I'm supposed to present a case of a company entering a market they've never been on to and problems involving that and the way they solved it. I'm sure someone can suggest some interesting topic, otherwise i have to go with something stupid like Mercedes entering China or Walmart trying to enter the Far East or something dumb like that. I was thinking about marijuana suppliers in the USA - would be cool since the society i live in has a conservative socialism based view of weed, but that's a domestic market so it seems out of topic and I can't think of anything else. I guess it doesn't necessarily have to a successful case as long as I'm able to spot what went wrong and how it should've gone, but theorycrafting is easy when done in class so it should be fine

So give me suggestions and here s something for all the lurkers

I read a great book ages ago in the 90s about how Nintendo entered and conquered USA

edit: MAYBE one of these two but i don't remember. most likely the second link

was all about the business side and managers involved, their strategic decisions and the resistance they faced from big american corps. trying to abuse legislation/litigation to fight them off

can it not be a case of a company successful for one product doing something new? like how supermarkets in the USA suddenly added gas stations. does that count as entering a new market or you only mean physically going to another place

or on a serious note apple and phones

It seems to be not very profitable in the long run to play those kind of hands. - Gus Hansen

I think it has to be physically somewhere else, since there are some other factors like culture and different laws and blah blah, was thinking about Apple as well.
Nintendo sounds pretty cool actually so I ll probably go with that so far there s a bunch of info about it on the internet since i don't have the time to read those atm, but i ll read them for entertainment later i guess

Supermarket chain Tesco failure in US market, how it failed at identifying local market trends. Also retail chain Target failure in Canada. Both subjects have decent amount of articles about em.

or tesco's huge success in korea for adapting to local trends

i've spent a few months in seoul and didn't know anything about tesco having ventured there.. can you tell me more about what they did there and which chain they have an interest in/run, just in brief cliffs?

starbucks is another great example. not just japan but how modern italian-influenced coffee culture swept any developed world nation after spreading out from USA. BBC had a great documentary about how it swept the UK, though I doubt I can find it now

I 3rd Tesco. It is really interesting. Apple is lame and everyone knows about it anyway.
Wish you were more specific about things like what subject is it for, how exactly is the task worded, how long it should be, what should it accomplish. Thinking wider and creatively makes it so much more interesting and rewarding to complete the task. Don't neccessarily have to go outside the box but apple and walmart must be the first things that pop into peoples minds.

m-pesa mobile credit as default currency is really interesting. http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-06-05/safaricoms-m-pesa-turns-kenya-into-a-mobile-payment-paradise

Yeah, don't do apple.

Another good one may be Japanese car makers and their expansion into NA (possibly SA? No idea about that place) markets. How they started off selling dirt cheap (with subsequent poor quality) and their transition from that to a high quality, top selling vehicle. Can discuss market segmentation through the different models, the crazy warranty they offered vs other competitors, etc.

Just an idea.

@cariadon Cause i don't really have to be specific, I don't want you guys to do it for me i just want a suggestion about a particular case i can work on, cause all of the ones I thought about were dull and boring or as you've mentioned well known like Apple & phones
@Silver No idea, I got it from another forum so :D
