Armed men stormed a party in this violent Mexican border city, killing 13 high school and college students in what witnesses said they thought was an attack prompted by false information.
About two dozen teens and young adults were hospitalised after the assault on Saturday in Ciudad Juarez, a drug cartel-plagued city which is one of the deadliest in the world.
Grieving witnesses and family members told The Associated Press on Sunday they thought the victims, mostly residents of the housing complex where the attack occurred, had no ties to drug traffickers.
"It must have been a huge mistake," said Martha Lujan, who lives at the housing complex.
The young adults had gathered to watch a boxing match, Lujan said, when two trucks pulled up loaded with armed men who opened fire.
Ten people were killed at the scene and other three died at local hospitals, Chihuahua State Attorney Patricia Gonzales said.
The bodies of the victims, whose ages ranged from 15 to 20, lay scattered around the house where the attack happened.
A witness to the attacks said he was just outside when the gunfire broke out. Hector, who only gave his first name because he feared retaliation, said the party was an innocuous gathering of friends who must have been targeted incorrectly.
"I think there was some confusion," he said. "We're seeking justice."
Ciudad Juarez, a city of 1.3 million people just across the border from El Paso, Texas, is home to several drug cartel bosses who are battling for turf as thousands of troops and federal police try to stop them.
More than 2,250 people were killed there last year alone.

lol, and this is not all, yesterday there was a shooting at my city, 10 dead, 15 wounded i believe but those are unofficial records... apparently 3 hummers went to 3 different bars/nightclubs last night and just started shooting at the people there... pretty disgusting... BUT, the night clubs they attacked are property of one of the big drug dealers group... so pretty sure it is yet another fight for the zone than the intention of killing innocent people just for the sake of it
fuck mexico, dont even bother coming here

i don't think this is funny at all.
mexicans are great people and the level of corruption these cartels have installed is incredibly disturbing. it's to the point where a large amount of americans all over the USA are in some way effected directly or indirectly.
i really wish we could find a solution to this, it's just terrible and in my opinion often underreported
the sad thing is the only solution thats reasonable that i can come up with is to legalize drug distribution and incorporate it at the state level.

It seems to me that the corruption there has reached the highest levels in the government.Dont really know how can you react to that ...
Nolan yeah but they can only legalize like weed and amphetamine based drugs.Noone will let them legalize coke/heroin even if they want to and its still such an extreme option
Its sad coz Mexico is one of the nations with insane potential from the developing countries but the country is being eaten from the inside out

I clicked on "underreported" like 5 times before I saw it wasn't a link. I could have sworn it was going to link to the New York Times' excellent series on the Mexican cartels and their impact on America: http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/in...es/mexico/drug_trafficking/index.html (scroll for articles in the series)

The "funny" thing about the war on drugs is that even when the police "wins" (as in, busts a shipment of drugs), they lose. Since drugs are not the easiest thing to traffick, the price obviously goes up a lot if a big shipment of it is lost. And pushing the prices up on drugs isn't exactly going to make the violence around it go down.
outside 2-3 drug-owned states, mexico is pretty cool... you can just lie in a hammock, straighten ur arm and pick up a banana... nobody will ever bother u, we have enough hammocks and bananas
