villain just got moved to the table a little while ago and hasn't played a hand in one orbit so he's basically an unknown. against an unknown in a blind battle, what should be my range for calling his shove?
I feel like I play too much like a pussy in tourneys and so I finish in the money or near the bubble a lot but it seems like I never accumulate a monster stack to get to the FT and take it down. Even though I'm probably flipping at best here, should I be taking gambles like this to build a large stack?

insta call
imo i think ur flipping at worst |

yea call
you will of course sometimes lose when you do this and it makes you rethink your decision, but you shouldnt.
Just think about how often your sb raise gets pushed, and how seldom you run into 77 vs overpair situation in SB vs BB.. feel free to correct my numbers, but I think BB only has 88+ something like 1 out of 30 times. you get repushed in this situation FAR more frequently than that. )
he can be doing this with any ace, any pocket, QT+ K9+ if not even more, but I think thats a reasonable range for a complete random. you beat his range and you've already put in a not insignificant amount. |

I downloaded pokerstove for the first time to see what my equity here would be against certain ranges and I was suprised to see how well 77 does. If I assign villains range to be 22+,A6s+,ATo+, then it is almost exactly 50-50.
So now that we determined that this is an easy call, I want to discuss a little more what people think the villains range to be and what the cutoff would be to call.
Is drone's range of QT+, K9+ reasonable for a BB shove over a SB open with these stack sizes and blinds in a 50$ buyin tourney? And if so, what is the weakest hand that you will call with? Since it is 6355 to win 8405, you would need to win 43 % of the time to make this call breakeven. 22 against drones range has 44% equity so does that mean that a call from the SB here with 22 is the right play?
Are there any other factors to consider in this situation? I would be left with 3000 chips and a M of 5 if I lose the hand. What is the weakest hand that you would call with if the villain has us covered? How about if we would still have an M of 10 if we lost the hand?
Finally, what are the breakpoints of M that give us fold equity and resteal ability in a typical 50$ buyin tourney? |

If you have 22 in the sb, your options are to raise/call or just shove. Raise folding and open folding are dumb.
W/ 77 obv raise call is better. |

The reason for open shoving is if you think hes going to resteal a ton vs a normal raise and you don't want to race it off.
It is +ev to open shove here faceup so if you'd ever consider folding 22 here to avoid getting into a dumb spot, you should shove. If you think raising normally and playing it differently is more +ev than just shoving vs bb then do that, but you can't open fold. Lots of Mtt players recently have started added ~20bb open shoves from CO-SB to prevent people restealing when they want to avoid what is likely a flip but its still better to shove than fold |

what about call-shoving or is that too exploitable by the other guy pushing instead of raising?

Ya call shoving is cool too, its what i usually do with hands like QTs, T9s, 44 etc which lots of good mtt regs just shove pre |
