 then you should expect a half our vid to be about a gig.
you can reduced the quality and framerate in the video codec setting in vitual dub when you go to "compress". that should cutdown size a bit.
just play around with the every possible setting and make lots of mistakes on a test video... really mess that shit up, and you'll learn how to use it fast.
