Lately Ive been wondering more and more about what the mixed games play like. Im not an amazing mixed game player by any standards but I kno the basics of all of them. Ive been playing NLHE for so long now and its getting a bit boring. Same old stuff, Overpair vs Set blah blah blah. I feel like trying something new.
My main question is how profitable you guys think the mixed games (Horse/7game/8game) are at the lower stakes say from .5/1 - 3/6? Are there actually a lot of regulars at these levels? Do you think that if one were to study these games for a few months they could have a small winrate? I would think a fish in the mixed games also would be 10x worse than a NLHE fish because there is no way they can be strong in all the games. On the other end, because they might not be good at all the games they probably would just not play them.
Also what do you think will happen in the future of the mixed games? Do you guys think that with all the big pros sort of migrating over to Mixed games that the rest one day will follow?

mixed games are becoming more popular.
but most of the older pros were already proficient in all mixed games and just played NLHE because of the availability of games @ poker boom. Now there are alot of NLHE professionals who made a lot of money on the net and are sick gamblers, so its +ev to promote mixed games to get people gambling out of their comfort zone where once again the old dogs have a huge edge.
Stars has .20/.40 8-game as the lowest stakes (PLO and NLH are .05/.10) There are probably a few regs since theres only about 4 tables going at a time. Most of them were rubbish at NLH
Fish in 8 game are generally good at some games, bad at others. Most of them seemed really bad at NLHE when i played, and i was really bad at Stud games. |

I don't have any strong opinions on the future of mixed games or anything like that, but I always feel like I have a decent edge overall in them as even the regs tend to be awful at all games (and everyone seems particularly bad at NLHE). I've never played it above 3/6.
I always got the impression it only took some minor knowledge of each game to be playing on par with the rest of the table at them, though surely playing only low stakes played a part in that. |

limit games will never be even close to no limit / pot limit games in terms of traffic |

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but if you go back and read anything about poker published in the early 80s they say that exact same thing. NL games dried up for a solid 10-15 years between then and when internet poker and televised shows got big.
Its a pretty unpredictable market when you're trying to look at long-term possibilities. |

The players are pretty terrible at a lot of the games but there are some huge drawbacks. One is just that PLO pretty much overshadows everything. It can be frustrating when u slowly bleed some noob at all the limit games then he earns it all back in a PLO flip. I strongly discourage playing 7 or 8 game unless u have a lot of PLO experience already. Another major drawback is that u can't really multi-table effectively. Getting mixed up as to which game is being played at which table is going to cost u eventually regardless of how assertive you are, and even if you feel really comfortable multitabling mixed, other people dont, so u wont see a lot of tables running.
I think a good player could have a decent winrate at these games (maybe even 3 BB/100), but adding just one more table is going to significantly slash that winrate usually to make it not worth it. |
