So I've gone back to training again after a long break and I've been playing lots of live poker over the last two years as well. I seem to have a problem thought with playing poker after training. It's like my adrenaline is way up and I don't think as clearly, play often on instinct, and am much more reckless with my play.

I know there are several guys on here who also do both, was wonder if anyone had the same issues and hoping maybe they had come up with some solutions. Other than the standard get a nice post work out meal in and kick back for an hour or two before playing. Even when I do both of these I still run into the same issues.

Any help and or ideas would be much appreciated.

Osssss.

That's weird if anything I will feel better and more clear headed/ready to play after working out.

Yea I hear you. I specifically mentioned poker & BJJ for a couple reasons. First BJJ isn't like a bike ride or some weight lifting with plenty of breaks. It's very physically tough, for me at least, and really wears you down hard. Plus the fact that you are battling with other trained guys makes your adrenaline shoot through the roof. I think you get a way bigger adrenaline spike after BJJ than your average work out.

Also a big part of it isn't so much that I can't think clearly although I mentioned that, it's more so that I act very instinctual and reckless which is specific to poker.

I know what you mean.. Chemicals man, when exercising, your body not only releases adrenaline, but also serotonin, and dopamine.

Shortly after working out, I often feel a similar sensation to how I felt on ADD meds, while playing poker - more confidence, instinctual play..

however, bjj/mma is the most exhausting (well, sparring) thing I've ever done, when I get home all I want to do is relax

I do both, my experience is similar to traxamillion. Might be an individual thing?

Are you sure you're not using too much strength in your bjj? I used to have the same problems early on in my training, but once I focused on techniques while rolling I noticed my focus for the rest of the day was greatly increased as well.

We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.

when i lift i feel fine and can play all night.
when i have a moderate bjj session i feel fine and can play.
when i have a tough bjj session i cant concentrate at all.

the more exhausted you are after a workout, the more you need a bit of sleep before you can do something mentally straining.
