So we're playing some dealers choice last night and someone wants to play limit 5 card draw. Limit? I've played NL 5 card, but limit? I immediately said "whats the fuckin point in that? Absolutely every single betting round will be called". I always thought the beauty in traditional poker games was in the betting strategies. Do you *really* want to call $40 with your busted flush and pair of aces? But I cant bluff you off shit if I try to get all fancy and draw 0 cards or whatever.

Is limit even a variation of 5 card draw or stud? They looked at me like I was stupid for even suggesting NL, as if such a game does not exist outside of holdem. Assplain plz.

Yes and nobody folds in that stupid game, so it's perfectly valid :D!!

well there will be less bluffing and more calling because the bets are smaller, but bluffing is still a part of the game... if you bet $20 and take down $180 with the worst hand that's a massive victory for you, which is why everyone is constantly defending against that severe threat even though they know you won't bluff much

anyway your problem with the game is purely emotional.. if some variation of poker has a bad feel to you then just don't play it, I don't think you need a reason to

actually, I'm pretty sure that limit games have some beautiful and interesting twists to them that you won't discover in NL Hold'em, just like the reverse is true. For example, I think limit players often try to "bluff" while they have it, representing sicker nuts than they really have, because they want their opponent to incorrectly fold the worst hand when they should be chasing. I think that's pretty interesting, but maybe that's not ur thing

I wonder though; if you wouldve played a bazillion hands of limit stud first and then your friends tried to get you to play a hand of the new strange game called NL holdem, you would have also said "but whats the point in this silly game? You don't even need to keep track of dead cards!"

btw, isn't it kind of silly that there has to be a consensus somehow on which variations of poker "exist" and which don't? I mean, you can just play NL stud in a homegame if you want, no one will stop you

People learn to fold when you show them the nuts every hand.
FL is def. more popular than NL or PL. Especially in the higher limits.

Oh I love limit holdem. I learned to play 5 card draw with a NL structure, and thought that's how it's usually played. To me the game structure makes more sense that way, since it seems to be heavily rooted in reads and player tendencies, as you are playing completely in the dark, unlike holdem where you have shared information to go on. They were telling me 5card is usually played as a limit game and I just thought "well that sucks". Apparently limit draw is a perfectly standard variation which works, which is all I needed to know.

I think it was pretty much only ever played as a limit game.. doesn't really appeal to me either

it has a ton of shared info though, everyone gets to know how many cards everyone else draws

Has anybody read any articles that talk about NL 5 card draw? I have been looking around and have found a few resources but not many.
